Alphabet's Google One hits 150 million subscriptions amid shift to AI-powered services
Listen to article
Alphabet's Google One service has surpassed 150 million subscribers, the company told to the media, marking a major leap in its shift toward subscription revenue as it faces rising pressure from AI competitors.
The milestone reflects a 50% jump in subscribers since February 2024, when Google One reached 100 million users.
That same month, Google launched a $19.99-a-month premium tier offering exclusive artificial intelligence features.
The AI-powered plan has already attracted "millions" of users, said Shimrit Ben-Yair, a Google vice president overseeing the service.
Google One continues to offer cheaper storage-only plans, but the AI tier marks Alphabet's clearest effort yet to monetise its artificial intelligence tools directly.
Subscriptions are playing a growing role in Alphabet's strategy to reduce reliance on advertising, which generated over 75% of its $350 billion revenue in 2024.
The success of Google One comes as Alphabet confronts a shift in consumer behaviour.
AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's own Gemini are beginning to alter how users search for information—threatening Google's dominance in online search.
In a recent court testimony, an Apple executive confirmed that searches on Safari declined for the first time, partly due to AI tools.
Apple is developing its own AI search options, intensifying the competitive threat to Alphabet.
Alphabet lost $150 billion in market value after the testimony.
Unlike traditional search, AI platforms currently lack a clear model for advertising. Many tech companies, including Alphabet, are now leaning into subscription or usage-based pricing models.
CEO Sundar Pichai addressed monetisation during a February earnings call. 'Just like you've seen with YouTube, we'll give people options over time,' he said. 'For this year, I think you'll see us be focused on the subscription direction.'

iPhone 17 Air Tipped To Be First Apple Phone Without USB-C
Listen to article Apple is reportedly poised to take a bold step into a wireless future, with the upcoming iPhone 17 Air expected to ditch the USB-C port entirely, ending cable charging for good. The move would make the iPhone 17 Air Apple's first fully portless smartphone, relying entirely on Qi2-certified MagSafe wireless charging and cloud-based data syncing. According to various media reports that cite industry insiders, Apple sees this as the beginning of a broader transition to cable-free mobile devices. Read more: Leaked images suggest iPhone 17 features, specs ahead of launch While previous reports suggested Apple had delayed the shift due to concerns about European Union regulations, the European Commission has now clarified that such a portless phone is fully legal under current law. 'If a phone does not offer wired charging, then it is not required to have a USB-C port,' said Commission spokesperson Federica Miccoli. The clarification clears a key regulatory hurdle, paving the way for Apple to lead a new generation of wireless-only devices. Apple was previously required to switch from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C to comply with the EU's Common Charger Directive. In the past, the European Union mandated the adoption of USB-C ports for all mobile devices to reduce electronic waste and streamline the consumer experience. But the law applies only when a physical charging port is present. Read: Apple iPhone 17 Air: What we know so far By removing the USB-C connector entirely, Apple effectively opts out of the mandate, provided the wireless charging experience is as seamless and efficient as a traditional cabled connection. Apple's Qi2-compliant MagSafe technology, now standardised and adopted by other manufacturers, appears to satisfy those expectations. The company has already removed SIM card slots in some models and is expected to eliminate more physical components to further reduce thickness and improve design. Also read: Leaked designs for Apple's foldable iPhone 17: What to expect and how much will It cost? The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be the slimmest iPhone ever made and will debut in September. Analysts say it could set the tone for future iPhones – and the broader smartphone industry – by initiating the complete phasing out of physical charging ports.

Karachi hackathon showcases real-world solutions powered by generative AI
Listen to article The Build with AI Mini Hackathon, hosted at Folio3 on May 31, 2025, brought together over 120 participants — a mix of professionals, students, and tech enthusiasts — for a high-energy, four-hour innovation sprint centered on Generative AI. Organized by GDG Kolachi in collaboration with Folio3, the event showcased how AI can address pressing real-world challenges. The day opened with two impactful sessions that set the tone: 'Vibe Coding' by Muhammad Aashir and Hassan Mujtaba, which ignited the room with creativity and curiosity, and 'Vertical AI Agents' by Jaya Rajwani, Technology Lead at iENGINEERING, who explored the rise of domain-specific AI agents in transforming digital ecosystems. Working under tight constraints, 25 teams prototyped solutions powered by Gemini, Google's latest generative AI technology. Projects spanned diverse domains, including vehicle detection, FIR automation, import-export document intelligence, AI bidding systems, urban sanitation monitoring, and public transport tracking — all within just four hours. Participants were guided by an incredible team of mentors, including Raheel Siddiqui (Mozaik), Zain Ahmed (Neem), Farah Mehboob (Valider), Umar Shaikh (EY), Huzaifa Shahbaz (Swift Dynamics), Muhammad Taha (Consultant), Saleha Shujaat (Software Engineer), Ramsha Zaheer (Propellus), Eman Ahmed (Technical Consultant), Talha Ashraf (Polymath), Rashid Wassan (DevOps Engineer), and Arbab Siddiqui (Folio3). Their real-time feedback and support elevated team ideas from concept to MVP, making the mentorship experience a highlight of the event. The hackathon concluded with three winning teams, each receiving a PKR 25,000 cash prize. The judging panel — comprised of industry leaders Aaqib Sayed (DigitalOcean), Yunus Jamal (Atompoint), and Talha Ashraf (Polymath) — evaluated submissions based on innovation, relevance, and technical execution. The event was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of community, creativity, and the potential of AI. With Folio3's generous venue support and GDG Kolachi's seamless execution, the Build with AI Mini Hackathon proved that Karachi's tech ecosystem is not just growing — it's thriving.
