Three talking points ahead of Real Madrid vs Pachuca

Yahoo22-07-2025
If Xabi Alonso was hoping for a statement win from his men in his first game in charge as the Real Madrid manager, he could not have been more disappointed.
The new manager, after all, oversaw his team play out a terrible opening 45 minutes and scamper to a 1-1 draw.

Later tonight, they take to the field in their second game of the event in the United States and face off against Mexican side Pachuca who lost their first game in the competition to RB Salzburg earlier in the week.
Alonso has a lot to ponder ahead of kick-off, right from his starting lineup to the dynamics he wishes to impose.
What will be under the spotlight, needless to say, is whether the men in white show any tangible improvement from last time.
Madrid Universal brings you three talking points ahead of Real Madrid vs Pachuca.
A surprising re-match

Real Madrid facing Pachuca in the FIFA Club World Cup in itself is a pleasant surprise, especially considering the manner in which they met recently just towards the end of last year.
For two clubs to face each other once in a cross-continental event is rare enough, and the two teams managed to pull off a date with each other last December in the final of the Intercontinental Cup.
The event, in fact, was initially known as the Club World Cup until the idea for the current competition was envisaged last summer.
Having met in the 'former' Club World Cup a few months ago, the two teams are set to face off once again in the 'new' version of the competition and one is forced to wonder what a rare combination has struck that the Intercontinental Cup finalists have been drawn into the same group once more.

Contrary to popular expectation, the meeting between the two teams last year was fiercely fought and far from one-sided despite Real Madrid being overwhelming favourites.
The 3-0 scoreline may project a stroll in the park for Los Blancos on the night but the first half was tense and Real Madrid had few chances to boast of.
Tonight, they will look to replicate a similar result, although they will be aware this time of the threat the Mexican side can bring to the table.
Should Brahim Diaz start?

For his first game in charge as the Real Madrid manager, Alonso opted to deploy Rodrygo Goes as his right-winger, and the Brazilian returned with a crucial assist for the team.

Beyond that, however, he did not offer too much special, and Brahim Diaz replacing him past the hour mark saw significantly more threat created from the position.
Ahead of tonight's clash, the new manager faces a dilemma of whether he should persist with Rodrygo or give Brahim the start against Pachuca. After all, there is a real need for someone to step up on the flank.
Vinicius Jr. has looked off colour for a long time now, and Kylian Mbappe is set to miss out once more against the Mexican side. The player who starts on the right, thus, may well prove to be the most important cog in the final third.
Diaz has done enough in recent training sessions and his opportunity earlier this week to earn the manager's trust and reports earlier this week made it clear that the coach heavily counts on the Moroccan star in both the medium and the long term.

Tonight could be a big night for the winger who has been longing for a break at the club of his dreams for a long time now.
A must-win of sorts

In a competition with only three games for each team in the group stage, every result counts monumentally. Real Madrid may be the favourites to make it past the group stage but their draw against Al-Hilal did not earn them any favours.
Ahead of match-day 2, Los Blancos are on just one point after their unexpected draw with Al-Hilal and sit behind RB Salzburg who took down Pachuca with a 2-1 scoreline.

Two games remain in the group stage and tonight is the men in white's easiest game of the group stage.
Given that Salzburg could give Los Blancos a real tough time, taking all three points against Pachuca is absolutely crucial.
A win tonight will take the Merengues to four points, and put them in a good place to qualify. Should they drop even two points, they will sit on two points and could risk losing out on making it out of the group. A big test awaits.

Spurs condemn 'cowards' for racially abusing Tel

Tottenham have said they are "disgusted" by the racial abuse received by forward Mathys Tel following their defeat by Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup. The club, who lost 4-3 on penalties after letting slip a two-goal lead, said people who had sent abusive messages to Tel on social media were "nothing but cowards". Tel, 20, came on as a substitute in the 79th minute and was one of two Spurs players who failed to convert from the spot in the penalty shootout. "Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views," Tottenham said. "We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. "We stand with you, Mathys." More to follow. Liverpool agree fee for new centre-back

Liverpool have agreed a £26m fee with Parma for Italian defender Giovanni Leoni. The 18-year-old centre-back is set to become their sixth major summer signing and take their spending in this window past £300m. Leoni will begin a medical on Merseyside on Thursday and will discuss personal terms, which are not expected to be a problem after he made it clear his preference was to join Liverpool. The Italy Under-19 international had also attracted interest from Internazionale as well as other Premier League clubs and will go straight into Liverpool's squad, with any talk of a loan move ruled out. He will join Liverpool after they stepped up their attempts to find a replacement for Jarell Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League champions have also opened talks with Crystal Palace about England centre-back Marc Guehi. Their move for Leoni has no bearing on their interest in Guehi, with no sign so far they can agree a fee with Palace. Liverpool have had to use midfielders Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni and left-back Andy Robertson as centre-backs in pre-season after the sale of Quansah and when Joe Gomez was injured and Virgil van Dijk was ill. Head coach Arne Slot admitted after Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Palace that their defending was a concern, with nine goals conceded in their last four games. And their need for defensive reinforcements was also greater as Ibrahima Konate is in the last year of his contract. Now Leoni is set to join Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili, whose transfer from Valencia was arranged last year, among their summer signings.

What channel is the Bills game on? How to watch Buffalo Bills vs Chicago Bears

ORCHARD PARK - Now that James Cook is signed to a new contract extension, the Buffalo Bills star running back might get a few snaps Sunday night against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The drama surrounding Cook's hold in came to an end Wednesday, one day after he had returned to practice, when he signed his four-year contract extension that included a whopping $30 million in guaranteed money. After missing four practices and the preseason opener last Saturday against the Giants, Cook has fallen behind in season preparation. All of the starters who weren't injured played into the second quarter against New York, so while Cook will get work along with all the first-stringer players Friday when the teams conduct a joint practice at Halas Hall, he may see game action Sunday. When he spoke to reporters Tuesday morning, coach Sean McDermott had not decided on what the game-day lineup would look like. 'We'll see,' he said. 'I'm not there yet on it, I just want to get a big practice (Tuesday) to get through and then (Wednesday) and then as a staff we'll talk about it some more at that point in time.'
