New Leaf Cider Co in Port Crane makes a wide variety of hard ciders, ranging from sweet to dry and including a number of creative flavors.
It's original brew, First Leaf, is still a staple, but its most popular variety is Caramel Apple.
New Leaf was founded by Dustin and Leann Beagell in 2018 and opened its tasting room on Nowlan Road just before the pandemic began.
Dustin says COVID was a blessing in disguise as it gave him more time to work out the business model.
In addition to its year-round flavors, New Leaf produces seasonal varieties as well as some weekly one-offs like Sweet Mango, Pink Lemonade, and Fruity Pebbles.
Beagell says he especially loves turning cider skeptics into cider lovers.
'Cider has changed so much in the last 5 to 10 years. The variety and styles of cider has changed so much that there are a lot more options that people just haven't had a chance to try and have that stereotype in the back of their head. Or maybe think that they don't like it because they had a real sweet one 10 years ago and just decided that's what cider is,' said Beagell.
Beagell says he was interested to learn that hard cider was very popular in the US before Prohibition and that it's been making a comeback over the past decade.
A home brewer of beer, Dustin says he first tried his hand at cider for fun and because Leann didn't care for his beer. He says the food production industry was completely new to him, but he was encouraged by New York State's farm beverage legislation that reduced the cost and paperwork.
'It made it much easier to go out and give it a shot when I wasn't sure, it was more of an experiment. At the time, we just wanted to give it a try, and that made it really easier to get into. I may not have done it if that wasn't an option,' said Beagell.
All of New Leaf's cider comes from New York State grown apples, and the tasting room has become popular with folks interested in agri-tourism.
Beagell says all of the ciders are based on the same juice, which is pressed by the orchard and tested for consistency in terms of sugar content, acidity, and tannins.
New Leaf is a family affair with Dustin's brother Kyle serving as the head cider maker, and his father Greg helps out in a variety of ways.
They've even planted a small orchard on the Beagell farm to produce a special small batch each year.

Immigration crackdown, tariffs blamed by some for tourist slowdown in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS — Tourism in Las Vegas is slumping this summer, with resorts and convention centers reporting fewer visitors compared to last year, especially from abroad, and some officials are blaming the Trump administration's tariffs and immigration policies for the decline. The city known for lavish shows, endless buffets and around-the-clock gambling welcomed just under 3.1 million tourists in June, an 11% drop compared to the same time in 2024. There were 13% fewer international travelers, and hotel occupancy fell by about 15%, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Mayor Shelley Berkley said tourism from Canada — Nevada's largest international market — has dried up from a torrent "to a drip." Same with Mexico. "We have a number of very high rollers that come in from Mexico that aren't so keen on coming in right now. And that seems to be the prevailing attitude internationally," Berkley told reporters earlier this month. Ted Pappageorge, head of the powerful Culinary Workers Union, called it the "Trump slump." He said visits from Southern California, home to a large Latino population, were also drying up because people are afraid of the administration's immigration crackdown. "If you if you tell the rest of the world they're not welcome, then they won't come," Pappageorge said. Canadian airline data shows fewer passengers from north of the border are arriving at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Air Canada saw its passenger numbers fall by 33% in June compared to the same time a year ago, while WestJet had a 31% drop. The low-cost carrier Flair reported a whopping 62% decline. Travel agents in Canada said there's been a significant downturn in clients wanting to visit the U.S. overall, and Las Vegas in particular. Wendy Hart, who books trips from Windsor, Ontario, said the reason was "politics, for sure." She speculated that it was a point of "national pride" that people were staying away from the U.S. after President Donald Trump said he wanted to make Canada the 51st state. "The tariffs are a big thing too. They seem to be contributing to the rising cost of everything," Hart said. At downtown's Circa Resort and Casino, international visits have dipped, especially from Canada and Japan, according to owner and CEO Derek Stevens. But the downturn comes after a post-COVID spike, Stevens said. And while hotel room bookings are slack, gaming numbers, especially for sports betting, are still strong, he said. "It's not as if the sky is falling," he said. Wealthier visitors are still coming, he said, and Circa has introduced cheaper package deals to lure those with less money to spend. "There have been many stories written about how the 'end is near' in Vegas," he said. "But Vegas continues to reinvent itself as a destination worth visiting." On AAA's annual top ten list of top Labor Day destinations, Las Vegas slipped this year to the last spot, from number six in 2024. Seattle and Orlando, Florida — home to Disneyworld — hold steady in the top two spots, with New York City moving up to third for 2025. Reports of declining tourism were news to Alison Ferry, who arrived from Donegal, Ireland, to find big crowds at casinos and the Vegas Strip. "It's very busy. It has been busy everywhere that we've gone. And really, really hot," Ferry said. She added that she doesn't pay much attention to U.S. politics. Just off the strip, there's been no slowdown at the Pinball Museum, which showcases games from the 1930s through today. Manager Jim Arnold said the two-decade-old attraction is recession-proof because it's one of the few places to offer free parking and free admission. "We've decided that our plan is just to ignore inflation and pretend it doesn't exist," Arnold said. "So you still take a quarter out of your pocket and put it in a game, and you don't pay a resort fee or a cancelation fee or any of that jazz." But Arnold said he's not surprised that overall tourism might be slowing because of skyrocketing prices at high-end restaurants and resorts, which "squeezes out the low end tourist." The mayor said the rising cost of food, hotel rooms and attractions also keeps visitors away. "People are feeling that they're getting nickeled and dimed, and they're not getting value for their dollar," Berkley said. She called on business owners to "see if we can't make it more affordable" for tourists. "And that's all we want. We want them to come and have good time, spend their money, go home," the mayor said. "Then come back in six months."

US single-family starts, permits rise in July

Single-family housing starts, which account for the bulk of homebuilding, increased 2.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 939,000 units last month, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said on Tuesday. Permits for future single-family homebuilding edged up 0.5% to a rate of 870,000 units. 'Job hugging' has replaced job-hopping, consultants say, as workers cling to current roles
The so-called great resignation has become the "great stay." But experts say workers aren't just staying — they're "job hugging." Job hugging is the act of holding onto a job "for dear life," consultants at Korn Ferry, an organizational consulting firm, wrote last week. The rate at which workers are voluntarily leaving their jobs — known as the quits rate — has hovered around 2% since the start of the year, according to data from the U.S. Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Outside of the initial days of the Covid-19 pandemic, levels haven't been that consistently low since early 2016. The quits rate is a barometer of workers' perceptions of the broader labor market, said Laura Ullrich, director of economic research in North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab. In this case, they may be nervous about getting another job or aren't enthusiastic about their ability to find one, she said. The current clinging is a stark contrast from the historic rate of job-hopping that workers exhibited in 2021 and 2022, but experts say it makes sense given current labor market trends. The share of jobseekers who are "not confident at all" that there are "plenty of jobs" available has increased steadily, to 38% in the second quarter from about 26% three years earlier, according to a quarterly poll by ZipRecruiter. "There is this stagnation in the labor market, where the hires, quits and layoff rates are low," said Ullrich. "There's just not a lot of movement at all." 'Uncertainty in the world' "There's quite a bit of uncertainty in the world — economic, political, global — and I think uncertainty causes people to naturally" remain in a holding pattern, said Matt Bohn, an executive search consultant at Korn Ferry. He equated the dynamic to skittish investors who sometimes sit on the sidelines, waiting for an investment opportunity. The hiring rate over the past year or so has plunged to its lowest pace in more than a decade (excluding the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic) — meaning those who want to look for a new job may have a relatively tough time finding one. Job growth in recent months has also slowed sharply, which economists point to as evidence of a broader economic slowdown. The ratio of job openings per unemployed worker has fallen by about half since peaking at about 2:1 in March 2022; it was roughly 1:1 in June 2025, the latest month of available federal data. More CEOs reported plans to shrink their workforce over the next 12 months than expand it — the first time that's occurred since 2020, according to a Conference Board quarterly poll published earlier this month. The shares were 34% to 27%, respectively. While it's not inherently bad to stay in a job for a long time, job "hugging" can pose some risks for the unwary, experts said. For one, they may be sacrificing some earnings growth, since job switchers generally command higher wage growth than those who remain in their current roles, Ullrich said. For example, workers who get too comfortable in their current role may stagnate rather than take on additional responsibility or learn new skills, which may impact marketability and career growth when the labor market improves, Bohn said. Employers may also decide such workers are no longer meeting their performance standards, he added. Additionally, a lack of movement in the job market may make it harder for new entrants like recent graduates to find work, Ullrich said.
