As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes global economies, China has established a commanding lead, leaving India striving to bridge the gap. Despite India's notable advancements, structural challenges and execution delays suggest that China will maintain its dominance in the AI sector for the foreseeable future.
The race to harness artificial intelligence (AI) is intensifying globally, with China and India emerging as significant players. However, a closer examination reveals a growing disparity between the two nations, with China establishing a formidable lead that India may find challenging to bridge in the near future.
China's Synthetic Data Supremacy
China's AI advancement is notably propelled by its prowess in synthetic data generation. Chinese firms have developed sophisticated generative adversarial networks (GANs) capable of producing training datasets that closely mirror real-world data. This capability is particularly beneficial in sectors like healthcare, where privacy concerns limit access to real patient data. For instance, Chinese medical AI platforms can simulate rare disease progression across thousands of synthetic patient profiles, facilitating robust diagnostic model training without compromising patient confidentiality.
This technological edge is underpinned by substantial investment. In 2024, China's synthetic data market reached $1.2 billion, with a significant majority of AI startups integrating synthetic datasets into their development processes. Tools like Alibaba's SynthMaker and Baidu's DeepFabric have become instrumental, automating a large portion of synthetic data workflows for commercial applications.
India's Nascent Endeavours
In contrast, India's foray into synthetic data remains in its infancy. While startups such as IndikaAI are making strides, their models currently achieve lower accuracy in replicating complex data patterns compared to their Chinese counterparts. The Indian market, projected to reach $158 million by 2030, lacks indigenous platforms tailored to the country's diverse linguistic and demographic landscape. Consequently, a vast majority of Indian AI firms rely on Western tools that may not be optimized for local nuances.
Challenges also persist in generating synthetic agricultural datasets essential for crop-yield prediction models. Indian efforts often fall short in capturing microclimate variations across the nation's numerous agro-ecological zones, leading to higher prediction errors relative to Chinese models.
Infrastructure: A tale of two strategies
China's strategic establishment of AI data hubs in tier-III cities like Guiyang and Lanzhou has proven effective. These centres benefit from lower operational costs and municipal incentives, enabling the processing of vast amounts of training data annually. Such decentralization facilitates continuous data refinement, exemplified by Wuhan's hub processing hundreds of millions of facial recognition samples monthly.
India's initiatives in tier-II and III cities, while promising, face hurdles. New data centers in cities like Coimbatore and Jaipur operate below capacity due to inconsistent power supply and limited demand from major cloud service providers. Additionally, state subsidies cover a smaller fraction of infrastructure costs compared to China's support, compelling Indian startups to allocate more capital to data operations. The limited reach of edge computing networks further hampers the deployment of latency-sensitive AI applications across the country.
Policy execution: divergent paths
China's comprehensive AI policy framework, epitomised by the 2025 Next Generation AI Development Plan, ensures coordination among academia, industry, and infrastructure. This alignment has resulted in a significant proportion of AI patents originating from state-industry partnerships and expedited deployment of technologies like autonomous vehicles through streamlined regulatory processes.
India's National AI Strategy, though ambitious, grapples with execution challenges. Initiatives such as the IndiaAI mission have yet to fully deliver on promises like subsidised GPU access for startups. State-level projects encounter delays due to bureaucratic hurdles, and patent approval times for AI innovations lag behind China's, dampening commercial incentives.
Linguistic diversity: A complex challenge
India's rich tapestry of languages and dialects presents unique challenges for AI training. Current natural language processing (NLP) models cover a limited portion of linguistic variations, in contrast to China's broader coverage across Mandarin dialects. Efforts like Bhashini's crowdsourcing platform face issues with data quality, and initiatives such as Karya's ethical crowdsourcing model operate on a relatively small scale. Furthermore, Indian AI startups often depend on global language models for regional language support, leading to increased costs and dependencies.
The road ahead
Bridging the AI divide requires India to address several critical areas in the next few months:
Synthetic Data Development: Accelerating the creation of robust GAN frameworks tailored to India's diverse data needs.
Infrastructure Enhancement: Expanding and optimising data centres, particularly in tier-II and III cities, to ensure consistent power supply and attract major cloud service providers.
Policy Implementation: Streamlining bureaucratic processes to expedite the execution of AI strategies and reduce patent approval times.
Linguistic Inclusion: Investing in NLP models that encompass the full spectrum of India's linguistic diversity, supported by large-scale, high-quality data annotation efforts.
While India's AI ambitions are frequently spotlighted in policy papers and public relations campaigns, the tangible progress remains limited. Without addressing these foundational challenges, the gap between China and India in the AI domain is poised to widen further in the coming years.

(File) China Rare Earth Elements: After assuming office for his second Presidential term in January this year, Donald Trump instigated a trade war with China by imposing exorbitant import tariffs on Chinese good. However, nearly six months later, the US President is desperately seeking a trade deal with Beijing to prevent key American industries from collapsing. Here's the reason why Trump made a U-turn on China, and is appeasing the Asian power to seek a China-US trade deal. Why US bent the knee to China? China dominates the global supply of rare earth elements, which are used by the US defense industry to manufacture advanced weapons and defense systems like radar systems, fighter jet engines, etc. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, China controls more than 90 percent of the world's processing and refining of rare earth elements, and also leads in other refining an extraction of other critical minerals like refined gallium, of which it controls 98.8 percent of global production. In recent years, Beijing has leveraged its dominance in critical mineral production and refining as a major negotiating point in trade wars, as well as targeting the defence industries of the US and its allies. The US defense industry is majorly dependent on China for rare earth minerals, but the supply has been nearly halted due to the ongoing US-China tariff war. China has imposed an export ban on rare earth elements to the US, effectively weaking the Pentagon's Pentagon's military preparations and weapons manufacturing capabilities. How China pressured the US into submission? In July 2023, Beijing imposed export controls requiring Chinese exporters to seek permission to ship eight gallium-related and six germanium-related products to other countries. In August last year, the list was expanded to include antimony, and in December, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce imposed export restrictions on gallium, germanium and antimony to the United States, as Beijing anticipated a trade war when Trump assumed office. In April this year, Beijing imposed export restrictions, mandating special export licenses for seven categories of medium and heavy rare earth elements (REEs) – samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium and yttrium – as well as magnets and other finished products containing these REEs to be shipped out of China. China's sweeping restrictions on REEs brought defense manufacturing to a halt in US and its allied countries, as supplies of rare earth minerals required for weapons' manufacturing rapidly thinned out. Why US requires large quantities of REEs? The United States is world's largest arms manufacturer and its defense sector requires a gargantuan amount of rare earth minerals to manufacture advanced modern weaponry such as precision-guided missiles, stealth fighter jets, naval warships, submarines and advanced radar systems. According to various reports, the US-made F-35 stealth fighter incorporates over 400 kg (900 lbs) of REEs in each unit for its jet engines, avionics, munitions and radar systems. The F-47, US' Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter jet, is expected to contain even larger amounts of critical minerals, due to cutting-edge features like unmanned flight, artificial intelligence integration, and next-gen stealth capabilities. Similarly, US navy warships and submarines require giant quantities of REEs, with Virginia-class submarines requiring 4,200 kilograms and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers needing 2,360 kilograms of REEs for their radars, munitions and other technologies. US Predator drones, Tomahawk missiles, Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) smart bombs, and advanced radar systems all rely on rare earth elements for propulsion, targeting, and guidance. According to experts, more than 80 percent of the Pentagon's weapon system supply chains contain antimony, gallium, or germanium. Does US have REE resources? While the US does have rare earth resources, those pale in comparison to China's gigantic hold on global refining and processing of REEs. The US accounts for around 15 percent of global production of REEs, but its not enough to meet the rare earth needs of US industries, especially the defense sector. Since 2020, the Pentagon has invested $439 million to build domestic supply chains in critical minerals, and a $35 million contract was awarded to MP Materials in 2022 for a heavy rare earth processing facility. However, its supply chain is still miniscule compared to China, and thus needs to import a major chunk of REEs from Beijing. In 2024, MP Materials announced a record production of 1,300 tons of neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide for producing neodymium magnets, while China produced an estimated 300,000 tons of NdFeB magnets in the same year. China's antimony dominance Additionally, the US does not have any mining facilities for gallium, while China reportedly produced 750 of the 760 tons of primary low-purity gallium produced worldwide in 2024 and is known to have production capacity of up to 1,000 tons. China also holds about 48 percent of the world's mined antimony, controls 98.8 percent of refined gallium production, and is responsible for 59.2 percent of refined germanium production. All these critical minerals are used in the manufacturing of advanced weapons, ranging from armor-piercing bullets, night vision goggles and cables, to nuclear weapons and naval warships.

When inquired about Tulip Siddiq's reported letter seeking audience with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during his upcoming London visit, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the government has not yet received any such letter. "We cannot comment on something we have not seen," he said. Siddiq, who is related to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the adviser on ministerial standards, Laurie Magnus, but had to resign as Economic Secretary to the Treasury and city minister over the allegations. During the visit, King Charles III will formally confer the prestigious 'Harmony Award 2025' on Muhammad Yunus, in a ceremony that will take place at St James's Palace in London on June 12, for his efforts to promote peace, sustainability and harmony between people and the environment. Yunus will also hold meetings with Secretaries-General of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to push Bangladesh's wider international engagements. The meeting with the IMO is important as it is the leading authority that regulates the maritime industry. Yunus has been trying to promote the strategic importance of the Chittagong Port where there are major investments planned, including Chinese investments.

ARM Embedded Technologies leases over four lakh sq ft with Bagmane in Bengaluru
ARM Embedded Technologies Pvt Ltd, the India arm of UK-based semiconductor and software design giant ARM Holdings, has leased over 4 lakh sq ft of Grade-A office space in Bagmane Constellation Business Park of the city to expand its operation. The space is in Taurus 4 (North Tower) block of the park, developed by Bagmane Constructions Pvt Ltd, and represents a fresh lease agreement, not a renewal or consolidation, said people aware of the development. According to the registered lease document shared by Propstack, a data analytic firm, the lease term spans 15 years, with a structured 15% rent escalation every three years, indicating ARM's long-term expansion strategy in India. The monthly rental is pegged at Rs102 per sq ft, translating to a monthly rent of approximately Rs 4.17 crore, or Rs 50 crore annually. Over the full 15-year lease term, ARM is expected to commit close to Rs1,000 crore in total rental payments, marking this as one of the most high-value, long-duration commercial leases signed in the country in recent quarters, said Propstack. The lease covers multiple levels within the building, which includes three basement levels, a ground floor, and 11 upper floors, providing ARM with space for current operations and future growth. The security deposit has been recorded at Rs 20.59 crore, reflecting the scale and seriousness of the engagement. Bagmane Constellation Business Park, located in the CBD-adjacent to the KR Puram-Marathahalli stretch, is a premium IT SEZ that has consistently attracted top-tier global tenants including Amazon, Boeing, and PwC. According to real estate experts, the deal underscores the growing institutional commitment to India by global technology firms, particularly in the semiconductor and embedded systems domain. As ARM plays a pivotal role in enabling global AI, IoT, and mobile computing technologies, this expansion points to increasing R&D and engineering activity being channelled through its India operations. 'This deal is significant not only in terms of size but also the tenure and financial commitment involved. A 15-year lease of over Rs 1,000 crore in value reflects clear confidence in India's innovation ecosystem and the long-term stability of Bengaluru 's commercial office market,' said a senior executive in the office leasing space. The lease comes at a time when the Indian commercial office market is witnessing strong absorption trends, especially from global capability centres (GCCs) in tech and life sciences. With new supply in Bengaluru expected to remain tight in the next few quarters, such large pre-commitments signal robust demand for quality real estate, particularly in core locations. With this deal, ARM joins a growing list of global technology firms committing long-term capital to India's innovation corridor, reinforcing the country's position as a critical node in the world's digital and semiconductor economy.
