150 arrested in London for backing banned pro-Palestinian group amid protests
London's Metropolitan Police posted in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter that officers are steadily working through the crowd making further arrests.
Backers of Palestine Action have staged a series of protests across the UK since early July, when Parliament outlawed the group and prohibited anyone from publicly showing support for it. Lawmakers banned the group as a terrorist organization after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and vandalized two tanker aircraft.
Protesters gathered Saturday afternoon in the square outside Parliament, with dozens displaying signs reading 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.' That was enough for police to step in.
'Within this crowd a significant number of people are displaying placards expressing support for Palestine Action, which is a proscribed group,' the Metropolitan Police Service said on X. 'Officers have moved in and are making arrests.'

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a British air force base in southern England on June 20 to protest British military support for Israel's war with Hamas. The activists sprayed red paint into the engines of two tanker planes at the RAF Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire and caused further damage with crowbars.
Palestine Action had previously targeted Israeli defence contractors and other sites in Britain that they believe have links with the Israeli military.
Supporters of the group are challenging the ban in court, saying the government has gone too far in declaring Palestine Action a terrorist organization.
'Once the meaning of 'terrorism' is separated from campaigns of violence against a civilian population, and extended to include those causing economic damage or embarrassment to the rich, the powerful and the criminal, then the right to freedom of expression has no meaning and democracy is dead,' the group Defend Our Juries said on its website.
The arrests outside Parliament came amid what is expected to be a busy weekend of demonstrations in London as the war in Gaza and concerns about immigration spur protests and counter-protests across the United Kingdom.
While Prime Minister Keir Starmer has angered Israel with plans to recognize a Palestinian state later this year, many Palestinian supporters in Britain criticize the government for not doing enough to end the war in Gaza.
Pro-Palestinian protesters were gathering Saturday afternoon in central London for a march that is scheduled to end outside the gates of No. 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's official residence and offices.

On Sunday, a number of groups are scheduled to march through central London to demand the safe release of the Israeli hostages in Gaza. Palestinian militants have held the captives since they attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
Police are also preparing for protests outside hotels across the country that are being used to house asylum seekers. Protesters and counter-protesters have squared off outside the hotels in recent weeks, with some saying the migrants pose a risk to their communities and others decrying anti-immigrant racism.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said the scale of the events would 'put pressure' on the police department.
'This is going to be a particularly busy few days in London with many simultaneous protests and events that will require a significant policing presence,' Adelekan said before the protests began.

Israel Defence Minister clashes with IDF Chief over senior military appointments
Tel Aviv, Aug 12 (UNI) Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had a public dispute with Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir late yesterday over senior appointments in the military, as per Times of Israel. A media leak prior to the announcement of the appointments led to Katz' row with Zamir, with the Defence Minister slamming the military chief in a public statement. Katz said the meeting held by Zamir was conducted 'contrary to the defence minister's directive and without prior coordination and agreement, in violation of established procedure.' Katz added he had 'no intention of discussing or approving any of the appointments or names' that were leaked. 'The Chief of Staff will be required to coordinate in advance with the defence minister in order to discuss these or other appointments in the future,' he said. Noting that the Defence Ministry was superior to the military in authority, and that the IDF was subordinate to its policies, Zamir hit back at the office after announcing the appointments. Releasing a statement from the IDF, Zamir said that 'staffing discussion was scheduled in advance, in accordance with regulations.' 'The chief of staff is the sole authority under regulations for appointing commanders at the rank of colonel and above in the IDF. The chief of staff holds an orderly staffing discussion with the participation of the General Staff forum,' the military said in the statement. 'The chief of staff decides on the appointments, after which the appointment goes to the (defence) minister for approval, who may approve or not approve the appointment,' the IDF added. The spat between the two carried over on Tuesday, with Katz releasing another statement, insisting that he would follow the accepted procedures. 'Since these are joint appointments by the Defence Minister and the IDF chief of staff, there is an accepted procedure for appointments of ranks colonel and up in the IDF,' Katz said. 'No discussion of IDF shakeups is held before the accepted procedure is carried out.' Katz said he has 'clarified to the chief of staff that he needs more time and the discussion must not be held at this time,' adding that he will 'weigh whether to promote senior officers on the Gaza front who haven't served the accepted timeframe for their roles to other roles before the task of defeating Hamas in Gaza has been completed.' Katz also said he will examine whether to promote officers who served as commanders on the Gaza front during the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, or whose names were linked to 'irregular incidents in the past.' 'The military echelon is subordinate to the defence minister and will act in accordance with his orders and the policy he will set,' he stressed. UNI ANV SSP

Voter list war: Poll panel vs Opposition over 'vote chori' allegations
The political war of words continues regarding the voter list controversy, with opposition MPs staging protests outside Parliament. The INDIA bloc, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, wore 'Minta Devi' T-shirts, referring to a voter in Bihar listed as 124 years old, who was later found to be 35. Controversy also erupted after the Congress shared a 'Vote Chori' campaign video featuring actor KK Menon, who refuted his willing participation. The opposition alleges the Election Commission of India is not enforcing 'one man one vote' and stated, "ECI is BJP." The Supreme Court observed that the poll body was correct in not accepting Aadhaar card as proof of citizenship during the special intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar. The Election Commission also called out opposition parties for not filing objections to the revised voter list. The BJP has defended the Election Commission, calling the opposition's actions a 'tamasha'.
