"Historic step": Union Minister Kishan Reddy lauds centre's decision to conduct caste census
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on Monday lauded the centre's decision to conduct the 16th population census, which would include caste enumeration, and labelled it a 'historic step.'
Advocating for the caste census, he said that the work at the policy level with regard to the welfare schemes, budget allocation, political reservations would be worked upon in a proper manner.
'The government of India has taken a historic step. Since Independence, the general census will entail a census of the backward classes. Today, the government of India has issued the notification. There will also be a caste census; it is a very big decision. After this, be it welfare activity, scheme, budget allocation, political reservation, everything will be worked upon in a proper manner,' Reddy told ANI.
Speaking about the arrangements for the Covid-19 cases, Reddy said that he was visiting his Lok Sabha constituency (Secunderabad) and the hospitals here to inspect whether big hospitals have necessary arrangements for Covid cases.
'Recently, in a cabinet meeting, PM Modi directed all the ministers to visit big hospitals in their respective constituencies. It was to ensure that big hospitals had all the necessary arrangements for Covid cases...In this regard, today, I have come here to the Gandhi Hospital in my (Lok Sabha) constituency. The hospital's senior officials have assured me that the hospital is completely ready for the Covid patients,' the Union Minister said.
On Monday, the central government notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027.
As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.'
The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh, snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026.
The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected.
Subsequently, in the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected.
Caste enumeration will also be done during the census.
For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. This is the 16th Census since its beginning and the 8th since independence.
The ensuing Census will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications.
Provision of Self-enumeration would also be made available to the people.
Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage. (ANI)

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy instructs officials to prepare action plan to expedite works in medical colleges
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy instructed the officials on Monday to prepare an action plan immediately to ensure the functioning of 34 medical colleges with all necessary facilities. According to a release from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), CM Reddy also ordered the officials to constitute an Official Committee to develop infrastructure in all medical colleges. The Committee should visit each college and submit a report on the development of amenities, the requirement of funds, expediting the completion of all works in the colleges, assistance from the government, etc. CM Reddy held a review meeting with the officials of the Health Department at the ICCC on Monday. He discussed several issues raised by the National Medical Council (NMC) regarding the medical colleges in the state. The Chief Minister directed the officials to prepare a comprehensive report on all the issues related to recruitment in government medical colleges, promotions of teaching staff, increased beds in hospitals affiliated to medical colleges, the requirement of medical equipment in the colleges, and filling of the vacancies. The Chief Minister said that the state government will release necessary funds immediately and that officials should immediately bring to the government's attention the release of funds and permissions from the Union Ministry of Health . The state government will address all these issues by approaching the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, and the concerned officials in the ministry, the CM said. In view of the high demand for nursing staff in Japan, Chief Minister Reddy instructed the officials to include Japanese language as an optional subject in the Nursing Colleges. The Japanese Government has already extended its support to provide arrangements for teaching the Japanese language to nursing students in the state, the Chief Minister said. CM Reddy also suggested that officials study the issue of using an App to closely monitor the patients who come to the hospitals, doctors' services to the patients, and hospital opening times. Considering the importance of medical services and medical education, the Chief Minister instructed the state Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao to conduct a review of these two wings in the third week of every month. State Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Chief Minister's Principal Secretary V. Seshadri, Chief Minister's Secretary Manik Raj, Health Secretary Christina Z Chongthu, Director of Health Dr. Narendra Kumar and others were present during the meeting.

Today in Politics: ED summons Robert Vadra in PMLA case; Karnataka HC to hear Bengaluru stampede petition
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a fresh summons to Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, for questioning in a money laundering case linked to UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari, official sources said on Monday. He has been asked to depose before the agency on Tuesday. Vadra, 56, was called for questioning in the case on June 10 but he skipped, saying he had flu-like symptoms on June 9 and had undertaken a Covid-19 test as per protocol. His lawyer had then said that Vadra had no intention of avoiding summons and was ready to appear before the ED anytime before or after his travel abroad later this month. The agency is understood to have summoned Vadra to record his statement under the PMLA and subsequently file a chargesheet in the case. The ED had questioned Vadra for three consecutive days in April in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 land deal in Haryana. He is being investigated in three money laundering cases by the ED. Terming the charges a 'political witch hunt', Vadra said he was being 'hounded and harassed' to subserve political ends. Stampede case in Karnataka HC After receiving all relevant documents relating to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede incident, and requesting English translations for the same documents, the Karnataka HC is set to hear the matter on Tuesday. The stampede that occurred during the celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) 2025 IPL victory on June 3, had claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people, prompting the HC to take cognisance on June 5. The court had issued a notice to the Karnataka government to investigate the cause and propose preventive measures. Meanwhile, the state's Opposition BJP is continuing its protest demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, alleging that they were responsible for the stampede. On Tuesday, the BJP will hold a protest at Bengaluru's Freedom Park. V-P Dhankhar in Puducherry Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is in Puducherry for a three-day visit, is set to participate in events at the Central University on Tuesday. During his visit CM N Rangasamy submitted a memorandum to him seeking a 25% quota of seats in all the courses available in the Central University for the natives of the Union Territory. When the demand was raised in 1990, the then Vice Chancellor of the University A Gnanam extended reservation of 25% of seats after due consideration with the University's Academic Council and the Executive committee extended the reservation in the courses available in the university in 1997. A reservation of 25% of seats was provided for eight courses in the beginning, which increased subsequently to 18 courses.
