Marcos plans more job in fairs outside Metro Manila to expand job access
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced plans to hold more job fairs outside Metro Manila to make employment opportunities more accessible to job seekers in provincial areas.
Speaking at the Jobstreet Career Con at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on January 29, Marcos emphasized that these efforts aim to reduce the need for long-distance travel for those seeking work.
The two-day event, organized in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and other agencies, focused on creating 'quality jobs' with potential for career advancement or even entrepreneurship.
'Once we see that many people have been placed in good jobs, we will continue this program,' Marcos said. He also stressed that the government's support for workers should extend beyond just finding employment, highlighting the importance of offering jobs that provide growth potential.
'Whatever job they hold, it should be a quality job with potential for promotion, or for starting their own business,' he added.
The President further noted the evolving dynamics of the labor market and the need for workers to reskill and upskill to meet changing industry demands.
The job fair offered over 5,000 local and international job opportunities, with a focus on helping those affected by the closure of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

Marcos orders thorough review of P200 wage hike proposal's economic impact
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed a comprehensive review of the economic ramifications of the proposed ₱200 daily wage increase, according to Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro. The wage hike, recently passed by the House of Representatives under House Bill 11376, aims to raise the minimum wage for private-sector workers nationwide. Speaking at a palace briefing, Castro said the President wants to ensure that any wage adjustment will be truly beneficial to Filipino workers and will take into consideration the recommendations of wage boards, which are also creations of Congress. 'This is the President's message: 'We will look at the economic implications and consider the opinions of wage boards,'' Castro said, emphasizing that the administration is committed to what's best for Filipino laborers. Castro also noted that all stakeholder perspectives will be weighed before any decision is made, as the bill is still pending in the Senate. 'It is still under Senate deliberation. The President is committed to reviewing the economic consequences to ensure any move will be fair and beneficial,' she added. Business groups, including the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), have criticized the measure, warning that the increase could have adverse effects on both businesses and workers. ECOP chairman Edgardo Lacson argued that the proposal may be economically harmful and is unlikely to gain final approval, citing the administration's consistent opposition to legislated wage hikes.

Francis Edralin Lim as the new Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Commission, replacing Emilio Aquino, whose term ends on June 5. Lim previously served as President and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange and is known for his expertise in corporate and securities law. Addressing speculation about a sweeping overhaul, Bersamin rejected the notion that the review was a purge. 'If you are asking for blood, there will still be blood… but at least for the major departments, wala hong masyadong movement,' he said. Bersamin emphasized that all officials, including those retained, are still subject to high standards and ongoing performance reviews. 'Even if you have been retained now, you will still be expected to deliver on your marching orders,' he said. The Executive Secretary added that evaluations are ongoing for undersecretaries and heads of government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs), with announcements expected in the coming months. 'The performance evaluation is a continuing process. You can be sure that at any time, anyone who is not performing according to standards of the President will be replaced or relocated.'

Pag-IBIG Fund continues to grow members' savings as investment income climbs 50%
Pag-IBIG Fund recorded a 50% increase in investment income in the first four months of 2025, reflecting its prudent financial stewardship and growing capacity to support members' savings and housing needs. The development affirms the agency's key role in advancing the Marcos administration's agenda of strengthening government financial institutions and improving the lives of Filipino workers through responsive social benefits. From January to April 2025, the agency earned ₱2.73 billion in investment income alone—significantly higher than the ₱1.81 billion posted during the same period in 2024—driven by strategic placements in bonds and other debt securities, money market instruments, equities, and investment properties. Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta highlighted that the agency's investment portfolio stood at ₱158.15 billion as of April 2025, reflecting a 42% year-on-year increase from ₱111.39 billion in April 2024. She noted that this growth forms part of Pag-IBIG Fund's sound and strategic allocation of its more than ₱1.11 trillion in total assets—a milestone the agency reached earlier this month. Based on the latest available data, Pag-IBIG Fund's earning assets have reached ₱1.09 trillion, consisting of ₱856.96 billion in housing-related assets, ₱77.94 billion in short-term loans, and ₱158.12 billion in income-generating investments. The remaining ₱20 million accounts for other assets, including property and equipment, cash, and intangible assets. 'Our investments play a vital role in providing our members with the best possible returns,' Acosta said. 'We begin by meeting our housing investment requirement to help more Filipinos own homes through affordable financing. We also maintain adequate funding for our short-term loans, ensuring members have access to immediate financial assistance. Remaining investible funds are placed in secure instruments that deliver competitive returns while preserving liquidity for members' claims. Through this balanced, disciplined approach—anchored on the strategic allocation of our resources to housing, short-term lending, and investments—we fulfill our mission to safeguard our members' trust and deliver meaningful benefits, the Lingkod Pag-IBIG way.' Meanwhile, the agency also formally welcomed Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling this week as the newly appointed Chairperson of its 11-member Board of Trustees. His leadership is expected to further guide Pag-IBIG Fund's strategic direction in line with the Marcos administration's housing and institutional development agenda.
