Middle-class Canadians are getting a tax cut on Canada Day. Here's what to know

With a middle-class tax cut promised by Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal government coming into effect Tuesday, some Canadians in the lowest tax brackets may find extra cause to celebrate Canada Day. Article content While dropping the lowest marginal personal income tax rate from 15 to 14 per cent is expected to offer immediate relief to some, there are questions about how much people are actually saving and whether those who need it most are benefiting. Article content Article content Here's what you need to know about the tax cut. Article content Article content Since the change is being implemented in July, the full-year tax rate for 2025 is adjusted to 14.5 per cent, dropping to 14 in subsequent years. Those with a job or other income where tax is taken out automatically might notice slightly more money on the paystubs starting in July, while others won't realize the savings until they file their taxes in spring 2026. Article content The cut lowers the rate on the first $57,365 of taxable income, regardless of their income level, according to Finance Canada. Article content The department noted the majority of the tax relief would be felt by those in the bottom two tax brackets, with those earning $57,365 and under benefiting from 45 per cent and those making $114,750 or less getting a 41 per cent share in 2025. Article content Article content Article content The three highest brackets — $114,750 to $177,882; $177,882 to $253,414; and over $253,414 — pay 18, 10 and 20 per cent of the taxes and gain nine, three and two per cent, respectively, of the tax relief. Article content In early June, a ways and means motion introduced by Champagne in the House of Commons to have the changes take effect for Carney's promised Canada Day deadline was passed unanimously. The actual legislation will still require approval and adoption when the House resumes in September. Article content Because the tax cut is coming at the midway point of the year, the PBO analysis estimates an average savings of $90 this year, $190 in the following three years and $200 in 2029-30.

N.S. defends $1.3M affordable housing program that resulted in 60 leases

The Nova Scotia government is defending a $1.35-million housing program that resulted in 60 leases over roughly two years. A spokesperson with the Department of Growth and Development says the contract with the non-profit home-sharing platform Happipad was a success for the people who found a home. Initial results show the program wound up costing more than $22,000 per lease, prompting criticism from opposition parties who said the government has failed to help Nova Scotians find affordable homes. Department spokesperson Chrissy Matheson said in a statement that Happipad is one of many options the province has explored while it works to connect people with safe and affordable places to live. "The platform was successful in connecting people, some at risk of homelessness, with safe and affordable housing. For those 60 people who found a home through the platform, it has been a success," Matheson said. The purpose of Happipad is to bring together renters seeking affordable month-to-month accommodation with residents who have rooms to rent in their homes. When it launched the program in 2023, the government said there were about 130,000 vacant bedrooms in the province. Matheson said that while the department knows of 60 formal leases made through the service, data from Happipad suggests 400 people "possibly made connections" outside the platform. Over the course of the nearly two-year program, about 1,850 renters and 950 hosts signed up to use Happipad. Last week, Opposition NDP Leader Claudia Chender said the Happipad contract was "always more of a gimmick than a real solution" to Nova Scotia's housing crisis. Matheson said the provincial government remains "focused on delivering on our housing plan that represents a $1.7-billion investment that has cleared the path for over 50,000 units in under two years — with thousands more to come."
