THROWBACK: Nelson Mandela and his retro Olympics drip

The Springboks have had many influential Rugby World Cup fans down the years, but Nelson Mandela was certainly the greatest, and arguably the most stylish.
The 1995 final will never be forgotten. Joel Stransky's drop-kick settled the contest in extra time, producing a 15-12 scoreline to be forever etched in the hearts and minds of fanatical Bok supporters. As skipper Francois Pienaar said while clutching the William Webb Ellis trophy:
'We didn't have 60,000 South Africans, we had 43 million South Africans.' Images of Pienaar alongside then-president Nelson Mandela still adorn walls across the land. This 1995 Bok kit was iconic, made to look even better by Madiba with the classic cricket-style cap. Undefeated.

What do Handrè Pollard and the legendary François Steyn have in common? Well, they've both slotted massive penalties to help their sides to Rugby World Cup knockout wins against England. Frans Steyn did it in the biggest game of all back in 2007 in France when he was just 20 years old, seemingly unperturbed by the unbearable pressure heaped on his shoulders. He converted from 48 metres in the 62nd minute in the final to give the Springboks a 15-6 lead. England never recovered. Pollard said the nerveless penalty in 2023's semi-final was the best strike of his career.
Flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit completed 28 tackles against the All Blacks in the 2023 final. To put that absurd number into some type of context, the previous record for tackles made by one player in a Rugby World Cup final was 18 by Richie McCaw all the way back in 2011. To eclipse that mark by 10 is a monumental effort. Collectively, the Springboks made 208 tackles in the final, the most ever in a knockout match at the RWC. What's your best Nelson Mandela memory in a sporting context?

Joe Schmidt sticks to winning formula as Wallabies eye historic double over Springboks

Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt made minimal changes to his starting team ahead of the second Rugby Championship clash against the Springboks. Image: EPA Despite the numerous changes the Springboks have made, the Wallabies believe they remain a dangerous side ahead of their second Rugby Championship match in Cape Town on Saturday. While his counterpart Rassie Erasmus made 10 changes to the Bok starting team for the deciding clash at DHL Stadium (5.10pm kick-off), Australian head coach Joe Schmidt made minimal adjustments to the team that beat their hosts last weekend. Following that 38–22 victory, Schmidt was forced to replace captain and No 8 Harry Wilson with Rob Valetini. Debutant winger Corey Toole comes in for Dylan Pietsch, who suffered a fractured jaw, while Tom Robertson takes the loosehead jersey in place of the concussed James Slipper. Valetini's physicality will also be crucial in what could be a wet and muddy affair in the Mother City. 'Corey is a great young kid. He's come in from the Sevens programme, which is something several of the South African speedsters have done,' Schmidt said. 'He's adapting well to the game, and this will be a steep learning curve for him. You want to grow their game and get them comfortable transitioning from Sevens to Fifteens. There's a lot less space to move in, and you must become proficient around the contact area. He has worked hard at that.' According to Schmidt, they expect a fierce aerial battle, and he highlighted that as another strength of Toole's game. He wants to see his side perform better when it comes to competing for high kicks.

McReight to captain Wallabies against Springboks

CAPE TOWN - Flank Fraser McReight will captain Australia as they seek a second successive win against South Africa in their Rugby Championship match at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. McReight takes over the leadership of the Wallabies after regular captain Harry Wilson was injured after scoring two tries during his team's upset 38-22 win over the Springboks in Johannesburg last Saturday. Rob Valetini will replace Wilson at eighthman in one of three injury-enforced changes. Uncapped Corey Toole will start on the left wing in place of Dylan Pietsch, who suffered a broken jaw during last week's victory, while Tom Robertson will scrum down at loosehead prop because veteran James Slipper has returned home under head injury protocols. Coach Joe Schmidt said the Wallabies expected a tough match against the world champion Springboks, who on Tuesday announced 10 changes to their starting team after the Johannesburg defeat. 'The squad as a whole has recovered pretty well from what was a very draining and physical Test match on the highveld last week,' said Schmidt. 'We struggled to contain a powerhouse Springbok start last weekend and we know that we have to improve leading into what is likely to be a bruising encounter,' said Schmidt, referring to a blistering start by the Springboks, who led 22-0 in Johannesburg before the Wallabies stormed back. The Wallabies will be seeking a third successive win after beating the British and Irish Lions 22-12 in Sydney on August 2 before travelling to South Africa. Team (15-1): Tom Wright; Max Jorgensen, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Len Ikitau, Corey Toole; James O'Connor, Nic White; Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight (captain), Tom Hooper; Will Skelton, Nick Frost; Taniela Tupou, Billy Pollard, Tom Robertson. Replacements: Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell, Zane Nonggorr, Jeremy Williams, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Tate McDermott, Tane Edmed, Andrew Kellaway.

All Blacks coach Robertson expecting 'fiery' clash with Springboks in Auckland

All Blacks coach Scott Robertson expects a fiery contest when the Springboks return to their strengths at Eden Park in September. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix All Blacks coach Scott Robertson says the Springboks will return to their famed strengths against Australia on Saturday after running themselves into the ground at Ellis Park in a 38–22 loss to the Wallabies. Robertson pointed out that the Boks' adventurous approach opened them up to errors, allowing Australia back into the game after South Africa had raced to an early 22–0 lead. Further, he is under no illusion about the style of play the Boks will adopt when they tackle the All Blacks in a much-anticipated Rugby Championship clash at Eden Park on 6 September. Next Stay Close ✕ Robertson told reporters that a 'fiery' encounter is guaranteed when the Boks attempt to end the New Zealanders' 31-year winning streak at the Auckland fortress. The Springboks have won just once at Eden Park — back in 1937 when Philip Nel's team secured a series win at the ground. Robertson, like his countryman Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies coach, said the scoreline was an exaggeration of the perceived Australian dominance. 'It was a game of a bounce of a ball and a pass and a couple of little moments,' Robertson said. 'South Africa played beautifully for a period of time, and then it just turned, didn't it? And it just shows, like I have said before, with discipline and accuracy, you can force errors, and things can change quickly.' Back in the late 1990s, Robertson and Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus opposed each other as openside flanks in a Tri-Nations game. They have had a mutual respect ever since. Robertson feels that the loss at Ellis Park will direct Erasmus back to the Springbok DNA that has served them so well. 'Does it change the way we're going to play the Boks? Look, we know how they're going to play. They're going to play to their strengths. They'll go back to them. That is my opinion, anyway. It's just their DNA. But it's about how you stop them, while also playing your own game.' The All Blacks beat Argentina last week and face them again on Saturday before the countdown to Eden Park begins. 'It'll be a hell of a fiery Test,' the All Blacks coach smiled. 'How good is Test footy? Everyone's talking about it and there's some great footy being played.'
