Uber driver, passenger escape armed carjackers after stopping for tree branch
Uber and Lyft stickers are seen on a ride share vehicle is seen at the Nashville International Airport, Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, in Nashville, Tenn. (AP Photo/George Walker IV) LANCASTER, Massachusetts -- An Uber driver was about to drop off his last passenger of the night when he pulled up on a tree branch laying across the road in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Esmelky Acevedo, 33, said he was driving down the tree lined Seven Bridges Road around 1 o'clock Thursday morning. Acevedo said he got out of his car to move the branch when two men suddenly jumped out of the woods and ran for his car. The passenger was still inside. 'I don't know if they wanted to rob us but what I can see is that they wanted the car so bad,' Acevedo told WBZ-TV. 'To be honest it went so fast I just reacted to the situation. I was there but it wasn't me. I could tell it was God taking control of the situation.' Man pointed gun at passenger Lancaster police said one of the two suspects jumped in the driver's seat, and the other ran to the back of the car to pull the Uber passenger out of the car. Acevedo said that man pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her cellphone and other belongings. In the meantime, Acevedo said he pulled the suspect out of the driver's seat. A struggle ensued but Acevedo said he was able to regain control of the car. In bit of quick thinking, Acevedo decided to put the car in drive. An attempt, he said, to distract the suspects so his passenger could run away. 'I kept moving, doing that same process, keep moving, keep moving, so that they could have a good distance between [the passenger] and the two guys,' he said. Acevedo said he then put the car in reverse and accelerated quickly to catch up to the passenger who jumped in the car. The pair called 911. Police say branch was a setup Lancaster police said the suspects used the branch as a setup. Investigators described the men as, 'Hispanic males of smaller stature.' Acevedo said police had possession of his car after he noticed fingerprints on the side of it. The Uber driver of four years said he's never had anything like this happen to him and was thankful his instincts kicked it. 'I did the best that I can to protect [the passenger] and to face the situation because I don't want to happen to anyone else.' Lancaster police said they are continuing to investigate but noted there was no ongoing threat to the public. By Brandon Truitt

Man who killed teen while racing on Highway 40 gets full parole
Montreal Crime By Despite showing signs he is having trouble adapting to life outside a federal penitentiary, a man who killed a 15-year-old girl while he was high and street racing along Highway 40 in the West Island has been granted full parole. In a decision made last week, the Parole Board of Canada granted Francis Lawrence, 31, full parole on the 54-month sentence he received at the Montreal courthouse on Feb. 1, 2024. He was granted the release despite how his employer reported that Lawrence did poorly and was fired from his workplace while he was out a day parole. According to a written summary of the decision, his case management team, the people who prepare an offender for a release, pointed out that 'some of your limitations (on the job) were due to the consequences of your head injury (suffered in the crash), which sometimes make it more difficult to perform certain tasks.' The decision also notes that Lawrence was married inside a federal penitentiary during September 2024 and that the relationship appears to be going well. According to the Crown's theory of the criminal case, on March 20, 2021, Lawrence's Audi was racing with a black Honda Civic just before it caused the crash that killed 15-year-old Veronica Gashi. The Sûreté du Québec's investigation revealed Lawrence was travelling between 160 and 200 kilometres per hour. The fatal crash occurred near the St-Charles Boulevard exit in Kirkland. The two passengers in Lawrence's Audi were seriously injured. Lawrence also suffered injuries that left him in a coma for a long time. Tests done after he arrived at a hospital revealed he was driving with twice the legal blood-alcohol limit. A few months later, he was charged with several counts related to the crash. On Feb. 13, 2023, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. 'The board believes that your discharge plan is realistic and tailored to your needs,' the parole board wrote in the decision made on Aug. 7. 'It will allow you to implement your active job search plan, which will constitute a protective factor both in terms of the self-esteem you will derive from it and the source of income that could result from it, although you are not experiencing significant financial difficulties at this time. 'Thus, taking into consideration your low risk of reoffending and the conformity you demonstrate regarding the supervision framework imposed on you to date, the board believes that the time is right for you to access a less restrictive form of freedom.'
