New I-16 westbound travel lane to open

Yahoo26-02-2025

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announces the opening of the new, third travel lane on I-16 westbound between Chatham Parkway and I-95, part of the 16@95 Improvement Projects.
One of the most highly anticipated components of the project is the widening of I-16 between I-95 and I-516 Interchanges, which will increase the existing general-purpose roadway from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. The new, I-16 westbound lane will be progressively opened to traffic beginning Wednesday, February 26,2025, through Friday, February 28, 2025, starting at the I-16/I-95 Interchange working eastward toward Chatham Parkway.
The traveling public should expect daily intermittent lane closures along this stretch of highway except during peak travel times between 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.The 16@95 Improvement Projects will improve traffic flow and enhance safety along I-16 and I-95, one of Georgia's busiest freight corridors as well as the gateway to Georgia's growing port in Savannah, by reconstructing the interchange at I-16 and I-95 in Chatham County to increase operational efficiency and safety of passenger cars and trucks and widening I-16 to relieve traffic congestion.Additionally, the projects will provide new lane miles expected to support approximately 100,000 vehicles in metro Savannah. The new lane miles will also help alleviate more than 30% of delays on I-16 from I-516 to I-95 by 2030 and provide enhanced mobility for first responders.
