Wrexham agree record transfer but it may not be enough for Premier League star
Wrexham have struck a blockbuster deal worth £5million with Nottingham Forest for Lewis O'Brien - but they are struggling to meet the midfielder's wage demands.
The Championship newcomers are ready to splash the cash on quality additions to their squad after clinching three consecutive promotions. And after wrapping up deals for Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward, they are now keen on beefing up their midfield with a Championship proven performer in O'Brien.
Forest are willing to sell the 26-year-old after sending him out on loan to Swansea last season.
And although Wrexham have agreed terms with Forest on a package worth £5m in total for O'Brien's services, they are some way off the figures that the player is seeking when it comes to personal terms.
For that reason, as first reported by The Sun, the deal - which would smash Wrexham's transfer record - remains in doubt.
There has been no shortage of interest in O'Brien, who would be a major coup for Wrexham if they can reach an agreement on figures for the midfield maestro.
Hull City have also been linked with the former Huddersfield Town man. But with the Tigers now under an embargo which means they cannot pay a transfer fee for a player until 2027, they are no longer in the running to land O'Brien.
While it remains to be seen if O'Brien will be lining up for the team bankrolled by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds next season, Wrexham are expected to strengthen in other areas before the new Championship season kicks off.
They have already been linked with a host of quality players including Tom Cairney, the veteran Fulham midfielder whose contract expired at the end of June.
Former England duo Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell have also been linked with moves to Wrexham as the club eye up targets with extensive experience.
Phil Parkinson hinted previously that the club were keen to add more athleticism and power to the squad following their latest promotion, telling ESPN: "We're going into one of the most competitive leagues in world football. Not just European football, in world football. It's a relentless league.
"We're the only team in the league that's never played in the top flight in its history, so we're against some great clubs. As you go up the divisions in England, the technical ability improves, but the athleticism and the power are things where you can significantly see the difference."

Chelsea learn price after 'fresh talks' to sign Arsenal & Liverpool target
Chelsea have discovered what it would take to sign Jorrel Hato after opening fresh talks to sign the young Ajax defender. The Blues have set out their stall in the summer transfer market, bringing in Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr for a combined fee of around £190million. But Stamford Bridge bosses are determined to further strengthen Enzo Maresca's squad and attentions have turned to bringing in defensive reinforcements, as well as a high-class replacement for the error-prone Robert Sanchez. Widespread reports earlier this summer suggested Chelsea had made initial enquiries to gauge Hato's potential availability on the back of the left-back's outstanding season with Ajax. Hato – a product of Ajax's academy – made 50 appearances in all competitions for his boyhood club last term and the 19-year-old's stellar performances across the campaign saw him win the Eredivisie Talent of the Season award. Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal have also been credited with a strong interest in the highly rated teenager, who has already been capped six times the Dutch national team. According to talkSPORT, Chelsea have held fresh discussions since their initial round of talks and Hato's versatility is said to be hugely appealing to the Club World Cup winners – with the full-back also comfortable playing at centre-half. The report claims Ajax have been quoting potential suitors a price of £60million for Hato, but the Eredivisie outfit could be prepared to do business should they receive an offer of just £40m. Hato's current contract with Ajax runs through to June 2028. In an interview with Ajax's official website last month, Hato opened up on the goals and ambitions he wanted to achieve in his career. However, the youngster was keen to stress that he still had plenty to learn, while declaring that Ajax still felt like 'home'. 'The smartest thing is to look ahead to pre-season, that's what I do,' he said. 'Of course you want to achieve things in the end: the Champions League, a World Cup and a European Championship, I still have plenty of time. I don't think I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years. 'In the Dutch league, you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately, I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes top. 'How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here.'

Watford squad shaping up nicely
This time last year, pessimism surrounded Watford. Yaser Asprilla and Ismail Kone had been sold for over £20m to balance the books and Hornets fans weren't ecstatic about the incomings. The 2023-24 season had ended poorly with the club finishing 15th and expectations were low. Relegation fears were in the air among fans and pundits alike. Twelve months on and there's a different feeling around Vicarage Road. The Hornets did better than expected under Tom Cleverley, who nevertheless paid the price for a poor second half of last season. As it stands the two stars of the team have remained - Giorgi Chakvetadze and Kwadwo Baah - as well as some of the other solid performers from last season. This summer, the signings have been more impressive and others are on their way. Whisper it very quietly, but the Watford squad is shaping up rather quite nicely. The striker situation will be key this season. Watford have tried Mileta Raovic, Daniel Jebbison and Vakoun Bayo in the past 12 months and all have fallen short in terms of their technical ability. Indeed the best of the lot has been the raw teenager Mamadou Doumbia, who could develop into a fine number nine with age, experience and good coaching. Watford can't rely on him just yet which is why Vivaldo Semedo has been brought in and another is on his way the Hornets can get the right striker, he is sure to do well, feeding off the supplies of Chakvetadze, Baah, Rocco Vata and some of the other young wingers brought in/about to join. Owner Gino Pozzo did say they were going to give it a go this season and so far he's been true to his word. After a few years of low expectation, there's a bit of a buzz around Watford again and a sense that the team might just do well. The prospects for a promotion challenge look far healthier now than they have done for a while.

Messi, Mbappe & Neymar were my teammates - now I'm a Rangers player
Rangers' latest signing was part of the Paris Saint-Germain side with those global superstars in the team. The 21-year-old was bumped up from the Under-19s side to play in the first team, but he only managed to feature in one match. The winger today agreed a four-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months at Ibrox, moving for a fee in the region of £2.2m. Now, having joined from Sheffield Wednesday, he's lifted the lid on what it was like being up close and personal with three of football's most technically gifted players. "I started there when I was young, playing for the Under-19s," Gassama told Rangers TV. "My first professional game for Paris Saint-Germain was crazy. "They had lots of players like Messi, Mbappe and Neymar. It was crazy. "This was a good experience for me to train with them. "I learned lots from them, like when they go to the gym and to the pitch, they always give 100 percent. You have to show them that you'll do the same. "Training with them was like playing in a game." Gassama moved from Paris to Sheffield Wednesday two seasons ago. He scored seven goals in the Championship last term. Gassama added: "The last two years in Sheffield has given me good progression and experience in English football. "I had the chance to play more, and I took it."
