Demonstrate goodwill by apologising: KVS to Kamal Haasan

Dharwad: Condemning the remarks of Tamil actor Kamal Haasan regarding Kannada language, a group of senior writers, linguists and Kannada activists staged a demonstration in front of deputy commissioner's office in Dharwad on Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under the aegis of Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha (KVS), the protesters urged Haasan to show his goodwill towards Kannada and Kannadigas by tendering an apology for making the remark and hurting the sentiments of Kannada people. KVS president Chandrakant Bellad said actor Haasan had said Tamil is the root of Kannada and attributed it metaphorically to the "mother-child relationship," he said. Across Karnataka, protests and condemnations broke out in response to his statement. Even when the Karnataka high court questioned the comment and advised him to apologise to Kannadigas, the actor continues to be adamant, Bellad said. "Had a linguistic researcher or a historian of languages made such a comment, it might have carried some weight. But Haasan, who lacks any knowledge about the origin and evolution of the language had no business making such claims. When speaking about language and borders, one must exercise caution. No one should play with the emotions of the people," the protesters said. Scholars of both Tamil and Kannada have already provided documented evidence about Dravidian languages. According to linguistic experts, Dravidian languages evolved parallelly, and no language gave birth to another. The history of the Kannada language dates to thousands of years, the speakers said. Pointing out that Kannadigas have always desired a peaceful life and have shown respect toward all languages, the speakers said KVS will intensify the agitation against Haasan if he does not apologise and withdrawn his statement. Later, they submitted a memorandum addressed to the governor to additional deputy commissioner.

Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq feted in Shivamogga

Leaders of various progressive organisations, activists, elected representatives and officers of Hassan joined hands together here on Monday to felicitate writer and advocate Banu Mushtaq, who recently won the International Booker Prize for her collection of stories, translated into English, Heart Lamp. Baragur Ramachandrappa said the International Booker Prize was an honour to the Kannada's intellect. 'Ms. Mushtaq wrote stories in Kannada, and Deepa Bhasthi translated them into English. Both writers deserve appreciation,' he said. The district enjoys the distinction of contributing the first Kannada inscription found at Halmidi village in Belur taluk and the first International Booker Prize for Kannada. 'Ms. Musthaq wrote stories that she picked from the world around her. The prize she won is recognition of her involvement in struggles for the emancipation of the working class, women, Dalits, and all downtrodden sections. She has been actively involved in the Bandaya movement in the State', he said. Ms. Musthaq said that India is known for diversity, and it was the duty of every individual to uphold this (diversity). 'Literature is one of the forces that celebrates diversity and, with that, it keeps the country united,' she said. The prize, she said, was not only for her contribution to literature. 'I have participated in the protests and struggles for social justice and equality. My writing is not separated from my these activities. I consider this prize as a recognition of all such activities,' Ms. Mushtaq said. H.S. Anupama, writer, spoke about the contributions of Ms. Mushtaq. Lok Sabha member Shreyas M. Writers, intellectuals condemn Kamal Haasan's Kannada remark

Scores of writers, artists, linguists, intellectuals and Kannada activists staged a day-long protest in Dharwad on Monday in protest against the recent remark made by veteran multi-lingual actor Kamal Haasan on the origin of Kannada language. During the protest spearheaded by Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha, the protestors staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Dharwad and condemned in strong words the remark and the subsequent statement of the actor. The protest was in pursuance of the decisions taken during the recent consultative meeting of the sangha after the actor refused to apologise for his remark. Addressing the protestors, president of the sangha Chandrakanth Bellad, general secretary Shankar Halagatti and others, including writers and intellectuals, strongly condemned the adamant behaviour of the actor, despite the strong criticism and a series of protest across the State against him on the issue. They said that the veteran actor is behaving in an irresponsible manner even after a court gave him an option to apologise for his remark. The speakers clarified that the sangha has no opposition either to Tamil language or Tamil-speaking people as it is a known fact that languages originating from Proto-Dravidian language evolved into different languages. They also further clarified that their protest is not against Tamil language or Tamils but against an irresponsible statement by Kamal Haasan and his subsequent conduct. The protestors demanded that he withdraw his baseless statement on Kannada language, express regret and apologise to Kannadigas. If he failed to do so, the sangha will be compelled to launch an intense State-wide agitation, they said.
