THE original Renault 4 was a tin snail.
Small and slow with a big boot.

The only thing it was designed to beat was a Citroen 2CV.
Talk about setting the bar low.
But boy did it hit the spot.
Renault sold eight million over 30 years and even today it still ranks as the eighth best-selling car of all time.
Now the R4 has been reimagined for the electric age as a funky family crossover with a Google brain, squishy seats and a canvas roll-back roof.
Lifestyle, innit.
So it's no longer the cheap, simple, no-frills runabout it once was.
It's actually bigger and more expensive than a Renault 5.
Yep, 4 is bigger than 5 at Planet Renault. Funny. I don't recall Manfred Mann singing, '4-5-3-2-1'.
Yet it is still a capital-B bargain at £27k, undercutting battery-powered rivals from Mini, Fiat, Ford and Vauxhall by several bags.
The Sun's Motors Editor Rob Gill takes the new electric Renault 5 for a spin
Put an R4 through an X-ray machine and you'll see it has the same bones as an R5. Good start.
The R5 is the 2025 European Car of the Year. It drives like an R5. Feels like an R5. Goes as far as an R5. The difference being that R4 is a bit longer and taller and has a bigger boot. So it's more practical. Better for dogs.
It also has a low, flat loading sill like the Sixties original. As much as 10cm lower than the competition. Which tells me there's an R4 van coming soon.
We're not getting that flip-down front passenger seat on UK cars right now. Which needs sorting.
It would be mint for carrying long things like ladders or surfboards or chauffeuring Peter Crouch in the back. He'd have somewhere to stick his legs.
This next bit is a little nerdy but braking regeneration is another area where the R4 trumps the R5.
It has four modes controlled by flappy paddles on the steering wheel. So you can mimic changing down gears for a bend, and force-feed the battery with electrons.
The R5 and its racy twin, the Alpine A290, don't have flappy paddles. Explain that one. The practical less sporty car gets the fun stuff.
Also, there's a four-wheel-drive R4 in the pipeline for people who might actually do 'lifestyle-y' things with it at the weekend.
As for range, the 52kWh battery will do up to 247 miles and recharges to 80 per cent in a 30-minute tea-and-pee break.
R4 isn't taking the smaller 40kWh battery available in the R5.
As for looks, yes, it's another crossover. But it does have some cool references to the original R4, if you know your French onions.

Another successful reboot on the way

Like the one-piece front grille. This time with an illuminated ring around it. Not chrome.
Like the upright three-part rear lights. This time as LEDs.
Like the roof rack. Not just for show. It can actually carry 80kg of stuff.
Renault has successfully rebooted R4 and R5 as cool, cost-friendly EVs.
What's next?
A titchy £17k Twingo.

I moved flats & my passive aggressive neighbour's response to my parking is out of hand – people say she's ‘entitled'

People had a few different theories regarding the notes TAKE NOTE I moved flats & my passive aggressive neighbour's response to my parking is out of hand – people say she's 'entitled' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WAR between two neighbours kicked off after one left a series of passive aggressive notes on the other's car. The driver, who recently moved into the new flat, was left scratching her head when she discovered the Post-it notes on her vehicle. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 The notes left the driver scratching her head Credit: Reddit 2 It turned out it was the pesky neighbour who was in the wrong Credit: Getty The first of the series of notes boldly said: "RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBOUR. Stop parking in their paid, assigned spot. It's just rude!" But the driver decided not to move her car, since she was sure she was in fact in the correct space. That's when the mystery neighbour began leaving more notes. "I've tried to be kind but you ignored my note," the second said. "You could've been towed a week ago. PLEASE let me park in the spot I've had for years. THX [sic]." And the neighbour continued their tirade with the next note, which read: "NOT YOUR SPOT PLEASE STOP taking it! THANK YOU." "I PAY FOR THIS SPOT and would like to use it. Please and thank you," they added in a fourth. After sharing the notes on Reddit, the driver decided to check with the real estate office to see if they were in the wrong or not. But they confirmed she was parking in the right space, which was allocated to her flat. They explained: "I took their notes off and placed a note on my own windshield saying something to the effect of 'I checked with the office and this is my spot. You should check with them too.'" Major New Driving Laws for Summer & Fall 2025: What You Need to Know After leaving the note they noticed it had vanished from their neighbour's car, and no new notes appeared. At this point, fellow Reddit users were left baffled as to why the neighbour thought the spot was theirs. The consensus was that the neighbour must've been parking in the wrong space for years and either didn't realise or forgot about it. "If I was wrong and did this, I would be so embarrassed and offer up an apology and probably a gift," one person commented on the viral post. "The irony of being mad someone took the spot that you've actually been the one stealing," a second added. But not everyone was convinced it was such an honest mistake - even if the notes were slightly passive aggressive. Some thought the neighbour knew the space wasn't theirs, but since they'd been in it so long they didn't want to leave. "They just feel entitled to this spot even though it isn't assigned to them," one said. "Seems like someone just parked there for free since the complex hadn't sold it. "Now they're sad to see it go and were hoping that you were parking there for free, too," another mused.

Iconic BMW model is being discontinued after 35 YEARS with ‘retro-inspired' send-off

It's getting one-last hurrah - with a selection of very cool colours and other added extras DEAD END Iconic BMW model is being discontinued after 35 YEARS with 'retro-inspired' send-off Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE BMW 8-Series is set to be discontinued - a model that traces its roots back to the iconic 1990s E31 generation. And to send it off, the German giants are giving the stylish motor a retro-inspired send-off, courtesy of a very cool special edition called the Edition M Heritage. The car, based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, will be limited to just 500 units, with buyers able to choose from some excellent colour finishes including Bright Red, Mauritius Blue, Cosmos Black, Oxford Green and Daytona Violet. It also comes with a carbon fibre roof adorned with M tri-colour stripes, special 20-inch alloy wheels and the M Sport Professional package - all as standard. This also includes upgraded brakes, black calipers and additional black exterior trim. Inside, buyers can expect plenty of luxury with Alcantara and black Merino leather seats featuring diamond stitching. Alcantara also lines the headliner, dashboard and parts of the door panels. Matte carbon fibre accents and M tri-colour stitching are also used throughout. As you'd expect with the 8 Series, it packs plenty of oomph - retaining the same power as the standard M850i, with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 523 horsepower. That's good for a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The 8 Series' discontinuation was announced at the beginning of the year and various sources close to BMW have told us it will cease globally sometime in the middle of 2026. BMW M135 is a power-packed hot-hatch that's precise, solid & slick… everything about it is 'sheer driving pleasure' Sadly, no direct successor has been planned. The Edition M Heritage has been quoted at a price of $131,575, which is roughly £97,000 ,and a fair chunk pricier than the standard M850i Gran Coupe. Production of this exclusive model will begin in late 2025, with deliveries expected in early 2026. The model will be distributed to "a few select markets around the world". This comes as, back in May, BMW said jobs at its Swindon Plant "are currently being assessed," casting doubt over the futures of workers. The carmaker announced that it was axing 180 jobs from its Oxford factory amid uncertainty surrounding recently hiked US tariffs. In March, US President Donald Trump declared that a 25% levy would be put in place on all vehicles imported to America from the UK - which has put a significant strain on the British automobile industry.
