Who's next for Jack Della Maddalena after beating Belal Muhammad?
MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn plays matchmaker and looks ahead to what makes sense for Jack Della Maddalena in this edition of "Sean Shelby's Shoes."
The next chapter of the storied welterweight division was written at UFC 315 when Jack Della Maddalena claimed the title from Belal Muhammad.
Previously unheralded Australian Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) proved he is top dog and put on a stellar performance over five rounds to win a unanimous decision over Muhammad (24-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) at Bell Centre in Montreal, etching his name in the history books among the greats to hold that 170-pound strap.
Although it took tremendous effort to get there, the work is now just starting for Della Maddalena. In the event he manages to beat Islam Makhachev in a seemingly looming-next matchup, there's a frightening queue of legit contenders who are eager to take that belt away from him.
What does the future hold for the new champ? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on Della Maddalena's future following UFC 315.

Israel Adesanya: Middleweight division 'in good hands' with Khamzat Chimaev as UFC champ

Israel Adesanya liked what he saw from the new UFC middleweight champion. On Saturday, the MMA world saw unbeaten boogeyman Khamzat Chimaev achieve what many thought was an inevitability – become UFC champion at 185 pounds. Chimaev dominated, and defeated Dricus Du Plessis by unanimous decision 50-44 across the board in the main event of UFC 319 in Chicago. Adesanya, once the titleholder of the weight class with five title defenses, watched Chimaev's masterful performance and had a lot of positive feedback. "Not what I expected, but I'm glad Khamzat fixed his cardio and improved his cardio to the point where he can go five rounds and just rag doll people," Adesanya said on his YouTube channel. "That's a mess. That's a mess to deal with. "I thought maybe DDP Round 4 will be able to stop the takedowns, and Khamzat will get tired, but he didn't even slow down. He slowed down DDP. He slowed him down, which is very impressive because that's why he finished me Round 4, because I thought, 'OK, I got him now.' But he just finds a way to get his third, fourth wind, but Khamzat made sure he didn't even get his first wind and just smothered him. Khamzat, new middleweight champion. The division is in good hands." Adesanya and Chimaev were at one point discussed by MMA fans as potential opponents, given Adesanya's then-status as champion and Chimaev being an interesting rising contender. However, the two never crossed paths. "The Last Stylebender" currently awaits a booking. He last fought against top contender Nassourdine Imavov in February, when he lost by second-round TKO. Adesanya is 0-3 in his last three fights, a run that saw him lose his belt to Sean Strickland, fail to re-gain the title from Du Plessis, and most recently the loss to Imavov.

Kamaru Usman dismisses short-notice talk in Khamzat Chimaev loss, gives UFC champ credit

Kamaru Usman was all class in addressing the criticism surrounding Khamzat Chimaev's close win over him. Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) dominated and outgrappled Dricus Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) to claim the middleweight title in Saturday's UFC 319 headliner at United Center in Chicago. Usman was one of the few fighters to pick Chimaev to win. So how good is Usman? That's a thought that emerged through many people's minds after the former welterweight champion pushed Chimaev to the brink on just days' notice in a majority decision loss at middleweight in October 2023. "Let's address this, the whole, 'Oh you took the fight on this days' notice.' Listen, at the end of the day, I know who I am as a fighter, and the way I approach this game, and so does Khamzat Chimaev," Usman said on his "Pound 4 Pound" podcast with Henry Cejudo. "At the end of the day, it was still a loss on my side and it was a win for Khamzat Chimaev. 'Oh, you should feel this way.' No, it was an 'L.' I don't feel any sort or type of way. "It was an 'L,' and there's a mutual respect there because each and every fight that we go into as fighters, you don't know what we're dealing with. You don't know what he was dealing with, you don't know what I was dealing with. It looked the way it did. Styles make fights. I'm a much different style than these guys are, and I say it all the time: You don't know until you get in there. Khamzat did his best that he could to get the win and he got that win. So let's give him that credit and let's move on." After losing to Chimaev, Usman (21-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) returned from an 20-month layoff to snap the winning streak of Joaquin Buckley in the UFC on ESPN 69 headliner in June.
