Pink Oyster card reader rule could save you money while travelling around London
Oyster card readers on London Overground and Underground stations are often yellow and the majority of people know to tap in and out in order to not be overcharged. However, pink card readers are dotted around certain stations - and most people don't know what they mean and how they're different.
Pink readers (route validators) and are used to track your journey and to let your Oyster card know that you did not travel to Zone 1, so you get a cheaper fare. Failing to tap the pink reader, means it'll automatically be assumed that you did travel via Zone 1 and you will be charged the higher fare. So make sure to always check and tap.
Pink readers are found inside of Zone 2. One creator on TikTok, known as @theblacktrainboy shared a video explaining how the pink card readers can help you save on your travels.
He shared an example to simplify things for viewers: "So I'm out and about on the train and I am not passing through Zone 1 going to West Croydon from Stratford, I tap on these pink readers to let my Oyster card know that I haven't passed through Zone 1 and I don't get charged a much higher fare."
He continued sharing knowledge on what all the validators mean from the yellow reader to the green one for trams. He gave the example for the yellow reader: "If you were to end a journey on the Underground Stratford Station and get on a train to Essex, you could tap out here and continue with a separate ticket towards Essex."
The TikTok creator said the green card readers "work the same way as a bus, you only tap in on it and you don't need to tap out. It also works the same way as a bus with the hopper fare as you can make as much journeys as you want in one hour without being charged anymore".
Many thanked the creator for the new information. One commented "so TFL is scamming us but now you are saving us! had no idea thank you". Another said: "13 years after moving here (and living in Zone 2)...now I know"
The pink readers will always be found on or in between platforms and so far are on 17 stations.

She said: 'I arrived on the Friday, had dinner at the hotel, and from then on I cannot physically keep anything in my system. We are now on Sunday, and I still physically cannot keep anything in my system.' A British mother has been left furious after shelling out thousands for a room at a luxury Turkish hotel that reportedly only provided a sofa-bed for her child to sleep on. Harley, who goes by @harleyjxo on TikTok, travelled with her partner and their two children to Antalya, Turkey, in July, where they'd booked a stay at Hotel Turan Prince. The all-inclusive resort, also known as Club Turan Prince World, boasts five-star accommodation, a family-friendly atmosphere, multiple restaurants and a wide range of activities and entertainment. In a clip on TikTok, the mother explains: 'Imagine paying £4000 for a holiday for a family of four, for them to expect an 11-year-old child to sleep on a CHAIR.' She demonstrated how the small, square-shaped brown chair transforms into a bed by pulling out a padded seat from its base and extending it to form a longer sofa. London travel disruption this weekend: full list of tube and train closures for August 15-17
London is hot again! And with only a few weeks of summer remaining, you better be making the most of it. The weekend is your chance to get out into the city and revel in all the brilliant food and culture it has to offer – like dancing at the South Facing Festival in Crystal Park, dining at the new Speedboat Bar in Notting Hill or sitting down for some comedy in Camden. However you plan to fill this weekend, you'll probably need to use the tube at least once or twice. The last thing you want is to discover last minute that the train you wanted to get is cancelled – so to help you plan ahead, we've put together a list of all the closures that TfL has scheduled over the next few days. From shutdowns of entire Overground lines to cancelled Piccadilly services, here are all the closures and disruptions happening across London's tube and train network this weekend. Bakerloo line There'll be no Bakerloo trains running between Queens Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on Saturday or Sunday. There's also no Lioness line between Euston and Watford Junction (more on that below) so you'll need to you Southern services – which run on Saturday only – or London North Western Railway, which will be available both days. There will also be a replacement bus that you can use. Piccadilly line Between 12.30am and 6am on Saturday, you won't be able to get the Piccadilly line between King's Cross St Pancras and Cockfosters. There'll be a replacement bus running between Finsbury Park and Cockfosters instead. Then, from 6am on Saturday and for the rest of the weekend, there will be no Piccadilly services between Wood Green and Cockfosters. You can get the replacement bus PL5 instead. There'll also be no service between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge but you can hop on the Metropolitan line instead. DLR On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be no DLR service between Poplar and Beckton. A replacement bus will be running instead between Canary Wharf and Gallions Reach via Blackwall (for Poplar), East India, Canning Town, Royal Victoria, Custom House, Prince Regent, Royal Albert, Beckton Park, Cyprus and Beckton. Overground Lioness line The entire Lioness line (from Euston to Watford Junction) will be shut across the weekend. TfL recommends that you use local bus services for South Hampstead and Kilburn High Road, Southern services for Wembley Central, Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction (Saturday only) and London North Western Railway services for Euston, Harrow & Wealdstone, Bushey and Watford Junction. Replacement bus service 718 will also be running between Queen's Park and Watford Junction. Mildmay line You won't be able to catch a Mildmay train between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction on Sunday. Southern Railway services won't be running that day either, so you should use local buses. Suffragette line No Suffragette trains are running between Barking and Barking Riverside on Sunday. There will also be a reduced service between Gospel Oak and Barking, with trains only running every 20 minutes. Weaver line The whole of the Weaver line will be shut on on Sunday morning until 10.15am.
