Selangor plans asset seizure for nafkah defaulters to protect rights
State Islamic Religious Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah highlighted additional proposals, including income withholding and garnishment orders, to enforce compliance.
Mohammad Fahmi stressed the importance of selecting the right enforcement mechanism to avoid delays and protect the rights of recipients, particularly ex-wives and children's guardians.
'Failure to choose the right channel can cause confusion and jeopardise the rights of the maintenance recipient,' he said during the State Assembly session.
The state is also exploring collaborations with agencies like the National Registration Department, Inland Revenue Board, and financial institutions to trace and seize defaulters' assets. The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), alongside legal experts, is reviewing amendments to the Islamic Family Law Enactment (Selangor State) 2003 to strengthen enforcement. - Bernama

Raid on factory uncovers ruse to deploy foreign workers beyond work permit
NIBONG TEBAL: The Immigration Department has exposed a tactic by agents who recruited foreign workers using permits for cleaning and construction services, but instead, deployed them as factory workers. This deception was exposed in a joint operation conducted at a factory in Simpang Ampat here today. Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said, during the operation, which began at 10.30am, 749 individuals were inspected. He said, out of these, 307 were found to have committed various offences under the Immigration Act. "Those arrested comprised 306 Bangladeshi nationals and one Nepali national aged between 20 and 40. "The offences include misuse of sector-specific permits, working in unauthorised locations, expired permits and lack of travel documents. "The most prevalent violation involved individuals holding work permits for the cleaning sector, but were found working in factories," he told newsmen after the raid here this afternoon. The operation was conducted in collaboration with multiple agencies, including the National Registration Department (NRD), Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). Zakaria said all those detained would be placed at the Jawi Immigration Detention Depot. One Bangladeshi worker detained in the operation claimed to have arrived in Malaysia in 2023 through an agent after paying approximately RM20,000 (about 300,000 taka). He said he was aware that his work permit was for a cleaner's job, but the agent told him that working in a factory was also considered cleaning work.

Sisters nabbed in Lahad Datu after shopping spree with lost debit card
KOTA KINABALU: What three sisters thought was a "paid" shopping spree turned into a costly lesson when they were arrested for misusing a lost debit card in Lahad Datu. The three women reportedly came across the misplaced card and used it for purchases in several malls around town. Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail said on Tuesday (Aug 5) that the owner of the card lodged a report after discovering that the card was missing. The issuing bank then found several transactions made using payWave, and this led to the arrest of the three women, he added. ACP Dzulbaharin said the women are being investigated for unauthorised access to computer material under the Computer Crimes Act 1997. In an unrelated case, two people were detained for providing false information in a MyKad application at the National Registration Department (NRD) in Sandakan on Monday (Aug 4). According to the Sandakan NRD, the first arrest involved a woman suspected of giving false information as the guarantor in an application. The second arrest involved an Indonesian man at the same premises for allegedly using another person's birth certificate as his own to apply for a Malaysian identity card. Targeted RON95 petrol subsidies to be announced by end-Sept 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) said the detailed implementation plans for targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol will be announced by end-September 2025, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement on July 23, 2025. In a written parliamentary reply, MoF said the government is actively developing and testing the subsidy targeting mechanism to ensure smooth execution upon rollout. 'This includes refining data from agencies such as the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM),' it said. 'The government aims to adopt a more comprehensive approach to ensure RON95 subsidies reach the intended target groups.' MoF was responding to a question from Hulu Langat Member of Parliament, Pakatan Harapan's Mohd Sany Hamzan, who asked for an update on the subsidy retargeting implementation, particularly the front-end and back-end phases announced by the Ministry of Economy. According to MoF, once implemented, the retargeted subsidy mechanism will allow eligible Malaysians to enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre through MyKad verification. Non-citizens and those ineligible for the subsidy will pay the unsubsidised market rate. - Bernama
