MPs call for safety improvements to major road
A cross-party group of MPs are demanding urgent safety improvements to a major road The group represent constituencies along a stretch of the A34 in the south of England and have written to the government over concerns about dangerous slip roads, poor junction visibility and inadequate merge lanes. The joint letter is signed by Newbury MP Lee Dillon, Reading West and Mid Berkshire MP Olivia Bailey, Didcot and Wantage MP Olly Glover and North West Hampshire MP Kit Malthouse. The Department for Transport has been contacted for comment. Dillon said: "The A34 is a vital transport corridor, but too many of its junctions are outdated and dangerous." He said the slip roads on the junctions at Chieveley and Speen to access the A34 were "perilously short and offer little time or space for drivers to merge safely onto a fast-moving dual carriageway". "We are deeply concerned that without urgent intervention, these junctions will continue to be the site of serious, and preventable, collisions," he added. Glover said the road's condition was also a "growing issue" in Oxfordshire, while the "extremely short slip roads" at the Highclere and Wash Water junction were raised by Malthouse. Malthouse said the situation was "even more alarming" at Bullington Cross and echoed Dillon's concerns over the Speen junction. However, MP Olivia Bailey said she was "delighted" National Highways had been commissioned to undertake an assessment after making a case for it in parliament. She said improvements on the slip roads at East Ilsley and Beedon were "an important next step towards making the slip roads safer". The MPs are calling for the A34 to be prioritised in the Department for Transport's upcoming Road Investment Strategy (RIS3), alongside a full safety review. "We need a strategic, well-funded plan," said Dillon. "People's lives should not be at risk every time they access the national road network." Ferrari extends Fred Vasseur's contract as F1 team boss
Ferrari has renewed its contract with Formula 1 team boss Fred Vasseur, ending speculation about the Frenchman's future. Vasseur joined from Sauber ahead of the 2023 season replacing Mattia Binotto and implemented a raft of behind-the-scenes changes to return the Prancing Horse to the top of F1. Ferrari finished second in the 2024 constructors' championship but has since stagnated, with defending champions McLaren romping towards the 2025 crown. It led to speculation from Italian media that Vasseur would be leaving at the end of his original deal, which was set to expire this year, amid alleged interest from Ferrari's top management in Christian Horner. But Ferrari has now drawn a line under any future doubts by re-signing Vasseur on fresh terms in what is expected to be another multi-year deal. "I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me," Vasseur said. "This renewal is not just a confirmation - it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver. Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari "Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.' This news comes ahead of F1's vast regulation changes next year, which Ferrari will enter with Charles Leclerc and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as its drivers. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said: "Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing. "Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula 1."
