Dakota Johnson Delivers Damning Diagnosis On Hollywood's Risk-Aversion: 'It's All A Bit Of A Mess'
Dakota Johnson appeared on Hot Ones this week — and offered up a spicy take on risk-aversion in Hollywood.
The 50 Shades of Gray star, who is currently promoting A24's romantic drama Materialists, lamented groupthink and the flock to IP franchises during her appearance on the YouTube show.

Host Sean Evans asked if Johnson had a diagnosis for why Hollywood is 'so risk-adverse.' She replied: 'It's hard when creative decisions are made by committee and it's hard when creative decisions are made by people who don't even really watch movies or know anything about them, and that tends to be what's occurring a lot.'
She continued: 'When something does well, studios want to keep that going so they remake the same things, but humans don't want that. They want fresh, they want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things.'
Concluding her answer, Johnson shrugged her shoulders and sighed: 'So I don't know, I guess it's all just a bit of a mess right now, isn't it?'
Johnson is no stranger to franchises, having played Anastasia Steele in three 50 Shades films, based on E. L. James' bestselling novels. Johnson also recently appeared in the Spider-Man universe flop Madame Web.
The actress joked about the latter. Evans said he was 'no superhero' after a bite of one spicy wing made him watery-eyed. 'I'm also not a superhero,' Johnson said, before flashing the camera a knowing look, and adding: 'Tried. Failed.'
Materialists is an original movie from Celine Song, the woman behind Past Lives. Co-starring Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, it follows a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is getting candid about sharing her life on social media. The mom of two and former actress recently sat down for an interview with the "Aspire with Emma Grede" podcast, set for release Tuesday, and spoke about a video she shared that recently went viral. In a promotional clip shared on YouTube ahead of Tuesday's podcast episode, Meghan opens up about the video, which shows her dancing with her husband Prince Harry in the delivery room before the birth of their daughter, Princess Lilibet. "That wasn't yesterday," Meghan says in the promotional clip. "That was four years ago. So it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's a whole life -- a real, authentic, fun life that's happening behind the scenes." "I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms," she added. Earlier this month, Meghan shared several memories of Lilibet on her birthday, including the video of herself and Harry dancing to the viral song "The Baby Momma Dance" in the delivery room at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, ahead of Lilibet's birth. The video is among many personal moments Meghan has shared on her official Instagram account, @meghan, since launching the page in January. Gerber, 23 — the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber — has been quietly dating the Emmy-nominated actor, 32, and a source tells PEOPLE exclusively that things are 'going great.' 'Kaia and Lewis have been spending a lot of time together, and things feel easy and natural between them. Kaia's really into Lewis, and things are going great.' The families have already crossed paths and hit it off. 'Lewis has met Kaia's parents, and they really like him,' the source says. Pullman is the son of While You Were Sleeping star Bill Pullman and dancer Tamara Hurwitz and has been building an impressive acting résumé with roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Outer Range, Salem's Lot and Thunderbolts*. Kaia, meanwhile, has been continuing to grow her own career in both modeling and acting, most recently appearing in American Horror Story. 'Cindy and Rande have met Bill over the past years at social events, and they've gotten along really well,' says the source. 'Everyone says Kaia and Lewis have great chemistry, and she loves how grounded and genuine he is,' the source adds. According to the insider, the twosome met through mutual friends in their shared social circles. 'Lewis has a different vibe from some of Kaia's exes, and she really appreciates that,' the source says. 'He's very low-key, and she likes that he's not caught up in the spotlight. He just has this calm, down-to-earth energy, and she finds it really comforting.' Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors HBO Max, formerly known as Max, experienced droves of fans flocking to the streamer to watch the smash hit medical drama, "The Pitt." The series is led by Noah Wyle, who plays Dr. Michael Robinavich, the lead doctor in an emergency room center in a Pittsburgh hospital. More news: New 'King of the Hill' Revival Poster Gives First Look at Two Returning Characters The 15-episode season follows Dr. Robinavich and a cast of doctors, nurses, interns, and patients experiencing harrowing situations through one-hour blocks in a single working shift. The series' first season has a 95 percent critic approval rating, along with an 86 percent fan approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with plenty of the praise pointing to the performances, writing, and accuracy of an emergency room. According to Variety, the series' first 14 episodes garnered an average of 10 million viewers. This huge popularity led to the second season of the show being greenlit in February. Warrick Page/Max More news: Exclusive: TMNT Co-Creator Kevin Eastman Reflects on 40 Years of Turtle Power Now, "The Pitt" has received a major update regarding the second season. Also, according to Variety, the second season has begun filming in Los Angeles and is eyeing a release date for January 2026. Should the series remain on pace, the second season will come out a short year after the first. This is a huge turnaround for a hit show, as sometimes it can take multiple years for a follow-up season to release. It is also no surprise that HBO Max is putting a rush job on "The Pitt," considering the first season was such a smash success. The entire series is already predicted to be up for multiple Emmy nominations, with Wyle being pegged as a shoo-in to be nominated for Best Actor. What Could 'The Pitt' Season 2 be About? This section contains spoilers about "The Pitt" Season 1. There are many unanswered questions about the ending of the first season of "The Pitt." For starters, Dr. Robinavich experienced some massive panic attacks following the end of having to treat so many patients from Pitt Fest. With his psuedo son, Jake, seeing the death of his girlfriend and blaming the doctor, can the pair move forward? Also, beloved lead charge nurse Dana is still dealing with having been assaulted by a disgruntled patient. The biggest question for her is whether she actually plans to quit her position. Though Dana does what she must when loads of patients pour in from the active shooter situation, the feeling is that she will not come back to work. Fans might have to wait to find out if Dana truly quit, but the character might be too popular to not be involved in some grand way — even if she did stop being a nurse. Dr. Frank Langdon is also dealing with being labeled a drug addict, and his fallout with Dr. Robinavich is sure to be a big talking point in the next season. Either way, fans will not have to wait long to see the second season. For more streaming, head to Newsweek.
