The unity of black people with their Colored counterparts and the return of land to rightful owners were some of the hot topics during a gathering of community-based organisations, including members of the Operation Dudula Movement, Black Entrepreneurs Alliance, and the Soweto Alliance. The dialogue was held at the Anchor Comprehensive School in Orlando West, Soweto, on Saturday.
uMkhonto weSizwe MP Zwelakhe Mthethwa, said that for poor black South Africans to regain their land, which was stolen through conquest and legislation, the unity of black people across all ethnic groups needs to be paramount.
"The only way we resolve the issue of land dispossession is for us as Black people to unite against those who have a problem with us, which is those who own the land that belongs to us. Those who have been bought must not disturb the process that should unfold of returning the land to its rightful owners. Our traditional leaders successfully reclaimed the land in 1994, but those leading us have failed to return the land to the people. The documents and all the proof are there," he stated.
Operation Dudula's Bhekani Thusi stated: "Now more than ever, we must meet and unite as South Africans to find a common goal to deal with the issue of land, immigration, and the economy because we have become spectators in our land. We have just come from a very progressive march in KZN."
Chief Xam Keith Duarte, who is part of the Gauteng Housing Crisis Committee and represents the Khoi San and the people of Eldorado Park, decried the lack of support the Coloured community receives from the government, especially when it comes to housing and human settlements.

Bill proposes barring impeached individuals from becoming public representatives

The DA's Glynnis Breytenbach says the party's private member's bill seeks to remove the gap in the law that allows impeached judges and Chapter 9 heads from being members of Parliament, provincial legislatures and councils. Image: File Picture: Phill Magakoe/Independent Newspapers If the DA could have its way, the Constitution should be amended to bar impeached judges and heads of Chapter 9 Institutions to stand for election as MPs, councillors and Members of Provincial Legislatures. The party's MP Glynnis Breytenbach has published a notice of intention to introduce a private members bill and invitation for comment on the draft bill. The bill comes in the wake of former judge John Hlophe and former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane being elected as MPs for the MK Party and EFF respectively after they were impeached over the past few years. Breytenbach said her party seeks to remove the gap in the law that allows impeached judges and Chapter 9 heads from being members of Parliament, provincial legislatures and councils. 'The bill will ensure that any judge or person appointed in terms of Chapter 9 of the Constitution that has been removed from office due to misconduct, is disqualified from becoming a Member of Parliament (MP), provincial legislature of municipal council. 'Allowing such individuals to become MPs brings the institution into disrepute and erodes public confidence in Parliament's ability to hold the executive and the judiciary accountable,' she said. Breytenbach also said South Africans deserved representatives that embody honesty and integrity, and allowing that category of persons found guilty of misconduct to become MPs was a slap in the face of honest, law-abiding South Africans. 'The bill will be a strong step toward bolstering public trust in Parliament and increasing the legislature's ability to hold other arms of government accountable. While other parties are intent on filling parliamentary positions with their impeachables, the DA seeks to close the gap in our law and bring integrity to our parliamentary bodies,' she said. Breytenbach called on interested parties to submit public comments on the proposed bill. 'Members of the public are strongly encouraged to give input on the Bill by making public submissions. Interested parties are invited to send their written submissions on the content of the Bill to the Speaker of the National Assembly by 31 August 2025.' The bill proposes amendment to sections 47, 106 and 158 of the Constitution. It will add to the list of citizens who are ineligible to become members of the National Assembly, a provincial legislature, and a municipal council respectively. The bill's memorandum states that the Constitution will be amended to provided that a former judge or person appointed in terms of Chapter 9, who was previously removed from office on the ground of either gross misconduct or misconduct, is not eligible to become a member of Parliament, a provincial legislature or a Municipal Council. Racist comments on Open Chats Podcast spark outrage; MultiChoice clarifies stance

Open Chats Podcast have sparked a profound uproar across South Africa, disrupting the nation's dialogue on race, dignity, and freedom of speech. Image: Supplied MultiChoice has distanced itself from the Open Chats Podcast amid growing backlash over racist comments made by the hosts towards the coloured community. In response to inquiries from IOL, a spokesperson for MultiChoice confirmed their awareness of the recent controversy, stating, "Open Chats' contract with DStv ended on July 25, as the show was removed to make way for our August content slate. The episode in question was not aired on our platform." The spokesperson further emphasised that MultiChoice adheres to stringent quality control processes and does not endorse any form of discriminatory content. "MultiChoice adheres to stringent quality control processes and does not promote any discriminatory content," the spokesperson said. In the clip, which, according to the podcast team, has since been deleted from the recording, the hosts make several racist comments, claiming that not only do coloured families have sexual relationships with each other (incest), but they also suffer mental issues. "Coloureds apparently chow (have sex with) each other," one of the hosts says. In response, a co-host says, "I do believe that because coloureds are crazy. A case has since been opened by the Patriotic Alliance. The apology Image: Facebook The podcast has issued a public apology via its social media pages, regretting the incident. "The intention was never to cause harm or disrespect the coloured community. Open Chats is a platform centred around open conversations which does at times touch on sensitive topics, and with that said we do understand that as a platform we should conduct our conversations in a respectful manner." However, the apology has been slammed by various sectors. Civil society organisation Cape Forum called the apology "inadequate since it serves more as an explanation of the wrongdoing rather than displaying sincere regrets". The forum's executive chairperson, Heindrich Wyngaard, said a generic note of regret after such a serious and defamatory incident cannot be seen as sincere accountability. "There is no direct admission of wrongdoing, nor any meaningful commitment to reparative action.' Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in Presidency for Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike also called out the podcast for their utterances. 'I reiterate my position, that all media platforms, including podcasts, must adhere to the regulations that ensure fair and responsible communication. We value freedom of expression, but it must be balanced with accountability," Letsike said. The Northern Cape National Coloured Congress has condemned racist utterances. "This is not satire. This is not banter. What we are witnessing is the manifestation of deep-seated racism, camouflaged as commentary, but ultimately weaponised against a community that has already suffered decades of exclusion, misrepresentation, and marginalisation, both under apartheid and now, heartbreakingly, under democratic rule," the NCC's Dean Goliath said. The DAs Ivan Meyer said the party has reported the matter to the SAHRC. "Hate speech, harmful racial stereotyping, and the public degradation of any group in our society cannot be tolerated," Meyer said. The ANC has also added its voice to the growing condemnation. "These statements are not only offensive, but they run completely counter to the founding values of our democratic society; values of human dignity, non-racialism, and unity. "To generalise and mock an entire community in the manner that was done is not only deeply hurtful but also a betrayal of the progress South Africans have made," the party said. Minister Macpherson takes a stand against corruption by charging suspended IDT CEO

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has requested the Independent Development Trust Board to investigate all contracts that were issued under suspended CEO Tebogo Malaka's tenure. Image: Armand Hough / Independent Newspapers Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson on Wednesday said he took personal responsibility to open charges against suspended CEO of Independent Development Trust (IDT) Tebogo Malaka and the trust's spokesperson because he would have missed the public outrage had he not done so. Speaking to the media outside the Cape Town police station, Macpherson also said he had made an undertaking that he would deal with officials involved in criminality. 'I think if I didn't take personal responsibility over this issue, I would be missing how angry South Africans are about this. I have been very clear to the officials of the department that if it comes to light that you are involved in criminality, I will personally take you on,' he said. Video Player is loading. 'I have taken the step to be here this afternoon, and to say that when I say something, I mean it. It is a warning to anyone who contemplates criminality that it will not just be a function of the department or the board, but they will come up against me as the executive authority entrusted to lead this department.' Macpherson made the statement after he opened criminal charges against Malaka and IDT's spokesperson Phasha Makgolane after they were captured on video allegedly offering Daily Maverick journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh R60,000 to not investigate and report about the suspended CEO. Macpherson said watching the video of Malaka allegedly offering Myburgh a bribe made him sick and left him in disbelief. 'It's one thing to hear about corruption; it's another thing to see it take place so blatantly and with a feeling of impunity. This stands in complete opposition to everything that I believe in and stand for.' Macpherson also said he took an oath to serve the public, protect the Constitution, and safeguard the country's precious public resources. 'This oath does not allow me to tolerate corruption. It does not allow me to make excuses for wrongdoing, and every action we take, whether releasing forensic reports, suspending officials only, or criminal cases, it is about building a state that is capable, ethical, and trustworthy.' Macpherson said the allegations remained deeply disturbing and that they were not just a criminal act, but an assault on the institutional framework of government to provide services to the people of South Africa, especially in the social infrastructure space that the IDT is responsible for. 'Attempting to bribe a journalist to bury the truth is an attack not only on the free press, but on our democracy. It is an attempt to silence accountability, to undermine public confidence and to shield corruption from exposure.' Macpherson stated that since assuming office, they faced fierce resistance, not just from within the bureaucracy, but through an organised and well-paid for and funded campaign to protect criminal entrenched interests when they began restoring order and integrity at the IDT. 'This network has been aided and abetted by political parties like ActionSA and the EFF, and sadly, members of the media,' he said. 'I have personally been the target and Miss Hill, by the way, of coordinated disinformation campaigns, including fabricated voice notes, false call logs and WhatsApps, which again, and it doesn't surprise me, are circulating again this morning to try and suggest that Miss Malaka is a victim of all of this fake news articles which were published by outlets and even on the front page of some newspapers, and then they had to retract them once the evidence was put on the table.' Macpherson said the narrative that he was paying journalists to attack the IDT was not only false, but it turned out to be a projection of what they were doing. 'They said we are paying journalists, and it turned out that they were then paying journalists.' He was convinced that the attempt to buy cooperation was not an isolated incident and that the criminal charges did not exist in a vacuum. 'They are directly connected to the systematic failures and alleged corruption that we have uncovered in the PwC forensic investigation into the R800 million PSA oxygen plant tender, the findings of which are released to the public last week, that investigation exposed companies who awarded contracts without valid separate licenses, a project that ballooned from R216 million to R592 million and without justification.'
