Cumberland County Animal Services: $10 custom pet portraits fundraiser
Cumberland County Animal Services' 'Poorly Drawn Pets' fundraiser gives you a custom pet portrait for $10 while helping animals in need!
Dogs are constantly making their humans smile, but an animal shelter in North Carolina figured out just how happy pet owners get when they're getting a poorly drawn photo of their dog.
The Cumberland County Animal Services in North Carolina raised over $2,000 by selling poorly drawn photos of people's pets, according to its Facebook post.
Every year, before kitten season starts in spring, the shelter holds a "Poorly Drawn Pets Fundraiser," Anna Hill, the rescue's foster coordinator, told USA TODAY. People can pay $10, and volunteers and employees from the shelter will send them a sketch of their pets.
But results may vary. Those willing to gamble $10 can get works of art inspired by their pups or a very cute scribble.
Volunteers and staff are "a hidden Picasso (an actual artist), orrrrrr you might get something that looks like the work of a chicken (but we'll give it our best shot)," the shelter said in their post on Facebook.
Adopting or own a senior dog? Here's how to help them live a long life
What is the fundraiser for?
The fundraiser helps the shelter collect money for its medical fund, according to its Facebook page.
The fund helps treat animals' injuries, covers life-saving procedures or critical care,
"We get several dogs who come in injured, whether it's a broken leg or we see a lot of animals that are hit by cars," Hill said.
It's more obvious that animals with severe injuries will have their care covered by the medical fund, but that money also goes to looking up microchips in dogs that could help the shelter reunite them with their owners.
"That care can be extremely expensive," said Hill. "Especially recently, it has skyrocketed."
In the past, their medical fund has helped dogs, like Geneva, who is currently in foster care, according to Hill. The dog was hit by a car, and her hip was dislocated.
The shelter's medical fund covered the surgery she needed to fix her leg, and she is now available for adoption.
The shelter's favorite drawings
One of Hill's favorite drawings was one made for a woman who said she purchased a portrait of her 16-year-old pug that recently passed away.
The shelter made sure to assign the portrait to a staff member who was a "fairly good artist," she said.
Another favorite, which was funnier that it was good, was one of a "little scruffy dog."
"It kind of looks like a gremlin," said Hill.
How to get a portrait of my animal
The shelter creates portraits of any animal, not just cats and dogs.
Hill, who runs a small hobby farm with around 25 animals on it, got a portrait of her alpaca during a previous fundraiser.
Unfortunately, the shelter's fundraiser has ended for this year.
But there's hope for 2026 if you want to get a portrait. At the beginning of each year, people can send in photos of their pets and get the best (or maybe worse) portrait of their best friends to cherish forever.

See Pixar's 'Elio' triumph over camp bullies in exclusive deleted scene

The world has been robbed of an epic scene where Pixar's 11-year-old 'Elio' goes full beast mode at Camp Carver − dodging pine-cone projectiles and pounding pickle juice. Until now. The scene, called "Carver Legend," appears here and in the Aug. 19 digital release of "Elio." The full animated scene, deleted before the film's theatrical release, features the clone of young hero Elio Solis (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) flying through a grueling obstacle course. "The scene is very moody and rich, the animation is hilarious," says Madeline Sharafian, who directed "Elio" with Domee Shi and Adrian Molina, when introducing the clip. "It's just a really awesome, energetic scene to watch." Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox What is 'Elio' about? "Elio" follows an extraterrestrial-obsessed orphan who is mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador after being beamed into an alien realm called the Communiverse. As Elio navigates intergalactic diplomacy and befriends aliens such the decapod-like Glordon (Remy Edgerly), he confronts a looming cosmic crisis brought on by Glordon's aggressive father Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett). What's in the deleted 'Elio' scene? While abducted Elio is exploring the galaxy, the Communiverse sends a clone to stand in for the young earthling. In an early version the movie, Elio is at sleepaway camp when he's alien-napped, so Clone Elio took his place at Camp Carver. Bullies subject the "new kid" Elio to the Camp Carver newbie tradition of running the insidious gauntlet. To everyone's shock, Clone Elio sails through the challenges using his alien power. He chugs a family-size jar of pickle juice and flies through a ropes course as campers throw the sharpest pine cones at him. When one camper shoots a boxing glove-tipped arrow, Clone Elio snares the weapon and uses it to scare off the waiting gladiator − the gauntlet's final challenge. The entire group chants the name of the triumphant Elio and Clone Elio accepts the applause. Why was 'Carver Legend' cut from Elio? However great the scene, the "Elio" story changed during production. The filmmakers decided to have Elio at home with his guardian, Aunt Olga (voiced by Zoe Saldaña), "to focus on their relationship," according to producer Mary Alice Drumm. "It felt stronger to have Clone Elio try to impress Olga with good behavior, but to have Olga realize there was something off," Drumm tells USA TODAY. "This wasn't the nephew she loved and knew so well." When is the 'Elio' digital release? Disney and Pixar's "Elio" will be released Tuesday, Aug. 19, on digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. The film is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on Sept. 9.

Ian McKellen reveals major 'Lord of the Rings' heroes returning in 'Hunt for Gollum'

Ian McKellen is letting the "Lord of the Rings" secrets slip. The actor, 86, gave a major update about the next "Lord of the Rings" film, "The Hunt for Gollum," during an appearance at the For the Love of Fantasy convention in London on Sunday, Aug. 17. According to McKellen, his character, Gandalf, and Frodo Baggins, the character played by Elijah Wood in prior "Lord of the Rings" films, will both be in the new movie. "I'll tell you two secrets about the casting: There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's another character called Gandalf," he said, according to a video of the appearance shared on X. "Apart from that, my lips are sealed." McKellen also said the movie will begin shooting in May. USA TODAY has reached out to Warner Bros. Pictures for comment. Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the previous "Lord of the Rings" movies, is set to direct "The Hunt for Gollum," with the franchise's longtime director Peter Jackson returning as a producer. This will be the first new live-action "Lord of the Rings" film since 2014's "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," as well as the first not to be directed by Jackson. "The Hunt for Gollum" will also mark the series' live-action return to the big screen amid Prime Video's ongoing streaming show "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." An animated prequel movie, "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim," was released in December. McKellen previously told The Sunday Times in June 2024 that he heard Gandalf is in "The Hunt for Gollum," and joked that he would play the character again "if I'm alive." After starring as the famed wizard in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, McKellen reprised the role in three "Hobbit" prequel movies, released from 2012 to 2014. It was not immediately clear how Frodo would be involved in "The Hunt for Gollum," but Wood has previously expressed interest in returning. "It would be pretty incredible," he told JoBlo in August 2024. "I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals within the context of that world would be ... jumping back into a world that's so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome." 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum' release date "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" is set to hit theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
