State leaders, officials push for clean air quality for Connecticut schools
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — It is 'National Healthy Schools Week,' and state legislators, community members, and advocates are coming together on Wednesday to ensure clean air for all students and teachers in Connecticut.
The goal is to promote healthy learning environments. Air quality issues have been seen in several school districts around our state, and the leaders of Wednesday's event are calling for change.
A dozen evaluated for 'nausea' symptoms at Thompson public school
In Hartford, state Rep. Jennifer Leeper (D-Fairfield) will join legislators and members of the Connecticut Working Group on School Indoor Air Quality.
They're calling for the CT General Assembly to pass bill 6922, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining clean air and ensuring local districts meet indoor air quality safety standards.
The bill discusses necessary heating, ventilation, and air conditioning upgrades, and the importance of routine HVAC inspections and maintenance.
Indoor air quality advocates say this bill is more important than ever in the face of looming federal funding cuts.
Several schools across the state have reported air quality issues over the past few years.
Earlier this year in Thompson, a dozen students and staff from the middle school were sent to three different hospitals after some felt sick and had trouble breathing.
It was later found that an exhaust fan and unit ventilation failed.
In 2023, authorities found mold at Deep River Middle School.
This will be discussed at 10 a.m. at the legislative office building in Hartford on Wednesday.

State leaders give Connecticut schools easier access to grants for HVAC improvements
BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH) — A pandemic-era program intended to help schools address concerns about indoor air quality will live on as a permanent feature of the state's wide-ranging school construction funding system. Efforts to improve indoor air quality in schools has been a longstanding priority for local leaders, with many noting the negative effects of aging ventilation systems servicing school buildings constructed in the mid or late 20th century. Can AI help solve Hartford's pothole problem? A lack of sufficient air conditioning means schools are often forced to close due to extreme heat. Worn-down ventilation systems can be ineffective when it comes to removing dust particles that carry disease and agitate the lungs of asthmatic students. The pandemic put those shortcomings centerstage, and state leaders rushed to act. Starting in 2022, the state government doled out $178 million in grants to help schools upgrade or replace their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, with 163 schools receiving funds. Though the height of the pandemic is now in the rearview window, leaders still hoped to address the longer-term issue of air quality and climate control that still poses challenges for schools across the state. The response to those calls for improvements came in the form of a policy change that state leaders framed as a more permanent, consistent fix. Rather than distributing funds through ad hoc grant programs, cash for school HVAC upgrades will now be included as part of the state's school construction funding system. The HVAC grants under the school construction program will be easy to apply for, Commissioner Michelle Gilman, the official who oversees the program, said. 'It's a monthly application,' Gilman explained. 'It's not a competitive grant program. So, again we have made this very easy for our school districts to demonstrate the need and apply for that.' Gilman and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz (D) visited a school in Bristol which received money as part of the earlier grants to tout the new funding arrangement. 'We've eliminated having to cancel school because of extremely hot days,' Peter Fusco, Bristol Public Schools Director of Facilities, said of the system that has been installed in South Side School. Bysiewicz applauded the work done in Bristol and the coming funds for other districts. She noted the dual utility of the new systems — taming the effects of extreme temperatures while not losing focus of one of the original forces that drove the state spending. Meriden woman with rare brain condition inspires others on social media
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Connecticut woman had no idea she had a rare brain condition since birth until she passed out and was flown to Hartford Hospital, where she would end up needing four surgeries. 'My mom had said that I came to her with a regular headache and she said within a matter of five minutes, I had passed out,' 26-year-old Michaela Williams of Meriden said. That jumpstarted her emergency medical ordeal. Dr. Eric Sussman, a Hartford Hospital neurosurgeon helped save her life. It turns out that Williams was among just 1% of the population to have a condition called arteriovenous malformation, or AVM. It is abnormal tangles of high pressure blood vessels in her brain. They flowed into delicate arteries which started to bleed under pressure. 'Removing the AVM is very, I think, one of the more complex surgeries that we do. But in her case it was just the whole clinical picture of her being sick and really teetering on the edge the whole time she was here,' Sussman, who specializes in vascular surgery, said. Sussman says Williams underwent four surgeries, including a craniotomy, where part of her skull was removed to allow her brain to heal for a period of time. Williams' strength and faith pulled her through. Sussman calls it miraculous. 'I'm still creative. I like to write. I like to paint. I like to go outside,' Williams said, who continues to make uplifting TikTok videos like she did before her diagnosis. She hopes to help others who may be going through a tough time. 'I want them to feel encouraged, understood, heard. I want them to feel like they're not the only one,' Williams would like to make a dating app for others living with brain injuries.'Everybody that follows me on TikTok, they are family. They encourage me, they push me, uplift me and we encourage and push and uplift each other,' Williams said. There are two very positive takeaways from Williams' journey. First, she was very lucky that her mother was home when she first passed out to get her emergency care. Second, Dr. Sussman said that her brain will continue to heal, possibly for a few more years.
