Prosus' India strategy: Mix of investments & acquisitions

MUMBAI: Dutch technology investor Prosus will use a mix of investments and acquisitions to bolster its play in India, where it is seeking to build a portfolio worth $50 billion in the years to come, Group CEO Fabricio Bloisi, who took over the top job in July last year, said.
The firm's approach will not be like that of a venture capital (VC) investor looking to close a series of deals at a faster clip. The strategy will rather be to build an ecosystem by investing in or acquiring companies within its core sectors, which can potentially open up opportunities for cross-selling among its portfolio firms and unlock faster growth for the broader portfolio.
India, where Prosus will be allocating most of its resources alongside Europe and Latin America, is a market with a lot of potential, Bloisi said, adding that the company will be investing billions in India in the next few years.
"We want to be less of an investor that has a pipeline of 100 companies with 5% (stake) in each one and more of an ecosystem that develops synergies between our own companies... We intend to invest more money in more companies.
I will be disappointed if it's not a few billion," Bloisi told TOI in an interview.
Prosus has invested $8.6 billion in India so far and has backed a clutch of startups, including Meesho, Swiggy, Urban Company, and Rapido.

It also had a few failed bets like Byju's, which Bloisi said was the "worst problem" the company faced globally. However, the downfall of India's biggest edtech startup, once valued at $22 billion, did not change its investment perspective on the country. "Making wrong bets and correcting is a part of life.
We lost a lot of money in Byju's, but we made much more money than we lost. Swiggy IPO was successful, and companies like Meesho and Swiggy have a lot of growth ahead...
The $50 billion would be five or seven companies together, and probably four or five of these seven are already in our portfolio and will keep growing to get there," Bloisi said.
Prosus will continue to prioritise investments in its core areas of food delivery, payments, e-commerce, experience (including services provided by firms like Urban Company), and AI. Bloisi, however, said that options in other sectors will not be closed, and it will be open to scouting for opportunities in emerging sectors such as clean tech and EV, although the company is unlikely to go big on these sectors as of now.
Within AI, where Bloisi said India can do more, the company's strategy will be to back companies that are using AI to build their services, offer more use cases to consumers, and incorporate AI tools to make systems more efficient rather than betting on firms developing pure-play AI models. Meesho, for instance, he said, was able to reduce its costs by using AI, besides adding more languages to its app, enabling it to reach more consumers.
"Most of the successful companies of the future are being built today on top of the (AI infrastructure) models. They (models) are just the first step... there's so much value to build, for example, marketing or video companies that are going to use AI models to offer services, and these are the type of companies we expect to invest in," Bloisi said, voicing the need for calibrated regulation.
Regulating a sector like AI, which is still nascent and evolving, will slow innovation. "There will be so much change in AI, and it's not a local thing. It's a global play. There are Indian, American, Brazilian models. I am not supportive of AI regulation," Bloisi said.
Prosus expects five companies from its India portfolio to go public this year, but Bloisi declined to name them. Urban Company and BlueStone have already filed draft IPO papers with Sebi, while some, like Meesho, are preparing to list.

In 2019, mushrooms briefly turned Arpit Dhupar's life upside down—just when he had hoped to earn from them. 'I had quit as Chief Technology Officer at Chakra Innovation and invested around Rs 7–8 lakhs in an oyster mushroom farm, because mushrooms were then the rage. Everyone in South Delhi was buying them,' he recalls. His plan: rent a house in West Delhi, grow oyster mushrooms, and sell them at INA Market. But fungal contamination—green and black mould—ruined the idea. 'And so, I decided to cultivate a genetically superior mushroom strain that wouldn't get contaminated,' says the mechanical engineer. He found lab space at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology in Faridabad and started to research the fungus. 'I realised that eating mushrooms was underutilising their potential... Then I came across biofabrication and knew that was what I really wanted to do.' He began cultivating mycelium—the root system of mushrooms— on paddy straw waste to create a biomaterial thatpossessed all the properties of expanded polystyrene foam, but with an additional one, compostability. Put simply, he developed a sustainable alternative to thermocol. Today, Dharaksha Ecosolutions, which Dhupar co-founded, supplies mycelium-and-crop stubble packaging to companies like Dabur and Havells. 'When we started, we processed 100 kg of feedstock in 3–4 months,' he says. 'We now process 100 kg a day.' Dhupar is part of a growing group of material science entrepreneurs replacing single-use plastics (SUPs) with sustainable bio-based alternatives. SUPs—carry bags, food containers, ecommerce packaging—are high-volume, low-recyclability products with significant environmental and climate impacts. Packaging alone accounts for 56% of India's plastic consumption, with 95% discarded after short use, according to Saahas, a waste management nonprofit. And packaging is what new companies are focusing on. Derived from organic matter such as mushrooms, crop stubble, and seaweed, these alternative materials are making small but keen inroads into the Indian market, with plans to go deep and wide. To Market, To Market On May 28—International Burger Day—Swiggy cus-tomers in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi noticed something unusual on their burger boxes: a label reading 'coated with seaweed'. The algae wasn't on the food—it was part of the box, made by Zerocircle, a Pune-based startup that partnered with Swiggy to launch its sustainable food packaging. Founded in 2020, Zerocircle makes seaweed-based films, pellets, and coatings that render paper packaging grease- and leak-proof. Their products are also 'microplastics-free, home-compostable, and ocean-degradable'. Founder Neha Jain credits growing consumer awareness. 'The success with the Swiggy partnership is largely because consumers are constantlytalking about microplastics in food... That is why we have come this far without subsidies or big pushes from govt, brands, or manufacturers,' she says. Venture capital, grants and awards have played a key role. Zerocircle raised Rs 20 crore this year; Dharaksha, Rs 24.8 crore in 2024; and Faridabad-based Ukhi, Rs 7.7 crore last year. Ukhi converts rice husk, hemp, nettle stems, and pine needles into EcoGran, a compostable, biodegradable biopolymer for flexible packaging—used in garbage bags, e-commerce mailers, and shrink wrap. 'Flexible packaging accounts for a quarter of the 200 million tons of single-use plastics produced globally,' says Vishal Vivek, CEO and co-founder of Ukhi.'In six years, we've worked with over 100 farmers. But we need many more—our new facility will require 500 tons of agriwaste a year.' How To Scale Sixty per cent of Ukhi's clients—including Ralph Lauren—are international. For Zerocircle, it's 90%. That's partly due to global market maturity and partly to cost. 'Globally, we are 50% cheaper than other natural polymers companies,' says Jain. In India, sustainable packaging alternatives remain niche—awareness is low and costs can be 3–5 times higher than SUPs. 'Alternative materials are inherently costlier than their crude-based counterparts because the fossil fuel industry has been around for over a hundred years and has been optimised and scaled significantly,' explains Dhupar. 'Once we scale, have 10–20 large customers, and industry bodies issue stricter mandates to use alternative materials, things will start to accelerate,' he adds. In 2021, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched the India Plastics Pact, a platform to helpbusinesses make the transition to a circular economy for plastic packaging. The first of its four targets is to redesign and innovate for problematic plastic packaging. However, a CII spokesperson notes that while alternatives are key for certain applications, they won't solve all industrial packaging needs. Sarkari Support Founders agree that while direct govt support for alternative materials has been limited, plastic regulations have helped indirectly. In July 2022, the govt banned 19 low-utility, highlitter SUP items like plastic straws and carry bags thinner than 120 microns. Though the broader policy still focuses on reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic, these bans are nudging consumers toward alternatives. 'It will take time but gradually bioplastics like ours will become one of the substitutes to plastics,' says Vivek. 'They may never replace everything plastic, but they will replace a larger share of what's now in the market. ' Another key policy may help lower costs. The revised Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mandate requires a minimum amount of recycled plastic in packaging from April 1, 2025. 'This is going to be a major lever, because EPR has been a significant promoter of alternative materials in the West,' says Dhupar. 'We can't compete on price, so there has to be a value proposition. EPR makes that stronger. If recycled plastic adds 10–15% to brandcosts, they might as well invest 20–25% in safer, more sustainable materials that offer a better marketing story. That's what will bridge the gap.' Need Of The Hour Not everyone can make the switch at once. 'Street vendors, small shops, and others in the informal economy don't have the leverage to buy alternatives to single-use items. It's therefore a question of the economic viability of these alternatives,' says Swati Sambyal, Senior Circular Economy Expert at GRID-Arendal. 'Will Rs 100, that can buy say 400 or 500 plastic carry bags, buy the equivalent number of sustainable alternatives? Therefore, the social, economic and environmental viability of alternatives of SUPs have to be looked at together. We must make alternatives cheaper and develop mechanisms to make it happen.' But cost isn't the only challenge. 'We also need clear enforceable standards for alternatives and investment in waste infrastructure that can handle these new waste streams,' Sambyal adds. She points out that alternative materials should besorted separately from dry and wet waste, as they can contaminate recycling streams. For example, if recyclers misidentify mycelium-based packaging and send it for dry waste processing, it could compromise the quality of recycled granules. Labelling is also essential. The alternatives market includes diverse materials with different chemical makeup, and the 'bio' label can be misleading. 'For instance, you may start out with agriculturally produced biomass, like bagasse or corn, and polymerise it with synthetic compounds for additional properties like elasticity or strength. But when it breaks down, it will leave those synthetic chemicals behind,' says Jain. 'Just because it comes from a plant source doesn't make it better.' The same goes for biodegradability and compostability. 'Biodegradable does not mean degradation like a vegetable,' she continues. 'The product doesn't disappear but only breaks down into smaller fragments. In the same way, compostable plastics, such as bin liners, can only be industrially composted, which means 60 degrees of heat and industrial infrastructure. So, the first thing we need to do is identify standards that differentiate different materials and their end-of-life based on the infrastructure that exists. ' Startups are working to build awareness but often must begin at the most basic level. 'People start the conversation with, 'Is your solution green?',' says Jain, 'And I'm like, 'Okay, we have to really break this down'.' Dishing out compostable crockery to the world When Vinay Balakrishnan launched his edible wheat bran plates in 2021, it was Europe that showed interest. 'Indian consumers want aesthetics, not sustainability,' says the Coimbatore-basedentrepreneur. Today, his brand Thooshan exports crop-based crockery to seven countries, though the business has been running at a loss. This year, he hopes to break even, thanks to orders from Switzerland and Mexico. 'Last year, it took the Swiss six months to clear the streets of discarded Christmas trees when the season ended,' he says. This year, Thooshan was tasked with turning that waste into biodegradable tableware. In Mexico, he is turning Agave tequilana—the tequila plant—into cutlery. 'They export tequila but are left with tonnes of cactus waste.' I've had my eye on all kinds of agri-waste,' says Balakrishnan. 'Corn and wheat from the US, rice husk from Argentina, date seeds from the UAE, and oil cake waste from canola and mustard in Canada. India remains the fastest-growing major economy, with growth supported by favourable demographics, ongoing structural reforms, low inflation, and targeted fiscal incentives, Chairman of Tata Steel N Chandrasekaran said in a letter to shareholders. 'A combination of rate cuts, higher capital expenditure, and tax benefits is expected to drive private investment and discretionary consumption,' he said, adding that India is poised to lead global steel consumption by 2026. Chandra said global steel output in FY2024-25 was stable at 1.83 billion tonnes, but despite this, margins remained under pressure due to supply chain volatility, although coking coal prices were lower. India's steel sector outperformed global peers, with crude steel output rising 4.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis and steel consumption surging 10.2 per cent year-on-year. The growth was driven by construction, urbanisation, and industrial activity, he said. In India, the company ran operations at near full capacity utilisation across sites, with highest-ever crude steel production of 21.7 million tonnes and deliveries of 20.9 million tonnes. The company commissioned India's largest blast furnace (5 MTPA) at Kalinganagar — part of the ₹27,000 crore Phase II expansion — while Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) delivered strong performance with ₹1,000 crore EBITDA and generated positive free cash flow, Chandrasekaran said. In Europe, Tata Steel is advancing a major transition to low-emission steelmaking. In the UK, two blast furnaces at Port Talbot have been decommissioned to make way for a next-generation electric arc furnace (EAF) backed by £500 million in UK government funding. Construction begins in July this year, with fixed costs targeted to decline from £762 million to £540 million in FY2025-26. In the Netherlands, the company ran at near-rated capacity while progressing on a decarbonisation roadmap. Tata Steel Nederland is finalising a joint Letter of Intent with the Dutch government to support a shift to DRI-EAF-based steelmaking, with one blast furnace and one coke oven to be retired by 2030. A €500 million cost transformation plan is also underway. Tata Steel CEO & MD T.V. Narendran and ED & CFO Koushik Chatterjee reaffirmed focus on capex, efficiency, and sustainability as levers for future growth. On the deleveraging front, the company reduced net debt by ₹6,200 crore in H2 FY2024-25 to ₹82,579 crore. 'The company will stay the course in FY2025-26 by improving cash flows through cost take-out initiatives and operational efficiencies to bring down our debt level further,' the officials said.

Semiconductor chips are among the smallest and most detailed objects humans can manufacture. Shrinking the scale and upping the complexity is a fight against the limits of physics, and optical lithography—etching nanometre-scale patterns onto silicon with short-wavelength light—is its most extreme frontier. ASML , a Dutch firm that builds such lithography tools, takes an almost sci-fi approach by blasting molten tin droplets with lasers in a vacuum to produce extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light with a wavelength of just 13.5nm. Now, some researchers hope to generate more powerful EUV beams with a particle accelerator that propels electrons to nearly the speed of light. The need for this radical proposal stems from a fundamental limitation of current EUV sources: they struggle to generate enough power to reliably etch circuits onto silicon. In a lithography tool such as ASML's, the EUV beam bounces off nearly a dozen mirrors before it hits the silicon. EUV light is so easily absorbed, though, that even in a vacuum-sealed chamber with ultra-specialised mirrors, each reflection saps 30% of the light's energy. By the time the photons reach the wafer, less than 2% of the original EUV energy remains. Without enough power, reliability and precision plummet. One way to boost energy is to bombard the wafer with multiple doses of EUV light, a trick that slows down the chip-manufacturing process. The other approach is to increase the power of the photons. ASML's latest rig uses a light source that operates at 500 watts, nearly twice the power of its previous machines. To speed up production or to shrink feature sizes even further, the light source must get stronger. ASML currently has a road map to develop a one kilowatt light source. A more radical solution is to use a free-electron laser (FEL), where electrons travelling near the speed of light are manipulated to emit EUV radiation. The FEL process begins with a powerful electron gun that injects a beam of the particles into a miniature racetrack. The electrons then pass through a linear accelerator, which propels them to nearly the speed of light. Once accelerated, they enter a roughly 200-metre-long structure called an undulator, where a series of magnets generate a field whose polarity flips periodically. This wiggles the electrons, causing them to emit a beam of EUV photons with a specific wavelength. Nicholas Kelez, the boss of xLight, a Silicon Valley startup developing FEL-based lithography, described the technology as a more powerful and tuneable 'new light bulb" that he believes can be swapped into existing optical lithography machines. xLight expects to deliver the first commercial system within four years. Another research group, at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organisation (KEK) in Japan, has already demonstrated the ability to generate light at 20 micrometres (millionths of a metre)—far longer than the 13.5nm wavelengths ASML is capable of but a step towards refining the process. Chinese researchers are also exploring FEL technology in their quest to develop an independent EUV machine. Generating light using a FEL has some advantages over using lasers. The first is power: a lithography machine based on a FEL-based light source can be around six times more energy-efficient than a laser-plasma tool. Dispensing with molten-tin droplets also reduces the risk of contamination. Tuning such a machine for smaller wavelengths is also, at least theoretically, much easier: all that needs doing is tweaking the settings on the electron gun and the undulator. It would also be cheaper. A single FEL system can be repurposed to provide light for multiple lithography machines, allowing its operator to distribute the fixed costs across multiple chip-etching tools. Nakamura Norio from KEK estimates that the construction cost is around half that of a laser-based EUV tool and the running costs are around a fifteenth. For now, all this is theoretical. Whereas ASML's EUV machines are proving themselves in high-volume manufacturing, FEL-based lithography is still in the experimental phase. But in the high-stakes world of chipmaking, any edge is worth chasing. Curious about the world?
