Disgraced Singer R. Kelly Gives Interview From Behind Bars

Yahoo08-03-2025

R. Kelly, who is serving a decadeslong prison term on charges related to sexual abuse, has given a rare public interview.
In a monitored phone call on Sunday with the podcast 'Inmate Tea with A&P,' the disgraced R&B singer claimed that he 'has written over 25 albums' since his incarceration began.
Kelly began the interview, in which he expressed no contrition for his crimes, with an a capella rendition of his 1998 song 'When a Woman's Fed Up.'
He was sentenced to 30 years behind bars in 2022 for racketeering and transporting minors across state lines for sexual activity.
Later that year, he was convicted of multiple child pornography and sex abuse charges. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on those charges, but was told he could serve all but one year concurrently with his prior 30-year sentence.
In a documentary that aired last year, Kelly's daughter, Buku Abi, accused the artist of sexually abusing her during her childhood.
'I just remember waking up to him touching me,' Abi, born Joann Kelly, said in the two-part series, 'R. Kelly's Karma: A Daughter's Journey.' 'And I didn't know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep.'
The singer's lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, dismissed the allegations made by his daughter.
During his interview with the podcast, the convicted sex criminal said that 'singing is a beautiful disease that's incurable.'
Kelly, 58, continued by saying he is 'working on getting out and getting back to getting back to what it is God' gave him his talents for. He added that he is 'using patience as a tactic.'
Before Kelly's first sentencing in 2022, victim witnesses Angela, Addie, Lizzette Martinez, Stephanie, Kitti Jones, Faith Rodgers and Sonja stepped up to the court podium to share their statements.
Angela, who witnessed Kelly assault R&B singer Aaliyah and was also a victim of sexual assault herself in the early '90s, addressed her statement to Kelly directly.
'We are no longer the preyed upon individuals that we once were,' she read aloud. 'I am a representation of every woman, boy, child, man that you have ever afflicted with your deplorable, despicable acts. And with that I leave you with yourself, Robert Sylvester Kelly.'
Last month, the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan denied Kelly's attempt to appeal his sex trafficking and racketeering charges, the Associated Press reported. Given his age, this ruling could result in him remaining incarcerated until his 80s if he serves the entirety of his sentence.

R-Truth's shocking WWE return was bold stroke in otherwise safely played Money in the Bank

Did WWE work all of us or pivot after the backlash regarding R-Truth's contract status? That's the question left after Truth came out of the crowd in a black hoodie to keep former childhood hero John Cena from cheating to win the main event of Money in the Bank at the Intuit Dome on Saturday night. It came six days after Truth posted to X that he had been released from WWE and his contract was not going to be renewed. It brought a wave of touching tributes from his peers and chants of 'We want Truth!' at each of WWE's shows this past week. Triple H, during the media scrum, called his return 'all part of the show.'

Mystery intruder pummels John Cena at WWE Money in the Bank event

Never say never in WWE. Things change rapidly ... within the same week. The sports entertainment juggernaut had its Money in the Bank show in Los Angeles on Saturday. The main event was a tag-team match that had John Cena and Logan Paul against Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso. Somehow, Cena and Rhodes wound up in the ring late in the match and the heel Cena hit Rhodes with his title belt -- again. Cena was ready to finish Rhodes with a pin and earn a victory when a mystery man in a black hoodie and facemask entered the ring. The allegedly unwelcome guest proceed to pummel Cena. Once he had the champ down, he decided to reveal his identity. First the hood came off. Then the mask. Who was it? None other than Ron Killings, R-Truth. The audience went wild. Why? Because earlier in the week it was announced that the uber-popular Killings was not having his contract renewed. This despite him being in a major storyline with Cena. Social media revolted and the WWE played along wishing Killings well. But if anyone knows professional wrestling, the window or door has to always be left open a crack because "working" the audience is an art WWE knows better than anyone.

Trump attends UFC championship fight in New Jersey, taking a break from Musk feud for cage fights

Associated Press NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump walked out to a thunderous standing ovation just ahead of the start of the UFC pay-per-view card at the Prudential Center on Saturday night, putting his public feud with tech billionaire Elon Musk on hold to instead watch the fierce battles inside the cage. Trump was accompanied by UFC President Dana White and the pair headed to their cageside seats for UFC 316 to Kid Rock's 'American Bad Ass.' Trump and White did the same for UFC's card last November at Madison Square Garden, only then they were joined by Musk. Trump shook hands with fans and supporters — a heavyweight lineup that included retired boxing great Mike Tyson — on his way to the cage. Trump was joined by his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, along with son Eric Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump shook hands with the UFC broadcast team that included Joe Rogan. Rogan hosted Trump on his podcast for hours in the final stages of the campaign last year. UFC fans went wild for Trump and held mobile devices in their outstretched arms to snap pictures of him. Trump is a longtime UFC enthusiast and frequent attendee of major fights. Trump arrived in time for the start of a card set to include two championship fights. Julianna Pena and Merab Dvalishvili were scheduled to each defend their 135-pound championships. UFC fighter Kevin Holland choked out Vicente Luque to win the first fight with Trump in the building. He scaled the cage and shook hands with Trump. He briefly chatted with Trump and White before he returned for his post-fight interview. Trump has been close to White for more than two decades. White hosted a 2001 UFC battle at Trump Taj Mahal, a former casino-hotel in Atlantic City, and Trump has frequently attended UFC matches since — including during his 2024 campaign. Trump has turned up at fights recently with famous entourages, including White, musician Kid Rock and former Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson. Trump and White's alliance has yielded dividends for both parties. White stumped for Trump at Republican conventions while men who soak up fight nights threw their support behind Trump in the elections. ___ AP sports:
