Today in Politics: PM Modi in Cyprus before G7 summit in Canada
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia from June 15-19.
He will visit Cyprus on June 15-16, on his way to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16-17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be PM Modi's first foreign tour after Operation Sindoor.
The G7 Leaders' Summit – held annually for the leaders of the G7 member states — the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and the European Union — will be held in Alberta's Kananaskis from June 15 to 17. India has been invited to every G7 Summit since 2019.
Mark Carney, an economist and political newcomer, took charge as Canada's prime minister in March following the exit of Justin Trudeau from the top office.
Modi received a call from Carney earlier this month, during which the latter invited the prime minister to attend the G7 meeting. The call was also an occasion for the two prime ministers to reflect and talk about India-Canada relations and how they can be taken forward, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters on June 12.
Describing India and Canada as 'vibrant democracies', the external affairs ministry had also said that New Delhi believes the forthcoming meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views and 'explore pathways' to reset bilateral ties.
The development comes after more than a year of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, triggered by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's allegations about the 'potential' link between Indian agents and the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Canada in 2023. India rejected the charges as 'absurd' and 'motivated', and consequently, both nations expelled high commissioners and other senior diplomats in a tit-for-tat move.
India has also repeatedly expressed concern about Khalistani extremism and anti-India activities in Canada and has asked authorities to take action against such activities.
Asked about Carney's statement about PM Modi agreeing to engage in law enforcement dialogue, Jaiswal said there were 'existing mechanisms between Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies that have discussed issues of mutual security concern over a period of time. This engagement is likely to continue.'
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will distribute appointment letters to 60,244 newly recruited constables of the Uttar Pradesh Police at a ceremony in Lucknow, an official statement said.
The event marks the largest-ever direct recruitment drive for civil police constables in the history of the state police, the statement said.
Under the Civil Police Direct Recruitment-2023, 48,196 male and 12,048 female candidates have been selected. The process was conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board.
The statement said the recruitment drive received 48.17 lakh applications, including 15.49 lakh from women. Despite the scale, the examination and selection process was completed smoothly through the use of advanced technology and strict supervision.

Three-nation tour opportunity to thank countries for support to India: PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday embarked on a three-nation tour—his first overseas trip since the Pahalgam terror attacks and India's subsequent missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan. The visit includes stops in Canada, where he will attend the G7 Summit, and in Cyprus and Croatia. The tour is scheduled to conclude on June 19. Over the next few days, will be visiting Cyprus, Canada and Croatia to attend various programmes, including bilateral meetings and multilateral engagements. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 15, 2025 Canada visit may help 'reset' strained ties In Canada, Modi is expected to engage in dialogue aimed at 'resetting' bilateral ties, which have been strained over the activities of Khalistani extremists in recent years. Intelligence sharing and other areas of cooperation are likely to be discussed. He is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump and other leaders of G7 member nations. The last Modi-Trump meeting took place in Washington in February, shortly after Trump assumed office. Focus on West Asia, AI, energy and global disruptions As per the Prime Minister's departure statement, the G7 Summit is likely to focus on the evolving situation in West Asia, particularly the Iran-Israel conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war. According to the Indian government, discussions will also cover 'crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues'. The economic fallout of US tariffs may also surface during deliberations. 'This three-nation tour is also an opportunity to thank partner countries for their steadfast support to India in our fight against cross-border terrorism, and to galvanise global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,' Modi said. Global South, 50th anniversary of G7 in focus Modi is attending the G7 at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He said the summit would provide a platform for discussions on global issues and priorities of the Global South. It will be Modi's first visit to Canada in 10 years. He is scheduled to land in Calgary on Monday after his stop in Cyprus. Strengthening India-Cyprus ties, message to Turkiye Calling Cyprus a 'close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean and EU', Modi is scheduled to meet the President of Cyprus, address business leaders, and discuss the India-Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC). The visit also carries strategic undertones. Cyprus's decades-old dispute with Turkiye, and Ankara's support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, add diplomatic weight to Modi's visit to Nicosia. India–Cyprus bilateral trade stood at $136.96 million in FY24. Cyprus ranks among India's top 10 investors, with cumulative investments of $14.65 billion between April 2000 and March 2025, according to DPIIT estimates. First-ever PM visit to Croatia In the final leg of the tour, Modi will travel to Croatia—marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country. India and Croatia enjoy cooperation across trade, investment, defence, and agriculture. Bilateral trade is approximately $300 million. Indian investments in Croatia total $48 million, while Croatian investments in India are around $6 million. India's 12th G7 participation, Modi's 6th This year marks the 50th anniversary of the G7. Although India is not a member, this is its 12th participation and Modi's 6th in the summit's Outreach Sessions. Key themes expected to be discussed include countering foreign interference, tackling transnational crime, ensuring energy security, accelerating the digital transition, securing critical mineral supply chains, and leveraging AI and quantum computing to boost growth.

Israel-Iran War forces PM Modi's 'Air India One' to take a detour to the G-7 Summit
The escalating war between Iran and Israel has unleashed chaos in West Asia's skies, plunging air travel into a fresh crisis. Airspaces are closed down, and major airlines are scrambling, cancelling flights left and right. Even VIPs aren't spared. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Air India-1 is set to jet off from Delhi on Sunday to attend the G-7 Summit and other bilateral engagements in Cyprus and Croatia. However, his flight for this three-nation tour would be longer than usual due to the mounting tension in the West Asian skies. Before reaching Kananaskis in Canada, Air India One would land in Larnaca in Cyprus. The normal flight path to Cyprus would have been through the airspaces of Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, but with tensions rising, this route is closed. Even alternate routes — the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Jordan — are tangled in regional strife. Pakistan's airspace has been off-limits to Indian planes since Operation Sindoor (May 7-10). According to sources, even VIP flights, including Modi's Air India One, would have to face strict restrictions. The Delhi-to-Larnaca trip, which is normally 8-9 hours, will stretch due to detours for safety. After taking off from Delhi on Sunday at around 7:30 am, Air India One would land in Larnaca by 3:00 pm. He'll spend 24 hours in Cyprus and leave for Canada on June 16, avoiding the war zone of June 13, 2025, airstrikes on Iran have spiked tensions afresh. Israel, Iran, and many neighbouring countries have closed their airspaces to civilian flights. Flights from India to Europe and North America are now taking extended routes. This has increased travel time and upped fuel and travel expenses. Estimates suggest flight times to North America and the West are up by 1-2 hours. Operating costs for airlines have gone up by 12%. Indian carriers like Air India and IndiGo have already axed over a dozen flights. The skies are tense, and travellers are paying the InMust Watch

Honeymoon Murder Case: Raja Raghuvanshi's Family Seeks Narco Test On Sonam, Others
Indore: The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi took a new turn after his family members raised serious questions about the statements given by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged accomplices. As per Meghalaya Police, Sonam and four others murdered Raja. In response, a candle march was carried out in Indore, demanding justice and a deeper investigation into the case. While speaking to ANI, Raja's brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, made a strong appeal for a narco test on the accused, stating that their behaviour during the probe raised doubts. "The way Sonam and Raj are misleading the police is shocking. Once a narco test is done, it will be revealed how much Sonam is lying about it. How all the accused are lying indicates that they may know more about the murder... I cannot talk to Sonam's parents yet. Why haven't they made any statements through the media? For instance, Raj claims Sonam has been typing Rakhi to Govind and him for three years. Doesn't her mother know this? Police need to question her parents. Why have you all hidden this from the media and police?" he told ANI. Meanwhile, Raja's brother, Sachin Raghuvanshi, led the candle march in Indore, expressing the family's grief and their firm stand for justice. "To get justice for Raja, I will go anywhere in the world... This candle march is organised so that Raja's soul may attain peace..." he said. Meghalaya BJP President Rikman G Momin also reacted to the case. He condemned those who tried to defame the state of Meghalaya in the wake of the murder. "The blame has already been placed on our state, so those who are blaming have to come and apologise to our state. Meghalaya is a safe and tourist-friendly state... Everyone can come to Meghalaya, and we receive everyone as our brothers and sisters. There is no difference; everyone is Indian, and we are Indians. We will work together... I salute the Meghalaya police for cracking this case..." he said. According to Meghalaya Police, Sonam Raghuvanshi and four others were involved in the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, who had gone missing earlier. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has decided to revisit the existing Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to strengthen the existing legislation to ensure the safety of state residents and tourists. Meghalaya Minister Alexander Laloo Hek told ANI that during the cabinet meeting yesterday a very important decision was taken to revisit the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and the tourists coming to Meghalaya have to be registered. He said it has been decided to install CCTV cameras in tourist places in the state."We have also decided to install CCTV in all tourist places in Meghalaya as well as in hotels, homestays, lodges", he added. When asked about Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam Raghuvanshi hiring a Scooty from an illegal agency in Shillong, the minister said, "For now, we don't know whether it's illegal or not, but it is being said that they have hired the Scooty from Shillong only." Earlier on Friday, Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh praised the state police for their "efficient" investigation into the sensational Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, which led to the arrest of five accused, including the victim's wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi.
