Drogheda United expelled from Conference League after losing appeal
The League of Ireland club submitted an appeal after Uefa notified them that they face expulsion from this season's Uefa Conference League regarding multi-club ownership for the FAI Cup champions.
A statement from Drogheda United reads:
'To our supporters, players, staff, volunteers, and the entire Drogheda community,
It is with great heartbreak and disbelief that we inform you we have lost our appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. We strongly disagree with this decision, and had hoped and believed that the principles of fairness and common sense would prevail.

'After months of engagement, constructive dialogue, countless hours of legal preparation, and multiple proposals based on frameworks that have been accepted in the past, we have come up short. Despite genuine and vocal support across the football world, the ruling did not fall in our favour. We are heartbroken by the outcome.
'We know that this decision will cause hurt and frustration across our entire community. Not just because of the decision itself, but because we know how much this meant to everyone associated with Drogheda United. We know how hard this team fought to earn a place in European competition. We know how transformational that opportunity would have been, not just financially, but emotionally for our players, our staff, and our community.
'We disagree with this decision. We believe it is unjust. Rules should protect opportunity, not prevent it. Especially for community-driven clubs like ours who fight every day to punch above their weight.
'Nevertheless, we accept responsibility. And we're sorry. But while we are saddened, we are also emboldened.
'We will not let this setback define us. Instead, we will use it as fuel. Our club has never been handed anything and we've earned every inch through grit, resilience, and unity. And we will continue to do so.
'We will push for reform so that no other community club finds itself in this position again. All parties can do better. And we will do our part to make sure we all do.
We will share more in the coming days.
'But for now, our focus turns back to what we can control: the ongoing LOI campaign and our FAI Cup title defense, beginning in July against Crumlin. There is work to be done, on the pitch and off it. We are here. And we are not going anywhere. We will continue to invest in all areas of the club, including plans for a new stadium. We want to be regulars in Europe.
'This club is on the rise. Our league is on the rise. And no single outcome will change that.
'We fight on. Together.'

Rovers' Euro goal hero took PAY-CUT to extend spell with League of Ireland side
Stephen Bradley has paid tribute to evergreen striker Rory Gaffney after the 35-year-old's latest heroics - and revealed that he took a pay-cut to prolong his stay at Tallaght Stadium. Gaffney took his tally for the season to 12 with a classy brace in Thursday's Europa Conference League demolition of Kosovan side Ballkani. He scored either side of half-time in a 4-0 win, which wiped out Ballkani's 1-0 first-leg advantage. Gaffney struggled for game-time last year, playing only eight games in the Premier Division and missing out on the European league phase campaign with achilles and ankle injuries. Bradley admitted that he had doubts about whether the Galwayman would be able for another campaign with the League of Ireland giants. However, he was convinced by the striker to offer him a new deal, with Gaffney giving some assurances and concessions in the process. 'You always have doubts,' said Bradley after the veteran's outstanding display on Thursday night. 'When you're hitting your mid-30s and you have the injuries he's had, of course there's a little bit of doubt thinking. 'But I also know Rory, I trust him and the conversations are very honest. 'I'm willing to come back, I'm willing to take a pay cut. If I'm injured, I'll walk away'. 'There's always that bit of doubt, there has to be at his age. But Rory is so matter-of-fact. If he tells you something, you believe him. 'And he's not saying it just to bullshit you. He wouldn't do that. He's not that type. When he was talking to me, he was telling me the truth.' Bradley added that Gaffney could have walked away from Rovers, with two clubs offering him the security of two-year deals. When it was put to the Rovers boss that few players would agree to a pay-cut, he said: 'No, not many. I think that probably sums up the career he's had. 'I said he could have walked away and had them two contracts, two-year deals and been comfortable. 'But he wants to....(he's said) 'I want to win things. I want to taste Europe. I want to win the league. I want to win the cup. I want to win things. I'm nearly there and when I'm finished, I want to finish winning things'. 'You have to admire that. The other job will be negotiating for him next year!' Bradley described Gaffney on Thursday night as 'unplayable' - as the former Mervue, Limerick, Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers, Salford City and Walsall man tormented the Ballkani defence. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side eventually won 3-2 on the night and 7-3 on aggregate, but it was a less-than-straightforward progression. After winning the first leg 4-1 in Dublin, the Turkish side might have been expecting another routine victory this evening. But first-half goals from Conor Carty and Ryan McLaughlin made it 2-0 to the Saints on the night and 4-3 on aggregate, as the Irish side threatened an unlikely comeback. No stopping Amond as in-form Waterford striker plans to keep going into 40s
Evergreen Waterford striker Pádraig Amond believes he's capable of prolonging his career beyond the 40-year-old mark. There's still plenty of verve left in the 37-year-old judging by his goalscoring prowess. His first season back in the League of Ireland following 13 years abroad ended with being joint-top scorer. Already this season the Carlowman is within two of that 14-goal Premier Division haul – earning the latest Soccer Writers' Ireland Player of the Month. And yet it's the allure of silverware that drives him more than personal objectives. His Waterford side face Cork City at Turner's Cross to decide which of the Munster rivals secure a spot in the FAI Cup quarter-finals. Having within their strikeforce a player who scored against Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Middlesbrough in the English FAI Cup will always give them a chance. It's been 45 years since the Blues last won the Blue Riband. Amond played a part in his previous LOI club Sligo Rovers lifting the 2010 trophy by featuring up to the last-16 stage. 'I think it goes down as I've won it - but I didn't,' he clarifies. 'I do want to win it before I retire. So in the next five years.' That would bring him up to 42. Jason Byrne made it to 39 in the pursuit of Brendan Bradley's all-time goals record but Amond is feeling physically and mentally equipped to extend his playing days. 'I don't see why not,' he says when asked if hitting the 40 barrier is realistic. 'I'm playing every minute of every game now and I don't feel sore after games. Ten years ago I did, which is funny.' There's no magical formula to his longevity, such as yoga or pilates. Being chased around the house by his young son and daughter appears to be the latest formula. 'I tried all of the different things and they just used to hurt me,' he confesses about alternative training methods. 'What we did was we looked at specific things. The gym sessions are modified, so too the recovery sessions for myself but I train every day. 'The only time I don't train is when they basically force me not to train. So I'll constantly be like, 'I want to train, I want to train'. And I've said this to our S&C coach here, Darragh Mulcahy, who's brilliant. He said the day I tell you I'm sore, you'll know I'm sore.' Another contributor to his armoury is the changed season since returning to Ireland. 'I know it might sound silly but I find the League of Ireland better than England because there's fewer games,' he admits. 'Each season, there were 55-plus games across all competitions and loads of travel whereas over here there's 36 league games. Five games wins you the Cup.' That's where his focus is. Under John Coleman and his assistant Danny Ventre, a former team of Amond's at Sligo, Waterford have moved away from relegation danger. They can concentrate on delving deep into the competition, a potential springboard in the eyes of their top scorer. 'I was saying to Danny recently that our Waterford team are in a similar position to where Sligo were before winning the Cup in 2010,' he reasons. 'From avoiding the drop the previous, under Paul Cook all of a sudden a couple of the players were coming in across from the UK and they'd built a real good camaraderie around everyone. 'Beaten in the 2009 FAI Cup final, the team then won two Cups in 2010, the FAI Cup the following year, league in 2012 and the FAI Cup again 2013. 'I'm not saying we're going to win the league in the next three years but you've got to look at these competitions as a great way of success. 'You can be brilliant in most of the 36 league games and still miss out on the last day for a place in Europe. 'Winning the FAI Cup is bigger this year too by qualifying for the Europa League and all the money that brings to the club. 'We saw how the FAI Cup win catapulted Drogheda United into the brilliant league form they've shown this year. It's just about getting that opportunity and taking that chance when it comes.'
