Months-long road closures beginning this week

Yahoo2 days ago

(WKBN) — Multiple roads throughout Mercer and Columbiana counties will be closed starting Monday for some months-long construction projects.
In Springfield Township, Blacktown Road will be closed between State Route 258 and Lee Road beginning Monday to fix the bridge over Interstate 79. The $1.4 million project will repair the concrete deck, add a new surface and pave both sides of the road.
Crews will also fix the beams, piers and supports of the bridge. Detours will be posted on site.
About 550 vehicles use the bridge every day. The project is expected to be finished by October.
In Wilmington Township and New Wilmington Borough, work will begin Monday to improve State Route 158. Traffic will be limited to one lane on State Route 18 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until mid-November.
Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone. The project costs $3.87 million and includes fixing the road, improving drainage, repairing structures, fixing the base, updating guard rails and painting road markings.
In Columbiana County, State Route 39 will close Monday for the last phase of a big road repair project.
The road will be closed from Steubenville Pike Road to Clarks Mill Road for 60 days. The project will fix almost five miles of S.R. 39 from Salineville to Steubenville Pike Road in Highlandtown.
Residents, businesses and property owners can still use the road, but others must use the detours

Wisconsin Better Business Bureau exposes top elderly scams and offers prevention advice

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WFRV) – Recently, the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau released the top scams used to take advantage of older adults and the elderly while also providing tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. According to a release, investment/cryptocurrency scams continue to be the riskiest scams for those aged 55+, with romance scams being the riskiest for those who are aged 65+. BBB officials also say purchase scams and home improvement scams are towards the top of the list when it comes to attempting to trick older or elderly community members. When it comes to scams, officials say it is important to know the red flags. The following are some of the most common 'too-good-to-be-true' tactics scammers use to get a victim's money or personal information: 'Free,' 'low cost,' or 'buy one, get one' deal Request for unusual payment types (i.e., prepaid debit cards or wired funds) Claims that you only pay postage or administrative fees Pressure to act now and/or aggressive tones Deals that must be secured with a credit card or bank account information Sure-fire investment opportunities Charities that send 100% of your donation directly to the victims Officials also add that potential victims should keep in mind that it is easy to spoof caller IDs. No matter what the caller ID says, government agencies will not make unsolicited calls, and when in doubt, the best thing to do is hang up the phone and call the official source to verify the original call. Other ways to avoid becoming a victim of a scam include the following: Register a personal phone number on the National Do-Not-Call registry Reduces the number of unsolicited phone calls Only hire trustworthy, licensed contractors Don't hire someone who just shows up at the door for work around the home or for an inspection. Use the BBB website to search for accredited businesses that can help with repair work and other home-related needs. Think before clicking Older adults commonly have difficulty with modern technology. Links found in unsolicited emails or social media posts and comments can be dangerous. Only click on links that come from people who are known and trusted Keep antivirus software up to date on all electronic devices. Guard personal information carefully Never share personal information with strangers via phone, email, or on social media. Review bank statements, credit statements, and transactions regularly to check for accuracy. For more information on how to avoid falling victim to a scam, click here. Hot, hazy through Wednesday before a stormy Thursday

Happy Tuesday! It's a quiet, cool, comfortable, and foggy start to the day. The thickest of fog will be found in our typical valley locations, so be sure to drive safely. Temperatures are in the 40s/50s which means you may need a light layer (sweater, light jacket, etc.) early on. The one accessory you won't want to forget today? The shades! Highs will hike into the upper 70s to low 80s with tolerable humidity, sun, clouds, and wildfire smoke. That extra haziness in the sky because of Canadian wildfire smoke will have minimal impacts on our overall air quality. Our AQI will check in at moderate today which means those most sensitive groups (elderly, very young, lung/health conditions) should take it easy. Overnight into Wednesday morning, it's hazy and mild with lows near 60. Wednesday will be very hot, sunny, and dry with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. It will be commonplace to see some fair weather clouds bubbling up late in the day as a cold front approaches from the northwest. Overnight into Thursday morning, a few showers can't be ruled out in northern New York. Lows will only tumble into the mid 60s. After a warm Thursday morning, it will be easy to get back into the mid 80s Thursday afternoon with a mix of sun, clouds, and isolated strong to severe storms. The best chance for those big boomers will reside from central Vermont and points south, but it's something we're continuing to fine tune and watch closely. Nevertheless, Thursday will be our next best chance for active weather. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
