Edinburgh Fringe 2025 Comedy Highlights: Here are 18 work in progress shows from big name comedians
One of the fun things to do in Edinburgh during festival season is to see a well-know comedian work through new ideas that will end up being performed in venues across the UK - and the world.
Work in Progress shows are often fairly haphazard affairs, where the performers may refer to notes, happily follow comedic dead ends, and guage the audience's reaction to different material and punchlines.
The positives for an audience is that for a small price they get to see a big name in a tiny venue deliver what is often an entirely unique performance never to be repeated.
It's often also the case the the material has actually been pretty well developed between the listing being submitted for the Fringe programme and the show itself – equating to even more of a bargain. In 2023 Ahir Shah even won the Edinburgh Comedy Award for a show that was originally listed as a work in progress.
This means they often sell out quite far in advance, so if you fancy any of these, don't delay booking them on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe website.
Here are 18 of the best in this year's programme.
1 . Daniel Sloss
With two Netflix specials under his belt (and another show recorded for HBO), Scottish comedy star Daniel Sloss is now used to playing big rooms - having sold out theatres in New York and toured to over 55 countries. He'll be trying out new stuff in the intimate surroundings of Just The Tonic's Atomic Room this year from July 31-August 21. His warning to fans? 2 . Bridget Christie
Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Bridget Christie returns to the Fringe following acclaim for writing and starring in Channel 4 show 'The Change', about a woman who finds a new lease of life when she goes through the menopause. A regular on television and radio, she's back for the first time in a few years with a work in progress at the Monkey Barrel from August 2-9. 3 . Olga Koch
"Comedian Olga Koch is going to tell you a scary story over the course of an hour" is the premise of this work in progress from one of the most consistent and hilarious Fringe performers of the last decade. Her show last year, 'Olga Koch: Comes From Money' was her best yet - so it'll be fascinating to see what she's going to come up with to top it. Former SNP MP Mhairi Black became the youngest MP elected to the House of Commons since the Reform Act 1832 back in 2015 - she was 20 years, seven months and 25 days old. My Brilliant Career: Netflix announces adaptation of Miles Franklin's classic novel
Netflix has announced an adaptation of the Australian classic My Brilliant Career, the much-loved novel by Miles Franklin. The new show, which is now filming around South Australia, stars The Newsreader actor Philippa Northeast in the lead role as Sybylla, a headstrong young woman who finds herself torn between the safety of a traditional life and the liberation of being an unmarried writer. Sybylla goes to stay at Caddagat, the homestead of her grandmother Mrs Bossier, who will be played in the Netflix adaptation by Anna Chancellor from the BBC's Pride and Prejudice and Four Weddings and a Funeral. At Caddagat, Sybylla befriends Harry, a young, wealthy neighbour who falls in love with her; Harry will be played in the new adaptation by Slow Horses actor Christopher Chung. Andor actor Genevieve O'Reilly will play Sybylla's aunt Helen and Kate Mulvany plays Harry's aunt Gussie Beecham. What It Feels Like For a Girl actor Jake Dunn will play Frank Hawden, a jackaroo at Caddagat who makes constant advances on Sybylla. The adaptation has been developed and co-written by Liz Doran, who worked on Josh Thomas' comedy Please Like Me and the surfing drama Barons. 'It's been a privilege to work with so many incredible creatives on this reimagining of Miles Franklin's rollicking tale of a young woman's quest to determine her own life,' Doran said on Wednesday. Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, for whom both the Miles Franklin and Stella literary awards are named, was only a teenager when she wrote My Brilliant Career. It was a bestseller, but Franklin was subject to 'unwelcome notoriety' due to speculation over her novel's autobiographical elements; she pulled the book from publication, stipulating it could only be reprinted after her death. Franklin died in 1954 and the novel has never been out of print since it was printed again in 1966, becoming a feminist classic. The book was also adapted into a 1979 film starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill and directed by Gillian Armstrong, and into a hit stage musical at the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2024. Minyoung Kim, Netflix's vice-president of Asia Pacific content, called My Brilliant Career 'a timeless Australian story with themes as relevant today as when it was originally published'. 'We're excited to be partnering with some of Australia's best creatives and talent to bring this story to a whole new generation on Netflix and, with its stunning locations, there's no better home for this production than South Australia,' Kim said.

Popular singer cancelled only Scottish gig date in Glasgow
Hardy was set to perform at the city's O2 Academy on Monday, June 30, as part of his Jim Bob World Tour. However, it has now been revealed that Hardy has cancelled his show in the city, which was his only Scottish date on the tour. On top of that, the musician has also axed his Birmingham, Brixton, and Manchester concerts. The 34-year-old, from Mississippi in the US, is a well-known country music singer-songwriter. He is known for his tunes, including Truck Bed, One Beer, Given Heaven Some Hell, Wait in the Truck, Hide My Gun, and Red.

Michelle Keegan defended by fans over update days after Mark Wright apology
The Netflix and soap actress has shared a number of snaps to her Instagram, and fans were quick to defend the new mum Michelle Keegan has been flooded with messages from fans following her latest summer reveal. It comes as the actress is busy soaking up life as a new mum, having recently welcomed her first child with her husband, Mark Wright. The pair, who shared the joyous news of their daughter's arrival on March 12, have just posted an update as they take their newborn, Palma Elizabeth Wright, on her family holiday. Earlier in April, Michelle and Mark treated their Instagram followers to several sun-filled photos. Michelle then revisited her account to display her stunning outfits for the getaway, where they resided at the luxurious SO/ Sotogrande Spa and Golf Resort Hotel nestled in Spain's Andalusian countryside. Michelle has now uploaded a new set of snaps apparently from her Spanish getaway. The actress dazzled in a brown cut-out bathing suit, complemented with an oversized straw hat, matching bag, and a flowing white sarong. Having been spotted earlier participating in some padel and making the most of the weather as reports Manchester Evening News, Michelle captioned her Instagram: "It's an @orfilabee Summer," signaling fans to snag the chic ensemble from her own label, which she co-founded. Support poured in for Michelle Keegan as fans rallied to her defence amid a barrage of comments. One person enthused: "This collection is STUNNING @michkeegan." The horror incident involved a Gatwick-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner, ferrying 242 people, including 53 from the UK, which fatally plummeted soon after departing Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat. Mark faced a storm of criticism after sharing a photo on social media, where he was pictured alongside his wife Michelle Keegan and their daughter Palma in front of a private jet, complaining over the lack of legroom on commercial flights. Following a wave of backlash triggered by his upload, Mark took to Instagram with a public apology: "I apologise for a post I just put up on my page after today's heartbreaking events." Realising the insensitivity, he swiftly removed the controversial post and elaborated in his apology that it had been pre-scheduled before news of the tragedy broke. Explaining the sequence of events leading to the mishap, Mark stated: "I have posts from a holiday that are on the scheduled setting, which go out on future days I have set them for which was done last week." He continued: "It's a horrendous coincidence that today's post was on such a devastating day. Once I logged in to my Instagram and realised the post had gone out, I immediately deleted." Reflecting sincere remorse, Mark summed up: "My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected from today. I'm sorry for this mistake and any offence caused."
