
Late night dining done right – Duck & Waffle's 9PM Club
Sometimes it's a case of grab-and-go from the excellent street food vendors that pop up around venues. But other times you want to catch a show and have a proper catch-up with friends, which calls for a restaurant booking.
My advice as a seasoned Fringe-goer? Plan and book ahead. Restaurants get busy, and if you're after late-night dining, many Edinburgh establishments close their kitchens around 9 pm. We're not quite Mediterranean in our dining culture – where heading out for dinner after 8 pm is the norm rather than my usual bedtime!
Edinburgh isn't particularly renowned for late-night dining establishments where you can 'chew the fat' over great cocktails, conversation, and decent food. However, a little birdy let me know that Duck & Waffle does exactly that.
So, getting in practice for my occasional late-night Fringe outings, I headed to Duck & Waffle to try their 9PM Club.
A Gastro-Diner Experience in St James Quarter
Set in the heart of Edinburgh's acclaimed St James Quarter, Duck & Waffle focuses on duck – particularly their signature dish and namesake. This 'gastro diner' experience has become a hallmark of the brand.
They welcome guests for all-day brunch, dinner, Sunday roast (one of the best I've had in Edinburgh, alongside The Bonnington), and cocktails.
The décor is genuinely impressive – from the striking entrance via the lift from Leith Street, to the oversized feathered lampshade extractor fan above the chef counter where guests can perch on bar stools and watch the action unfold, right through to the outdoor terrace. Duck & Waffle deserves a place in your little black book for entertaining friends or visitors who fancy a late-night bite.
The 9PM Club: Sip, Savour, Stay Longer
Their 9PM Club allows you to do exactly that. Every night from 9 pm until close (1 am), you can enjoy 25% off dinner. Reservations must be made in advance – walk-ins aren't eligible – but the excellent news is that the 25% discount applies to your entire bill.
We sampled some of their impressive cocktails on the open-air terrace with views out to the Balmoral clock. Their 'Beverage Book' menu is extensive, covering just about everything under the sun.
With the sun making a welcome appearance and it being a warm summer's evening we took advantage and had our cocktails out on the terrace. What caught our eye was their Tequila Edit – a series of shaken, stirred, and served-with-flair tequila cocktails, reasonably priced at £10 each. Alternatively, you can opt for a tequila cocktail flight, choosing three from the five on offer for just £25.
We indulged in the latter. My favourite was the Ginger Grass – a zesty, tart creation that was less sweet than the Kiwi-Rita (served over a block of ice, though the agave presence made this too sickly for my palate). The Main Character Marg, served with house pickle and chilli, is worth sampling.
Late Night Feast
Time was getting on – well past my usual witching hour. We didn't actually sit down to eat until 9.45 pm, where we were looked after by our lovely Italian waiter, Christian, who embodied everything you want in service: charming, attentive without being overbearing, and genuinely informative.
The menu is divided into snacks, breads, raw, small plates, and large plates – designed, in line with current trends, for sharing.
Famished (having last eaten at lunch), we started with one of their freshly baked breads: the Nduja & Gruyère Cheese with parmesan and herb dip, which proved plenty for two to share. We also ordered their bacon-wrapped dates, stuffed with chorizo and Manchego – these are definitely NOT for sharing. The dates cost £4 each and arrive presented on striking porcelain in nouvelle cuisine style. Stylish, though they're essentially one or two bites!
For main course, my guest chose the signature Duck & Waffle, which Christian helpfully and stylishly served for us. It's a gastro remake of pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup – their signature dish features a waffle topped with crispy leg confit and fried duck egg, accompanied by maple syrup with sesame seeds. Nice enough, though we both agreed it felt more like a brunch dish and was too sweet for me at that time of night.

I opted for something more savoury: the Half Roasted Corn Fed Chicken with wild mushrooms, ratte potatoes, truffles, and an abundance of tarragon. This was a generous serving and delicious. We also ordered Truffle & Parmesan Fries (a generous portion) and Tenderstem Broccoli with hummus and chilli crunch. Honestly, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs – the chicken didn't need the additions.
As the Balmoral Clock hands crept well past my bedtime, we passed on desserts, both happily satiated and very full, before catching the last tram and bus home.
Supporting a Good Cause
If you're quick, they're celebrating Pride with a special close to their hearts. For every Pride special sold, they're donating £1 to LGBT Health and Wellbeing Scotland, the leading charity for LGBT+ adults, providing vital support through counselling, peer groups, and inclusive community events.
On offer: a Thirst Trap cocktail – a floral, fizzy, fabulous delight (Bombay Sapphire gin, aloe vera juice, verjus, Monin bubblegum syrup, crème de cassis, citrus, served long over ice, topped with rose lemonade) for £12, and Rainbow Delight – buttermilk waffle with macerated strawberries, Chantilly rainbow cream, and sprinkles.
Also worth noting: their Sunday Roast, available 11:30 am-4 pm. Their two-course Sunday Roast is a quacking great deal at £32 per person.

The Verdict
Unaccustomed as I am to Mediterranean-style late-night dining, next time I'll probably opt for more small plates and sides rather than bread and a main – avoiding that 3am food-baby feeling and reaching for the antacids!
But with its glamorous interior, genuine style, and attentive service, Duck & Waffle earns a five-star rating from me. It's definitely worth adding to your Fringe dining hit list, or whenever you need somewhere open for late-night dining – just make sure you plan ahead.

Fringe 2025 – Rob Auton: CAN (An Hour-Long Story) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rob Auton began as a Fringe performer in 2012, playing to small but appreciative audiences on the Free Fringe. It was clear at those early performances that he had great potential. His growth as a performer was very evident in his performance of CAN (An Hour-Long Story). Living the Fringe dream Renowned for bringing his themes to life with a mixture of eccentric interactions with the audience, poetic musings, and inspired social observations, he has steadily built up a cult following. His endearing personality, evident in his early Fringe performances, has remained, unaffected by his subsequent success. I first encountered Auton in the Banshee Labyrinth's Banqueting Hall, playing on the Free Fringe. That dark atmospheric space is typical of the type of room used by those beginning their Fringe journey. Auton now plays in large venues, attracting packed out audiences. He 'never dreamt' that this would be the case. He is living the Fringe dream of evolving as a performer and steadily adding more devotees of his work every August. This year, he has been packing out the 168-seater Upstairs at Assembly Roxy. Collective human experience Typifying Auton's approach has been building a show around a single theme, yellow, water, talk etc. In 2017 he performed the excellent Hair Show for which he grew his hair particularly long. At that time he wondered if his hair would survive till the following Fringe; that long hair style has survived in the years since. Auton's latest show picks up on some of the themes of his superb Crowd Show (2021), which focused on collective human experience and bonds between people. That was very much at the heart of this year's rather moving show, which began in a lowkey manner before building impressively to the climax. Motivational speaker. In it Auton takes on the character of CAN, a motivational speaker. Before he arrives, the stage it's covered in a series of very positive verbs, as you might see in the work of such a character. CAN recounted the way in which he had risen to prominence as a motivational speaker after going viral online. He eventually ended up being sought out for advice by the international political elite. His description of the international conference where his ideas were discussed was a real highlight; especially his absurd 'impression' of Taylor Swift. CAN's advice focussed on how small practical steps could become metaphors for an entire approach to life. This is in line with Auton's general style which involves delving into the meaning and significance of seemingly everyday concepts, often in a whimsical and introspective way. Moving the toaster Can's key insight was that the simple act of moving the toaster can transform your approach to life. In short, when you tidy your kitchen, you often do it in a very easy, superficial way. But once you move the toaster and discover the crumbs etc behind and underneath it, you realize that you have to give the kitchen a proper clean. This was CAN's metaphor for life. As with Orton's best work, the idea is both silly but also rather profound, amusing the audience while also getting their brains ticking. Auton's tale is full of the unexpected and surreal, which have always characterized his work. Whereas his early shows were endearingly shambolic, his more recent performances have demonstrated polish and increasing confidence. His earlier shows often featured him reading his poems, often from a large folder (that often threatened to fall apart mid show). Now he uses his poetic abilities to add richness to his narrative. The power of words Auton's use (and clear love of) of language is something that sets him apart from many performers at the Fringe. In his shows, Auton explores the power of words and how language shapes our perception and understanding of the world around us. His rather dead pan delivery is very much a world away from some of the fast-paced comics found across the Fringe. Again this makes Auton stand out in the world of stand-up. Though the energy dipped a little around the typical 40 minute mark, Auton's finale was impressive. He really built to a crescendo, his eyes starting to water as the emotional intensity increased. His desire for others to value the great 'casserole of life' was urgently communicated. Auton really puts himself into the performance and this is felt by the audience. Despite his flat Yorkshire accent, he is capable of really connecting with audiences. Auton has evolved into a Fringe fixture with a (deservedly) loyal following. Survivors moved by play Our Brothers in Cloth
A hard-hitting Fringe production about clerical child abuse has earned praise from survivors. Inspired by true events, Ronan Colfer's Our Brothers in Cloth has also won critical acclaim for its depiction of a family dealing with rumours that their deceased son was abused by the previous parish priest and the fallout among them when sides are taken. The production has had a profound impact on audiences who have shown support in their numbers at this year's Edinburgh Fringe, stressing the importance of non-biased thought-provoking productions. One audience member said: 'The message is crafted with nuance, the actors' pain is palpable, and when you watch it you feel similarly outraged, like you're bearing witness.' Twenty years on from The Ferns Report – a landmark government inquiry in allegations of clerical sexual abuse in the diocese of Ferns in Co. Wexford, Ireland – this bold production showcases the impact that this kind of abuse has had not only on the victims, but on the families and the communities as well. Our Brothers in Cloth is backed by Irish activist and survivor, Colm O'Gorman who said: 'Lives have been blighted and families have been torn apart. For many, the struggle to survive and move beyond such trauma is ongoing.' Other survivors of clerical abuse, such as Sean Faloon, have also supported the show. He said: 'It educates people on how families can be broken so easily by any type of abuse presented to the family.' The play highlights the catastrophic damage done to families and communities, and the reluctance of the Catholic church to take accountability and apologise for the heinous actions of their ministers of the faith – heinous actions which were clearly proven in The Ferns Report and similar reports which have followed. Our Brothers in Cloth is running until Monday, August 25 at the Edinburgh Fringe, and is proudly supported by survivor charities including The Survivors Trust, Nexus NI, and ICAP. Director, dramaturge, and producer Ryan McVeigh says: 'Our audience are taken on a journey of bravery, heartache, and loss in this memory play. Poke the Bear Productions' mission is to rattle the cages of our audience, provoking them to rethink their moral and ethical position, and to spark debates within themselves and with one another after the show. 'Our Brothers in Cloth leaves them to contemplate their relationship with the church, their families, and how essential it is to speak for the silenced and abused.' Actor and producer Oli Fyne says: 'It has been a profoundly moving experience bringing this important story to my home town of Edinburgh, we've all worked hard getting this production to audiences and have been deeply moved by the passionate reception. We are excited to continue with this momentum, taking the show forward to audiences around the UK and Ireland.'
