Indians among hundreds arrested in UK's crackdown on two-wheeler riders suspected of working illegally
The UK authorities have arrested hundreds of people, including Indians, in a week-long crackdown on two-wheeler riders suspected of working illegally for delivery firms across the country.
The UK Home Office revealed this week that its Immigration Enforcement teams had conducted Operation Equalise recently as part of a 'nationwide intensification week of activity' targeting illegal working hotspots with a focus on the migrants working as delivery riders.
Between July 20 and 27, a total of 1,780 individuals were stopped, leading to 280 arrests of migrants and asylum seekers found working without the requisite paperwork, the Home Office said. During one such raid, officers arrested seven Indian nationals at Hillingdon in west London, with five of them detained for illegal work activity.

'Illegal working undermines our border security and we're cracking down hard on it. That's why we have intensified our enforcement activity right across the UK to crack down on those who think they can evade immigration and employment laws in the UK," said Dame Angela Eagle, UK Minister for Border Security and Asylum.
'This operation is just one example of our relentless efforts to bear down on organised immigration crime at every level in our communities," she said.
As a direct result of Operation Equalise, the Home Office said 53 individuals are now having their asylum support reviewed, which could result in their support being suspended or withdrawn.
The operation follows a warning issued by the Home Office last month that those in the food delivery business caught abusing the immigration system could face having their asylum support ceased, such as entitlement to accommodation or payments, and those caught working illegally facing removal from the UK.
The Home Office said its Immigration Enforcement teams will also receive a GBP 5 million funding boost to ramp up illegal working intensification activity even further.

Suspected terror operative detained in Dharmavaram
Dharmavaram: In a significant catch, the police in Dharmavaram town of Sri Sathya Sai district on Friday detained a man identified as Sheikh Noor Mohammad on suspicion of having links to Pakistan-based terror groups. The arrest comes close on the heels of authorities in Vizianagaram district foiling a terror plot by arresting a suspected sympathiser and his associate. According to Penukonda DSP Narasingappa, Noor, a cook at a local hotel in Kota Colony, was taken into custody for questioning following intelligence inputs. During a search of his residence subsequently, investigators reportedly seized 16 SIM cards and sent them for forensic examination. The authorities are analysing his social media accounts to uncover any connections to extremist groups. Police seized some 'radical literature' works also from Noor. Sources indicate that Noor is being interrogated about his links to previously arrested suspects and his potential role in supporting or facilitating extremist activities. The police are also examining his local contacts and financial transactions to determine the extent of his circles. 'He (Mohammed) only consumed content and got influenced but didn't execute any act or perhaps didn't get a chance. Training could have radicalised him...,' Dharmavaram in-charge sub-divisional police officer U Narsingappa told a news agency. According to the police, Noor is an Indian citizen and a native of Dharmavaram and his forefathers also belong to the same place, ruling out foreign origin concerns. Officials stated that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terror sleeper cells and prevent extremist activities in Andhra Pradesh. Further arrests have not been ruled out. Police have booked Sheikh Noor Mohammad under provisions relating to sedition and charged him under sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged ties to terror outfits. Preliminary investigations revealed that Noor was an active member of numerous WhatsApp and Facebook groups associated with terrorist organisations, including Jaish-e-Mohammed. He is accused of posting on his social media handles provocative messages intended to radicalise and lure youth into extremist activities. Authorities confirmed that Noor's actions posed a serious threat to national security. He was to be produced before the Kadiri court later on Saturday. Further investigations are underway to trace Noor's network and determine the full extent of his involvement with terror groups.

Sikh family attacked in MP's Bhind, protesters seek action against cops
A non-resident Indian (NRI) family from the United Kingdom was pelted with stones following a dispute with police in Bhind in Madhya Pradesh, leaving two children injured and their car damaged, an official said on Saturday. The incident took place on Thursday on the Station Road near Fatehpur village in Gohad tehsil, following which the Sikh community, to which the family belongs, held protests, including near the Gohad Chauraha police station, seeking stringent action against those involved. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai joins the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, says he will ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. The protesters, who wanted an FIR against constable Kuldeep Kushwaha and transfer of the station house officer, called off the stir after superintendent of police Asit Yadav assured them of strict action following a fair probe, local Sikh community leader Karan Singh said. Kushwaha was sent to police lines, SP Yadav said while denying that the constable was taken off field duty on Friday after the NRI family contacted embassy authorities in Delhi. 'The two children sustained only bruises. The constable was not directly involved in the incident. First, we will register an FIR against unidentified people who indulged in the act. Action will be taken on the basis of further investigation. This is a rash and negligent act. They threw stones to stop the vehicle, which resulted in its windows getting damaged, as well as injuries to those inside,' the SP said. 'The attackers are being identified. It was not an attack. It was a miscommunication between the two (NRI and policeman). Both had a heated argument. The two sides did not know each other. I have spoken to the NRI family,' the SP added. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai, who joined the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, said he would ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. 'Dr Vikramjeet Singh, his wife Rajveer Kaur, daughter Ravneet Kaur and son Rohanpreet Singh came to Fatehpur village on August 14. Fatehpur is Rajveer Kaur's native village. Kushwaha, dressed in civil clothes, argued with them while their car was parked on Station Road to buy fruits and sweets,' Desai said. 'Kushwaha recorded a video of the vehicle, to which Dr Singh objected. Kushwaha threatened Dr Singh, who, possibly out of fear, tried to speed away. His vehicle was stopped by unidentified persons and his family attacked with sticks and stones near a dhaba. The children were injured and the vehicles windows were damaged,' Desai added.

Gurugram court allows ₹1.80-cr suit by man against wife over false dowry case
In a landmark order, a district court has admitted a ₹1.80 crore damages suit filed by a UK-based man against his former wife, who had earlier accused him in a false dowry case. Delivered on August 13, 2025, by civil judge (senior division) Manish Kumar, the ruling is being viewed as a significant relief for husbands entangled in prolonged litigation stemming from false matrimonial disputes. To be sure, the man was granted a divorce by a UK court in 2020. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The plaintiff, Gurusharam Lal Awasthi, had been acquitted of charges under Sections 498A (cruelty), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, first by a lower court in 2016 and later by a sessions court in 2018. Following his acquittal, Awasthi filed a civil suit against his ex-wife for malicious prosecution, citing financial losses and personal suffering during the 16-year long legal battle. To be sure, Awasthi was granted a divorce by a UK court in 2020. However, neither he nor his wife filed for recognition of the decree before Indian courts. Under Indian law, a foreign divorce is not automatically valid unless it satisfies strict conditions, such as both parties submitting to the jurisdiction of the foreign court and the divorce being granted on grounds recognised by Indian matrimonial law. In the absence of such recognition, the marriage continues to subsist in the eyes of Indian courts. The plaintiff's ex-wife opposed the suit on August 13, contending that it was not maintainable since an appeal against Awasthi's acquittal was still pending before the high counsel also argued that the mandatory court fee had not been deposited. However, rejecting these objections, the court held that the pendency of a revision petition does not nullify an acquittal and clarified that a tentative court fee is permissible in cases of unliquidated damages. 'The plaint prima facie discloses a cause of action for malicious prosecution,' judge Kumar observed, adding that the ex-wife's claims of the suit being 'false and concocted' could only be examined during trial. The matter has now been adjourned to November 20, 2025, for filing of a written statement. Speaking to HT, Awasthi recalled his ordeal, 'My marriage lasted only seven days, but I spent 40 days in jail and 16 years fighting cases. They demanded ₹1.20 crore to settle the matter, but I chose to fight. My passport was seized for three years; I couldn't work, I couldn't travel, and my family suffered immensely. I lost my father to the constant police harassment. No one can quantify the damage this caused to my dignity and life.' Women's rights activist and documentary filmmaker Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, who assisted Awasthi, welcomed the ruling. 'This judgement is worth applauding. It gives hope to thousands of men trapped in false dowry cases. Despite immense personal, financial, and emotional loss, this man continued his fight. His perseverance could pave the way for more men to seek justice through malicious prosecution cases,' she said. Legal experts said the order underscores judicial recognition of the misuse of dowry laws and may serve as a deterrent against frivolous complaints in matrimonial disputes. Adding perspective, Ambika Yadav, a senior lawyer at the Gurugram district court, said the order could set an important precedent. 'For years, courts have been cautious in admitting civil suits for malicious prosecution in matrimonial disputes. By allowing this case to proceed despite a pending appeal, the court has clarified that acquittal is a valid ground for seeking damages. This is a strong message that misuse of criminal law cannot go unchecked, and it will open doors for similarly placed litigants.'
