Do Kwon pleads guilty to US fraud charges in US$40 billion crypto collapse
Kwon, 33, who co-founded Singapore-based Terraform Labs and developed the TerraUSD and Luna currencies, entered the plea at a court hearing in New York before US District Judge Paul Engelmayer.
He had pleaded not guilty in January to a nine-count indictment charging him with securities fraud, wire fraud, commodities fraud and money-laundering conspiracy.
Accused of misleading investors in 2021 about TerraUSD – a so-called stablecoin designed to maintain a value of US$1 – Kwon pleaded guilty to the two counts under an agreement with the Manhattan US Attorney's office, which brought the charges.
He faces up to 25 years in prison when Engelmayer sentences him on December 11, though prosecutor Kimberly Ravener said the government had agreed to advocate for a prison term of no more than 12 years provided he accepts responsibility for his crimes.

Kwon is one of several cryptocurrency moguls to face federal charges after a slump in digital token prices in 2022 prompted the collapse of a number of companies.

Hong Kong healthcare professionals among 5 arrested over elderly services fraud
Hong Kong's anti-corruption agency has arrested five people, including two healthcare professionals, for allegedly defrauding up to millions in government subsidies for elderly community services through fake visit records and sharing funds with seniors' family members. Matthew Chang Chor-ming, principal investigator from the Independent Commission Against Corruption's (ICAC) operations department, revealed on Thursday that last month's arrests included a registered nurse and an occupational therapist who masterminded a plan to defraud the Community Care Service Voucher Scheme for the Elderly. 'We have discovered people with criminal intent using their role as medical professionals to defraud government subsidies by exploiting residents who were unfamiliar with the scheme or manipulating their greed, depriving some elderly people from at-home care services they were entitled to,' he said. The ICAC arrested three women and two men, aged between 27 and 57, last month. Three of the arrestees worked at a private care agency established by the registered nurse. All five are currently out on bail. The agency began investigating the case following a referral from the Social Welfare Department, which received a complaint alleging fraud last year. The voucher scheme enables elderly residents to directly purchase various care services, ranging from day care centre attendance to at-home services such as rehabilitation and catering.

Xiaomi regains top spot in Southeast Asia's smartphone market for first time in 4 years
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi became the largest smartphone vendor in Southeast Asia for the first time in four years on the back of strong second quarter sales of its budget and premium handsets, bucking a downturn precipitated by US-China trade tensions, according to Canalys. Xiaomi's smartphone shipments in the region jumped 8 per cent year on year to 4.7 million units in the second quarter, propelling it to the top spot for the first time since the same period in 2021, the research firm said in a report on Wednesday. The Chinese handset maker captured 19 per cent of the smartphone market in Southeast Asia, overtaking Chinese rival Transsion and South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics, which respectively accounted for 18 per cent and 17 per cent of the market in the April to June quarter. Xiaomi's growth was driven by its efforts to expand its sales channel, which allowed it to scale its sub-brands, Calalys said. The shipments of the budget brand Poco more than doubled, while sales of its premium 15 series grew 54 per cent year on year, which was 'a milestone for a brand long perceived as a budget flagship', research manager Le Xuan Chiew said.
