PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Diogo Goncalves scored late in the second half and Rafael Cabral made it stand up in Real Salt Lake's 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night.
Gonçalves scored for the third time this season when he used 20-year-old rookie Ariath Piol's second assist in the 83rd minute to send a right-footed shot from the right side of the box past Maxime Crépeau. Piol subbed in for William Agada in the 73rd minute.
Cabral had one save and it came in the scoreless first half for Real Salt Lake (8-10-4). It was the sixth clean sheet in 22 starts for the 35-year-old in his first season in the league.
Crépeau stopped three shots for the Timbers (9-7-6) — all in the second half.
Real Salt Lake has gone 4-0-1 since the start of June and improved to 3-6-3 on the road.
Portland falls to 6-2-4 at home on a night the Timbers celebrated the 10th anniversary of their MLS Cup championship.
The Timbers were coming off a 2-1 road loss to St. Louis City and are 2-3-1 in their last six matches.
The two clubs played to a scoreless draw in Utah in May.
Real Salt Lake will host FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The Timbers will host Minnesota United on Saturday.

Ohtani's big homer and Smith's 2 blasts help Dodgers end home woes with 5-2 win over Twins

LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the first after giving up a leadoff homer to fellow All-Star Byron Buxton, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Monday night. The NL West leaders snapped a six-game skid at home, their longest such streak at Dodger Stadium since September 2017. They were swept in three games by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. Buxton sent Ohtani's second pitch of the game halfway up the left field pavilion. After Mookie Betts walked, Ohtani answered with a 441-foot blast to center that put the Dodgers in front, 2-1. The two-way Japanese superstar has homered in three straight games. Smith went deep twice off David Festa (3-4). Smith led off the fourth with a two-strike homer to center and followed with a 435-foot shot to left that made it 4-1. Andy Pages added a solo shot off reliever Cole Sands. Dustin May (6-6) took over from Ohtani, who allowed one run, four hits and struck out three in three innings. May gave up five hits in 4 2/3 innings, struck out four and walked three. Kirby Yates earned his third save. Freddie Freeman was in the lineup a day after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Milwaukee. He was 1 for 4 with a strikeout. Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa went 0 for 5, getting booed heavily in every at-bat by Dodgers fans still angry about the 2017 World Series, when Correa played for Houston. He was robbed of a potential game-tying homer by James Outman at the center field wall in the ninth. Ohtani is the first pitcher to give up a homer and hit a homer in the first inning of the same game since Philadelphia's Randy Lerch in a 23-22 win over the Chicago Cubs on May 17, 1979. Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 3.95 ERA) starts Tuesday against Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-7, 2.59). ___

Promoted Leeds signs former Germany midfielder Anton Stach from Hoffenheim

LEEDS, England (AP) — Leeds, back in the Premier League this season, has signed former Germany defensive midfielder Anton Stach from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. Leeds said on Tuesday the 26-year-old had been given a four-year contract. Financial details were not disclosed but according to media reports the fee is 17.4 million pounds ($23.5 million). 'The biggest target is to stay in the league and personally just develop, adapt to the league, to the speed of course, and then get many good experiences hopefully,' Stach said. Stach, who also previously played for Mainz, has made 122 Bundesliga appearances since 2021. He has two Germany caps, the last of which came in 2022. Stach is the sixth new signing made by Leeds ahead of the club's return to the Premier League. ___

Newcastle United legend Nolberto Solano named as Pakistan coach

Associated Press ISLAMABAD (AP) — Newcastle United legend Nolberto Solano has been appointed as head coach of Pakistan's senior and under-23 teams. Solano will take over from Stephen Constantine and his first major assignment will be the AFC Under-23 qualifiers in September where Pakistan is grouped with Cambodia, Iraq and Oman. He will also be in charge for the remainder of Pakistan's 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign, including a double-header against Afghanistan in October. Solano's appointment is the first major signing by the newly-elected Pakistan Football Federation with Mohsen Gilani as its president. 'Under President Mohsen Gilani's leadership, PFF proudly welcomes Nolberto Solano as Head Coach of Pakistan U23 with a pathway to the senior team!,' the PFF wrote on X while welcoming the former Peru winger. 'A true legend with EPL, World Cup & Copa América pedigree it's a new era for Pakistan football.' Solano was the assistant coach of Peru when his country qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2018 in Russia after 36 years. He left the national team in 2022 when Peru failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar after it was beaten by Australia in an inter-continental playoff. Constantine led Pakistan to its first ever victory in a World Cup qualifier in Oct. 2023 and had been coaching the team on game-to-game basis after his one-year contract expired in November last year. ___ AP soccer: in this topic
