Stanley knife left in Kensington nursery picked up by child sparking urgent safety probe

Yahoo09-08-2025
A West London council ordered an urgent investigation after a child picked up a Stanley knife left at a nursery by a contractor.
Kensington and Chelsea Council said it requested Bellrock carry out an urgent investigation which they said happened swiftly. The council said they felt assured that recommendations have been implemented following the incident in June, which has only just come to light.
The council confirmed that on June 27, a small Stanley knife was found on a wooden unit at St Quintin Centre for Disabled Children and Young People on Wallingford Avenue, near Ladbroke Grove in Kensington.
The knife was found by one child who then passed it on to another before it was handed over to a member of staff.
No one was injured in the incident. Neither Kensington and Chelsea Council nor Bellrock confirmed the nature of the works that took place at the time of the incident.
A council spokesperson said: 'The safety and wellbeing of the children are of utmost importance to us, and we took this incident extremely seriously. This was a rare and unfortunate case of human error and thankfully nobody was hurt.
'The nursery staff followed procedure by immediately referring the incident to the council. The parents of the children involved were promptly informed and given opportunities to discuss their concerns. We have conducted thorough risk assessments and reviewed our protocols.
'We requested that Bellrock undertake an urgent investigation, which happened swiftly and we are reassured that recommendations have already been implemented.'
A Bellrock statement read: 'We recognise the seriousness of this incident and have treated it with the utmost urgency. The safety and wellbeing of everyone in the environments where we work remains our highest priority.
'Immediately following the incident, we launched a full internal investigation, and appropriate action has been taken in line with our strict health and safety protocols.
'We remain fully committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism and care in every environment we serve.
'Our longstanding partnership with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea remains strong, and we continue to work closely together to ensure the highest levels of trust and safety are maintained.'
Bellrock did not clarify what actions it took.
St Quintin Centre offers a specialist play service, support and activities for disabled children, young people and their families, according to its website.
The centre is open seven days a week and offers term-time support from birth to five years old. They also offer afterschool services, Saturday and holiday club support for five to 18-year-olds.

Everything's Coming Up ‘Roblox' As Chris Hansen And Schlep Dig Into Its Predator Problem

It may be the biggest gaming platform in the world, but Roblox could not have had a worse week. While the problem of adults preying on vulnerable children in the online space, potentially leading to real-world harm, is not new to Roblox, things ramped up dramatically this week with the banning of Schlep, a long-time Roblox community member who made a name for himself catching online predators within the game, and his work actually led to six arrests so far. He says that he himself was 'groomed' in the game when he was younger, and it led him to do this work. Roblox has now banned him, saying that 'vigilantes' have at times created an 'unsafe environment for users,' which many players took to mean the predators they were trying to catch. While that may not have been what Roblox was trying to say, the community blowback was immediate and forceful. The same week, Roblox caught the eye of the Attorney General in Louisiana who announced she was suing the game for failing to protect children, and Roblox issued a lengthy rebuttal to the claims, detailing its various attempts and systems to keep children safe. But what's next, Chris Hansen showing up and telling people to take a seat? Well, about that. There were seemingly hard-to-believe rumors that To Catch a Predator's Chris Hansen was also going to throw a spotlight on Roblox, but Hansen confirmed the project on social media on Friday. He said he has been speaking with law enforcement, victims and working with people like the banned Schlep on the upcoming airing of the completed investigation. Though no, it's unlikely they'll be virtually trapping people like his old show. That includes blocking users under 17 from Social Hangouts in private spaces. Those would be: And yes, before you ask, there are countless virtual sexual things that do in fact go on in those kinds of spaces, hence why these rules are now being enforced in the first place. There are more changes laid out here, and CEO David Baszucki made a lengthy YouTube video about them (which unsurprisingly, has more downvotes than upvotes): Given how long-running this problem has been, and the sheer size of Roblox, which has more active users than the entire Steam PC ecosystem, it's very clear this is not the last we'll hear of such problems, no matter what changes are made. But these latest situations, the bans, the lawsuits, the uh, Chris Hansen shows, are all still ongoing and we'll have to wait and see what comes from them. 'Abusive' man who murdered partner before attempting to stage false scene convicted after police uncover lies

An 'abusive' man from west London who murdered his partner before attempting to stage a false scene has been convicted after police uncovered his lies. Rita Fleming, 70, was found by parademics unresponsive in a bath at her home in Maida Hill, Kensington on June 23, 2024 after being killed by Clifford Cowen, 59. She was fully dressed and covered in severe injuries, prompting the Metropolitan Police to launch an investigation. But Cowen claimed to have been concerned for Ms Fleming's welfare after looking through the letterbox of her property. He repeatedly insisted officers check CCTV footage to prove he had not been at the address, prompting police to arrest him at the scene. Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who led the Met's investigation, said it soon transpired he was a 'controlling and abusive partner' who attempted to portray the pair's relationship as a loving one. Scotland Yard later uncovered messages and voice notes indicating that Cowen would regularly get drunk and verbally abuse Fleming. We understand how isolated victims of domestic abuse can feel Alison Foxwell Cowen was charged with murder and found guilty following the conclusion of a four-week trial at the Old Bailey, taking a jury just six hours to reach their verdict. DCI Foxwell added: "He attempted to cover up his actions with an elaborate alibi, however officers were able to unpick this along with evidence of his controlling and manipulative behaviour. Rita was much loved by her family and friends and I hope that Cowen's conviction gives them an element of closure. "We understand how isolated victims of domestic abuse can feel. We encourage anyone to contact police and report so we can support alongside our specialist partner agencies." Cowen, of Kensington Park Gardens, will be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on September 1.
