Israeli military will call up 50,000 reservists as it plans new phase of war in Gaza

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli military official said on Wednesday that the country's top generals had approved plans to begin a new phase of operations in some of Gaza's most densely populated areas.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly, the official said that the military will be operating in parts of Gaza City where the Israeli military has not yet operated and where Hamas is still active.
The official said after receiving approval from military leaders, the plan would now progress toward the final approval stage.
It remains unclear when the operation will begin. The official said 50,000 reservists will be called up in the coming month, nearly doubling the number of active reservists to 120,000.

Trump calls on Federal Reserve official to resign after ally accuses her of mortgage fraud

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook to resign after a member of his administration accused Cook of committing mortgage fraud. Bill Pulte, director of the agency that oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, urged the Justice Department to investigate Cook, who was appointed to the Fed's governing board by former president Joe Biden in 2022. She was reappointed the following year to a term that lasts until 2038. Pulte alleged that Cook has claimed two homes as her principal residences -- one in Georgia, the other in Michigan -- to fraudulently obtain better mortgage lending terms. The allegation represents another front in the Trump administration's attack on the Fed, which has yet to cut its key interest rate as Trump has demanded. If Cook were to step down, then the White House could nominate a replacement. And Trump has said he would only appoint people who would support lower rates. The Federal Reserve declined to comment on the accusation. Trump has for months demanded that the Federal Reserve reduce the short-term interest rate it controls, which currently stands at about 4.3%. Trump says that a lower rate would reduce the government's borrowing costs on $37 trillion in debt and boost the housing market by reducing mortgage rates. Yet mortgage borrowing costs do not always follow the Fed's rate decisions. The Trump administration has made similar claims of mortgage fraud against Democrats that Trump has attacked, including California Sen. Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Pakistan, China and Afghanistan hold high-level meeting in Kabul to boost cooperation

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Top diplomats from Pakistan,China and Afghanistan committed their countries to stronger anti-terrorism cooperation during a meeting Wednesday in Kabul aimed at boosting political and economic partnership, Pakistan's foreign ministry said. The three sides also 'reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration in trade, transit, regional development, health, education, culture, and combating drug trafficking," according to a statement from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad. The parties also reaffirmed an earlier agreement to extend the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan, the statement added. It provided no further details on the meeting among Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and top Taliban officials, hosted by the Taliban government in Kabul. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor involves improving road and rail links between China's western Xinjiang region and Pakistan's Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea. Pakistan's authorities in recent weeks have said they hope the corridor will help attract more Chinese investment to revive its ailing economy, and that they are hopeful that extending it to Afghanistan will boost trade with Central Asia. The meeting came more than a month after Russia became the first country to formally recognize the Taliban's government in Afghanistan. While no country apart from Russian has offered formal recognition, the Taliban have engaged in high-level talks with many nations and established some diplomatic ties with countries including China and the United Arab Emirates. Afghanistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier had said that the meeting would include 'comprehensive discussions' on a wide range of issues, including political, economic and regional cooperation. The last round of the dialogue took place in May in Beijing.

Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski launches bid for lieutenant governor

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Democratic Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, who passed up a chance to run for the open governor's seat, announced Wednesday that she instead will go for the No. 2 slot in 2026. Godlewski is the first candidate from either party to announce for lieutenant governor, although others are considering getting in. The seat is open since the incumbent, Sarah Rodriguez, is running for governor. Godlewski, 43, was appointed by Gov. Tony Evers as secretary of state in March 2023 after the incumbent resigned less than three months into his term. Unlike in most states, the office does not run elections in Wisconsin and has almost no official duties. Godlewski previously served as state treasurer from 2019 to 2023, another office with almost no duties, and ran for U.S. Senate in 2022. She dropped out of the race to clear the way for then-Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes to win the nomination. Barnes lost in the general election and is now among those considering a run for governor. The winner of next year's Aug. 11 Democratic and Republican primary election for lieutenant governor will be paired with the winner of each party's primary for governor. They will then run as a ticket in the November election. Evers announced last month that he won't seek a third term as governor in the battleground state, creating an open race next year. Rodriguez, the current lieutenant governor, announced her candidacy for governor last month. Other high profile Democrats considering a run include Attorney General Josh Kaul, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, state Sen. Kelda Roys and Barnes. Longshot candidate Ryan Strnad, who has worked as a beer vendor at Milwaukee Brewer games for nearly 40 years, launched his bid for governor last week. He argues that Wisconsin voters will embrace him as a symbol of the working class because he works two other jobs alongside his vendor gig. Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann and manufacturer Bill Berrien are the highest profile announced Republican candidates. But U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, a former state senator and close ally of President Donald Trump, is taking steps to run. Evers' decision not to seek reelection is having a domino effect on other constitutional offices. So far, the races for governor, lieutenant governor and now secretary of state will have no incumbent in 2026. If Kaul runs for governor, the attorney general's office would also be open.
