Massachusetts mom hiking with children at ‘Purgatory Chasm' falls 75 feet to her death

Independent24-04-2025

A mother-of-four has died after falling 75 feet in an area known as Purgatory Chasm, while hiking with her children.
The 49-year-old woman, who was later named as Carrie Sanger, from Topsfield, Massachusetts, was out with three of her children when the tragic accident occurred on Wednesday.
Sutton Police Department said it received a 911 call at around 2 p.m. reporting that Sanger had fallen approximately 50-75 feet on the state reservation. Multiple medical professionals were reportedly hiking the Chasm at the same time as the incident, who provided medical attention immediately.
However, Sanger had succumbed to the injuries sustained during the fall and was pronounced deceased a short time later, police said. The department added that the investigation is ongoing, but the incident 'does appear to be accidental.'
A GoFundMe page, started on behalf of her family, described Sanger – who had recently left her career as an Oncology nurse to pursue her passion for wellness – as 'a bright light; a wonderful, selfless mother who has raised four incredible, respectful, responsible kids.'
'She was a friend to all and her smile and kind spirit will be greatly missed. She passed too early- but she left the earth doing what she loved, with the ones she loved.'
The post also noted that her husband, Mike Sanger, was the opposite of his wife and enjoyed a 'quiet but very proud life.'
Further information on the investigation will be released from the Worcester County District Attorney 's Office, the SPD said in a statement that went on to thank other local agencies.
'The Sutton Police Department would like to extend our condolences to the family during this very difficult time.'
"There are trails above the chasm you can go along, [and] dangerous overhangs if you're going to the edge to look down," hiker Andy Spears told WCVB. "It's really sad that it had to happen at a place like this."
Purgatory Chasm is described online as 'a unique natural landmark offering exciting adventure.' Trails on the reservation include rock formations such as The Corn Crib, The Coffin and Lovers' Leap.

Groom-to-be killed in horror e-scooter crash just 48 hours before his wedding

Scott Catton, 54, collided with a car door that suddenly swung open and was rushed to hospital - but tragically succumbed to his injuries just two days before his wedding A groom-to-be was killed in a devastating e-scooter crash just 48 hours before he was due to marry the love of his life. Scott Catton, 54, was riding through Top Valley, Nottingham, last Thursday (June 6) when he collided with a car door that suddenly swung open. He was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre with broken ribs and a severe brain bleed, but despite doctors' efforts, the father-of-one tragically died from his injuries on Saturday. Scott was set to marry his fiancée Debi on Monday and the couple had planned to fly off to Majorca for their honeymoon the following day. Instead, his family are now facing heartbreak and loss, as they rally around to raise funds for funeral costs and to support Debi and Scott's 13-year-old son. ‌ ‌ His brother in-law Philip Bates, 56, said: 'He was on his way home and on an electric scooter, someone opened a car door and he just hit it. He broke ribs, his collar bone and had a severe brain bleed. We went straight to the hospital where we spent most of the weekend. 'He was supposed to get married at Arnold Registry Office at 2pm yesterday. They were going to Majorca, they were supposed to fly out today. It's horrendous. It's never a good time, but this is the worst time though. He was the life and soul of the party, everyone loved him. 'He was a cheeky chap. He was massively into his sports and we both played football. He played for local teams, and played at veterans level. He loved his cricket and boxing. He went to Wembley to watch England and he recently went to watch the Eubank vs Benn fight. He was Nottingham Forest mad too. 'Because he wasn't married he's got money himself. To get it released is a long process, so the main aim is to pay for the funeral and take the strain off of his partner and give any money left over to his son. The main reason is to help his son out and give him something.' Philip has now set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs and to set up a trust for retired-EON advisor Scott's son. In a statement, the family said: 'Today (Saturday the 7th of June) we had to say goodbye to a much loved friend, partner, father, uncle and brother. 'Scott had a traffic accident from which he didn't recover. I am trying to raise funds to give him the send off that he deserves any remaining funds will be put into trust for his 13 year old son he leaves behind. Funeral arrangements will be posted in due course. He was due to marry his partner on Monday 9th June. We are all in deep shock please find it in your hearts to help.' More than £5,700 has been raised so far towards a £7,500 target. In response, the family said: 'We are truly humbled and grateful for all your generosity. It just shows how loved Scott was. I will keep the fund raising going to help Scott's son. Massive thanks to everyone who has donated and a special thanks to the Park Tavern and the Oxford public house who are organising fundraising events.' Nottinghamshire Police said officers were investigating the incident but were unable to provide any more information at this stage.

Teenage girl is killed in horror 4WD crash after camping trip with mates goes horribly wrong in long weekend tragedy

A teenage girl has died after a horrific 4WD accident while camping with friends over the long weekend. Caitlyn Bragger, 15, was in a Toyota LandCruiser with five other teens when it crashed near campgrounds at Lake Brockman, south of Perth, 8pm on Saturday. Western Australia Police said the teenagers had been camping in the area while a 16-year-old boy was behind the wheel at the time. Caitlyn died of her injuries at the scene. A 17-year-old boy and the driver were raced to Bunbury Regional Hospital. An 18-year-old boy and two 16-year-old girls also suffered minor injuries. Other nearby campers said they had seen the car's headlights moving through the trees before the crash. They then heard a 'loud bang' and a 'woman screaming'. Caitlyn's family said they were 'broken and in pieces' after losing their 'beautiful girl'. A GoFundMe has since been launched to help the family during their time of need. 'She bought a ray of sunshine everywhere she went, [she was] so outgoing and never left a dull moment in life,' the fundraiser read. 'Known for her kindness, unique sense of humour, and devotion to her family and friends. 'Her family are now left broken and in pieces, lost and confused. No one ever expects something like this to happen, you can't prepare yourself. 'Forever 15, forever in our memory and hearts. Our Angel In Heaven.' Some $9,000 had been raised for the family by Tuesday. Caitlyn's aunt Danica Pierce said her heart was 'seriously struggling to take all this pain'. 'You are going to be so missed, now an angel in heaven but way too young, my heart breaks,' she said. Witnesses at Lake Brockman said the LandCruiser had been crumpled in the crash. One of the boys who rushed to the group's aid, Jett, said it was a confronting sight. 'When I walked up there, there was a massive four-wheel-drive that had been smashed like a tin can, it was scary to see,' he told the ABC. 'There (were) so many people running towards the car and trying to help but there's only so much you can do in that situation.' His friend Rocquo said he managed to pull a rear door from the car to free a male passenger, but felt helpless after seeing the car's roof caved in at its front end. 'It was a shock because you feel hopeless because you can't do anything and we were trying to pick the roof up and we were trying to get everyone out but you can't do anything and it's just sad,' he said. Major Crash investigators continued to examine the scene with WA Police on Monday. Officers appealed for anybody with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward. In Western Australia, drivers cannot obtain a provisional driving permit until they are 17 years of age.
