Pink Oyster card reader rule could save you money while travelling around London
Oyster card readers on London Overground and Underground stations are often yellow and the majority of people know to tap in and out in order to not be overcharged. However, pink card readers are dotted around certain stations - and most people don't know what they mean and how they're different.
Pink readers (route validators) and are used to track your journey and to let your Oyster card know that you did not travel to Zone 1, so you get a cheaper fare. Failing to tap the pink reader, means it'll automatically be assumed that you did travel via Zone 1 and you will be charged the higher fare. So make sure to always check and tap.
Pink readers are found inside of Zone 2. One creator on TikTok, known as @theblacktrainboy shared a video explaining how the pink card readers can help you save on your travels.
He shared an example to simplify things for viewers: "So I'm out and about on the train and I am not passing through Zone 1 going to West Croydon from Stratford, I tap on these pink readers to let my Oyster card know that I haven't passed through Zone 1 and I don't get charged a much higher fare."
He continued sharing knowledge on what all the validators mean from the yellow reader to the green one for trams. He gave the example for the yellow reader: "If you were to end a journey on the Underground Stratford Station and get on a train to Essex, you could tap out here and continue with a separate ticket towards Essex."
The TikTok creator said the green card readers "work the same way as a bus, you only tap in on it and you don't need to tap out. It also works the same way as a bus with the hopper fare as you can make as much journeys as you want in one hour without being charged anymore".
Many thanked the creator for the new information. One commented "so TFL is scamming us but now you are saving us! had no idea thank you". Another said: "13 years after moving here (and living in Zone 2)...now I know"
The pink readers will always be found on or in between platforms and so far are on 17 stations.

I was turned away by three Spanish hospitals 'because I'm British'
A British holidaymaker revealed her 'holiday from hell' after being turned away from three hospitals in Spain whilst suffering from an extreme bout of travellers diarrhoea. Kay, who regularly shares her globe-trotting adventures as a 'military wife' on TikTok, took to the platform earlier this month to recount her nightmare experience. In a series of clips posted to her account @kayholsav, the traveller described how she was largely confined to her room at the Marylanza hotel in Tenerife after developing an upset stomach from eating a salad she claimed was 'washed with tap water.' Traveller's diarrhoea, often referred to as 'holiday tummy,' is a common ailment for holidaymakers staying in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. It is often caused by consuming contaminated food or tap water that may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, or parasites. In one video, she laid bare the grim details of her illness, admitting she'd 'rather be dragged through a bush backwards' than have to endure a similar experience. She said: 'I arrived on the Friday, had dinner at the hotel, and from then on I cannot physically keep anything in my system. We are now on Sunday, and I still physically cannot keep anything in my system.' The content creator reiterated that she follows a vegetarian diet and had only consumed fresh vegetables and pizza at the four-star TUI resort, and had also avoided the tap water. The content creator (pictured at a private hospital in Tenerife) reiterated that she follows a vegetarian diet and had only consumed fresh vegetables and pizza at the four-star TUI resort, and had also avoided the tap water Kay added that her symptoms were so extreme that a doctor had to be called out to her hotel room, which had cost her €100. She vented her frustration as she explained the doctor had warned that she was approximately two days away from being admitted into hospital. However, in a follow-up clip, she later claims she was turned away from three local hospitals on the popular island because she was an English tourist. In an accompanying comment, she says: 'The issue wasn't just the language barrier they were incredibly dismissive and honestly came across as quite racist. It felt like they just didn't want to help. 'That's exactly why we always get private travel insurance now private clinics actually treat you with respect and cater to all nationalities, not just locals. Luckily I ended up at the right hospital.' After admitting herself to a private facility, she shared in another video the treatments she'd received, such as an IV drip, fluids, antibiotics. Though she admitted her ordeal was the 'scariest experience of her life,' Kay went on to make a full recovery, and expressed her gratitude for the 'amazing' staff at the hospital. She said: 'Bless them - they didn't understand me, nor did I them, but they did their best. In a follow-up clip , she later claimed she was turned away from three local hospitals on the popular island because she was an English tourist 'I had severe dehydration and I had a bad stomach infection. They sent me home with antibiotics, probiotics and other stuff for my stomach.' Dozens of viewers flocked to Kay's page to share similar experiences of food poisoning in Spain and abroad. One person declared: 'I never ever ever will eat salad abroad for this you think they wash it in bottle water??' Another said: 'This happened to me in Benidorm!! I went for 10 days and was sick for 7 days, couldn't leave my room and couldn't get off the toilet. I feel so sorry for you girl, it's hell.' A third wrote: 'This happened me this year in Majorca, be careful, I'd bacterial stomach infection on return contaminated water (which I didn't drink) sometimes can b from the icecubes in drinks.' Regarding her negative experience with local hospitals, one person said: 'Everyone gets treated like this at public hospitals even Spanish residents, unfortunately doctors are pretty miserable in state hospitals due to long work hours and mediocre salaries.' Another wrote: 'The Insurance company usually has a list of hospitals they will accept. They want you to use the GHIC card and go to a public hospital. I had to do this in Mainland Spain this June.' The Daily Mail has reached out to TUI and the Marylanza Hotel for further comment. Dozens of viewers flocked to Kay's page to share similar experiences of food poisoning in Spain and abroad It comes after a flight attendant revealed the flight from Edinburgh to Alicante has the worst passengers. The staff shared a harrowing story of an altercation that took place at 30,000 feet – declaring it the most traumatic flight of her career. It involved three groups on stag dos – outnumbering the four members of cabin crew. 'It was just absolute chaos, they were screaming,' 32-year-old Kristina Galvydyte told The Telegraph. 'Imagine a night out in any British town at midnight on a Friday. It was like that.'

I paid £4,000 for a holiday to Turkey - but was left disgusted by the 'bed' my child had to sleep on
A British mother has been left furious after shelling out thousands for a room at a luxury Turkish hotel that reportedly only provided a sofa-bed for her child to sleep on. Harley, who goes by @harleyjxo on TikTok, travelled with her partner and their two children to Antalya, Turkey, in July, where they'd booked a stay at Hotel Turan Prince. The all-inclusive resort, also known as Club Turan Prince World, boasts five-star accommodation, a family-friendly atmosphere, multiple restaurants and a wide range of activities and entertainment. In a clip on TikTok, the mother explains: 'Imagine paying £4000 for a holiday for a family of four, for them to expect an 11-year-old child to sleep on a CHAIR.' She demonstrated how the small, square-shaped brown chair transforms into a bed by pulling out a padded seat from its base and extending it to form a longer sofa. Urging holidaymakers to steer clear of the hotel, the content creator adds in a follow-up comment: 'Is that a joke? And to be told there's nothing that they can do about it!! a CHAIR!!! wtf!! 'There's so much wrong with this hotel and I've not even been here 24 hours yet! Mad DO NOT BOOK. Was another family in reception who's child was CRYING cos there poor back from sleeping last night.' The clip, which has since been viewed over 800K times, has prompted 400 viewers to share their opinion - though not everyone sided with the mother. The mother demonstrated how the small, square-shaped brown chair transforms into a bed by pulling out a padded seat from its base and extending it to form a longer sofa One person wrote, 'That's a perfect bed for a child,' while another quizzed, 'So why didn't you get a room with actual bed for your child.' A third said: 'Imagine spending 4 grand on a room and not checking the photos to see what the beds look like first.' A fourth added, 'Im sorry is this not a normal place for a kid to sleep in?' while a fifth commented, 'It's looking cheap but as a KID this would have been super exciting.' However, other viewers came to the mother's defense, as one wrote: 'This is what puts me off Turkey! Would love to go but the accommodation for families is shocking!!' Another wrote: 'Had this a few times recently and we're paying £7/8k for a week. It's disgusting tbh. Why can't they have a bed!' A third said: 'The reviews on trip advisor say it all…. Do NOT eat the food!!' to which the mother responded: 'The food is awful too!' The Daily Mail has reached out to Hotel Turan Prince for further comment. It comes after a family's dream holiday was ruined after they were left stranded due to a booking blunder. The clip, which has since been viewed over 800K times, has prompted 400 viewers to share their opinion - though not everyone sided with the mother Darren Tanser shared his nightmare experience on TikTok, @darrentanser, after he paid £6,000 for trip to Turkey. He raged: 'LoveHolidays are an absolute joke, I recommend none of you ever book with them at all. 'I spent 425 minutes throughout yesterday, which is seven hours, on the phone to LoveHolidays on and off, they never called me back once for any issue, I had to continuously call them.' The family had arrived at the hotel at 5am, only to be told their booking 'hadn't been secured'.

London travel disruption this weekend: full list of tube and train closures for August 15-17
London is hot again! And with only a few weeks of summer remaining, you better be making the most of it. The weekend is your chance to get out into the city and revel in all the brilliant food and culture it has to offer – like dancing at the South Facing Festival in Crystal Park, dining at the new Speedboat Bar in Notting Hill or sitting down for some comedy in Camden. However you plan to fill this weekend, you'll probably need to use the tube at least once or twice. The last thing you want is to discover last minute that the train you wanted to get is cancelled – so to help you plan ahead, we've put together a list of all the closures that TfL has scheduled over the next few days. From shutdowns of entire Overground lines to cancelled Piccadilly services, here are all the closures and disruptions happening across London's tube and train network this weekend. Bakerloo line There'll be no Bakerloo trains running between Queens Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on Saturday or Sunday. There's also no Lioness line between Euston and Watford Junction (more on that below) so you'll need to you Southern services – which run on Saturday only – or London North Western Railway, which will be available both days. There will also be a replacement bus that you can use. Piccadilly line Between 12.30am and 6am on Saturday, you won't be able to get the Piccadilly line between King's Cross St Pancras and Cockfosters. There'll be a replacement bus running between Finsbury Park and Cockfosters instead. Then, from 6am on Saturday and for the rest of the weekend, there will be no Piccadilly services between Wood Green and Cockfosters. You can get the replacement bus PL5 instead. There'll also be no service between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge but you can hop on the Metropolitan line instead. DLR On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be no DLR service between Poplar and Beckton. A replacement bus will be running instead between Canary Wharf and Gallions Reach via Blackwall (for Poplar), East India, Canning Town, Royal Victoria, Custom House, Prince Regent, Royal Albert, Beckton Park, Cyprus and Beckton. Overground Lioness line The entire Lioness line (from Euston to Watford Junction) will be shut across the weekend. TfL recommends that you use local bus services for South Hampstead and Kilburn High Road, Southern services for Wembley Central, Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction (Saturday only) and London North Western Railway services for Euston, Harrow & Wealdstone, Bushey and Watford Junction. Replacement bus service 718 will also be running between Queen's Park and Watford Junction. Mildmay line You won't be able to catch a Mildmay train between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction on Sunday. Southern Railway services won't be running that day either, so you should use local buses. Suffragette line No Suffragette trains are running between Barking and Barking Riverside on Sunday. There will also be a reduced service between Gospel Oak and Barking, with trains only running every 20 minutes. Weaver line The whole of the Weaver line will be shut on on Sunday morning until 10.15am.
