Soccer-FIFPRO 'deeply concerned' over Indian league suspension, calls for swift resolution

The Star8 hours ago
(Reuters) -FIFPRO said on Tuesday it was "deeply concerned" by the growing uncertainty surrounding Indian professional soccer, urging swift action to resolve the indefinite suspension of the Indian Super League.
The ISL, India's top-flight soccer league, was put on hold last month, with stalled negotiations for a contract renewal with its commercial partners, Reliance-led Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), cited as the reason.
Talks to renew the 2010 agreement came to a halt after India's Supreme Court asked the All India Football Federation not to renew the deal with FSDL until it had issued an order over a separate case to implement a new constitution for the federation.
The situation worsened earlier this month when Bengaluru FC, the 2018-19 ISL champions, stopped paying the salaries of their first-team players and staff amid the league's uncertainty.
"The lack of clarity for players over the 2025-26 ISL season, arising from a dispute over the league's organisation and governance that has led to its indefinite suspension, is having a significant impact on their livelihoods, careers, and wellbeing," FIFPRO said in a statement.
"Players have been subjected to unilateral and unlawful suspensions of their employment contracts until further notice. These actions represent a direct breach of the players' labour rights and are causing significant distress."
Reuters has contacted the AIFF and ISL organisers for comment.
FIFPRO said it has been working closely with the Football Players' Association of India (FPAI) to address the players' concerns and has raised the matter with soccer's global governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.
The union of professional footballers further urged the AIFF, FSDL and club owners to collaborate with the FPAI to confirm the ISL schedule and provide a clear road map for the season to commence.
Additionally, it called on clubs to continue to meet all contractual obligations to players.

India plans to ban online games played with money, citing addiction risks

FILE PHOTO: The words "India online gaming regulations" are displayed in front of an Indian flag in this Illustration taken September 14, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India's government plans to ban online games played with money, a proposed bill showed on Tuesday, in what would be a heavy blow for an industry that has attracted billions of dollars of foreign investment. Citing psychological and financial harm it says can be caused by such games, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 says that no person "shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in" the offering of online money games and such services. The 13-page bill, which has not yet been made public but has been reviewed by Reuters, describes an online money game as one played by a user by depositing money in expectation of winning monetary and other enrichment. The Indian market for such gaming is set to be worth $3.6 billion by 2029, venture capital firm Lumikai says. Endorsements by top Indian cricketers and other marketing efforts have boosted appeal and investor interest of real money gaming apps such as the popular fantasy cricket games operated by startups Dream11 and Mobile Premier League. Dream11 commands a valuation of $8 billion while Mobile Premier League is valued at $2.5 billion, PitchBook data shows. The Indian government has long been concerned about how such games are addictive. India's IT ministry, which has drafted the bill, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. MPL and Dream11 declined to comment. In fantasy cricket games on Dream11, users create their teams by paying as little as 8 rupees (10 U.S. cents), with a total prize pool of 1.2 million Indian rupees ($14,000). The apps become more popular during the Indian Premier League season, one of the world's most popular cricket tournaments. The bill states that anyone who offers such money games could face a jail term of up to three years and a fine. "Such games often use manipulative design features, addictive algorithms ... while promoting compulsive behaviour leading to financial ruin," the bill said. Global footballers' union urges India to revive top league

NEW DELHI: The global footballers' union on Tuesday called on India to swiftly revive their top-tier competition, saying the "escalating uncertainty" was affecting the livelihoods of national players and staff. The fate of the Indian Super League (ISL), which is usually played between September and April, hangs by a thread, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) unable to come up with a revival plan so far. A rights agreement between the AIFF and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the company that runs the ISL, ends on December 8 and is yet to be renewed, leaving thousands of players and staff in danger of losing their jobs. FIFPRO Asia/Oceania – the international voice of professional footballers in the region – said it was deeply concerned by the uncertainty clouding the league. The situation was having a "significant impact" on the players' "livelihoods, careers, and wellbeing", it said in a statement. "Players have been subjected to unilateral and unlawful suspensions of their employment contracts until further notice," it added. FIFPRO Asia/Oceania pressed the AIFF, FSDL and club owners to "confirm the ISL season schedule and establish a clear road map for the season to commence." Talks to renew the 2010 agreement ended abruptly after India's Supreme Court asked the AIFF to hold the deal over a separate case involving a new constitution for the federation. The league has been paralysed by uncertainty since, affecting over 5,000 players, coaches, staff and other stakeholders. Together with the Football Players' Association of India (FPAI), FIFPRO has raised the matter with the world body – FIFA – and the Asian Football Confederation. Top club Mohun Bagan recently refused to release its players for India's training camp ahead of the CAFA Nations Cup starting this month, accusing the AIFF of "negligence" over player welfare. Three ISL clubs, including former champions Bengaluru FC, have stopped paying the salaries of players and staff, citing a lack of clarity over the future of the tournament.
