British man charged by US with leading hacking scheme and causing millions in damages
A British man has been charged in the US with allegedly leading a global hacking scheme which caused millions of pounds in damages.
Kai West, 25. who operated under the online identity IntelBroker was arrested in France in February.
The US is seeking his extradition over allegations he stole and sold data. He faces up to 20 years in jail if found guilty.
"West, and his online co-conspirators, took that stolen data, and offered it for sale online for more than $2 million," according to an indictment by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
West faces charges of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and wire fraud, accessing a protected computer to obtain information and wire fraud, according to the indictment.

According to FBI assistant director in charge, Christopher G Raia, the "years-long" scheme had caused victims losses of at least 25 million dollars (£18.2m) worldwide.
A telecommunications company, a municipal healthcare provider and an internet service provider were among more than 40 victims listed in the indictment.
"The IntelBroker alias has caused millions in damages to victims around the world,"
"This action reflects the FBI's commitment to pursuing cybercriminals around the world.
"New Yorkers are all too often the victims of intentional cyber schemes and our office is committed to bringing these remote actors to justice."
Mr Clayton thanked British, French, Spanish and Dutch authorities for their assistance in the investigation.

Hero police officer had ‘no time for fear' before confronting swordsman
Credit: Metropolitan Police A police officer who confronted a swordsman that was in the grip of cannabis-induced psychosis has said he had 'no time for fear'. Insp Moloy Campbell was injured when he and his team rushed to stop Marcus Arduini Monzo's rampage, in which 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin was killed. At the Old Bailey on Wednesday, Monzo, 37, was found guilty of the schoolboy's murder following a three-week trial. Speaking after the verdict, Mr Campbell said that as he was making his way to the scene in Hainault, east London, he heard another officer, Pc Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield had been attacked. He said: 'As we were heading to the incident my sergeant was driving and I was in the operator seat. As we heard that transmission 'police officer stabbed, police officer stabbed' I turned to him and said: 'Just get us there, don't speed up, don't let red mist get to you. We need to get there and get control of this incident'.' He said his thoughts were entirely focused on the need to 'preserve life', including that of his officers. Mr Campbell took the decision to confront Monzo in a car park, and ran at him with baton drawn in terrifying scenes captured on police body-worn video. He said: 'There was no time for fear. That is not a reflection of bravery of me or anyone else, it's a fact. There was no time for that. There is a job to be done and there was an objective that needed to be met, and that was, as I say, the preservation of life. 'At that point there was no help coming. Armed police were coming but they were 10, 15 minutes away, and that's far too long in that situation. 'That's not the fault of my colleagues, it's just the way it played out on that morning.' Mr Campbell, who suffered a slash wound to his hand, said 'luck' and the 'good instincts' of members of the public were the only reasons Monzo failed to kill anyone else. He said that he felt enormous pride for his team who managed to detain the suspect. 'They did what we do every day. We chase people with knives. We chase people with offensive weapons,' he said. He added: 'As I speak, there is probably a police officer somewhere in the country chasing someone with a knife or something else. 'What we saw in Hainault was extraordinary circumstances in the way it turned out, but it's not unusual to have someone running round with a knife at 7am. It's not unusual at all.' Of his reaction, he said: 'My entire thoughts were for the family of Daniel. I spoke to my team and thanked them again and filled them in on the finer details. 'My thoughts were for Daniel's family who I am humbled by – incredible people. I think the jury came to the right decision.' Ch Supt Stuart Bell said he was 'incredibly proud' of the police response. 'The scale and severity of the attack was intense and quite widespread, and throughout the entire incident our officers responded with courage, placing their own safety second, trying to prevent harm to others first, showing great courage and bravery and teamwork to eventually detain Monzo. 'That type of incident is rare, thankfully, but the notion of our officers running towards and dealing with dangerous situations is not. 'Eighteen officers a day in London are assaulted dealing with calls. The behaviour our officers displayed that day is displayed every day, the fearlessness, the courage, the self-sacrifice. Frankly, Moloy and Yasmin both suffered severe injuries as a result of them attempting to prevent harm to others, and our officers take that action every day.' He said: 'Daniel was universally described as a talented, gentle young man with great potential and a life ahead of him who was loved by so many. 'His untimely death is a tragedy and words do not come close to describing how tragic, how random the events which befell Daniel were. Edinburgh police swarm high street in late-night emergency incident
Police in Edinburgh raced to an incident on Thursday with a huge emergency response in the area. Around 9.30pm on June 26, officers swarmed Portobello High Street and a number of police vehicles were at the scene. Worried locals claim cops were "questioning some men" on the street. "By the looks of the photo, it's literally 30 yards along from the police station on Portobello Road." Police Scotland have been approached for comment. Do not become a TikTok victim. While most TikTok warnings focus on the perceived threat from its ownership and whether or not U.S. data is openly or secretly transmitted to China, there are other threats for its vast user base as well — these are very real and happening now. The team at Guardio has just warned that 'there's an ongoing scam on TikTok involving dozens of accounts that post emotional videos that link to websites that either collect donations (usually claiming to support animals) or sell products.' The videos (1,2) 'are highly manipulative and some have millions of views and hundreds of comments.' The products are as you'd expect, 'cow slippers, dog lamps, and more.' The researchers say these videos 'often ask viewers to 'watch for 9 seconds to help the cause' and are designed to tug at your emotions to encourage donations or purchases.' But it's all fake. 'Some likely use AI or deepfakes, while others use videos stolen from real accounts without consent.' And as is the tendency with TikTok, it's spreading like wildfire as 'new fake accounts keep appearing on the platform.' Unsurprisingly, Guardio warns that 'if you donate through these scam sites, your money won't reach any animal shelter. And if you buy something, you might receive it — but it's usually a cheap product, not the handmade item the video promised.' The warning for TikTok users is not to watch these videos as they're misleading fakes, but also more critically never to click on any links or buy any products or provide any information if asked. And even more simply — do not follow any of these accounts. These accounts also rely on casual shares and likes, spreading their dangerous viral content — do not do that either. You would be sending malicious links to your own followers, putting even more money into these scammers' pockets.
