Students in Philly technical education program graduate, join workforce

Yahoo2 days ago

The Brief
The School District of Philadelphia offers a program that graduates seniors into the workforce.
The Career and Technical Education program creates career and a jobs pipeline.
200 students are enrolled.
FELTONVILLE - It's a big week for area students who are marking a milestone. Thousands of high school seniors are getting their diplomas this week. Many are headed to college, but some have already entered the workforce and are getting a start in the real world.
What we know
While thousands of Philadelphia high school graduates get ready for a summer down the shore or preparing for college, there are some who are already getting a paycheck.
Just two days after high school graduation, Adryanna Day is already at her full-time job as an apprentice mechanic with the City of Philadelphia Department of Fleet Services.
"I've always loved motorcycles. A lot of my family are bikers. Especially Harley's," said Day.
The 18-year-old from Mt. Airy is now getting paid to help repair motorcycles, including Harley Davidsons.
The backstory
Her career actually started in 10th grade through the School District of Philadelphia's Career and Technical Education program at Randolph Technical High School.
"You have to be determined. You have to want this. You will be tired. You will be sore. There will be days you don't want to come to work, but I love doing what I do," said Day.
Along with regular classwork the program gives students intensive hands-on instruction in 48 different career paths, including construction, culinary arts, health technology or, in the case of Fidel Rodriguez, auto body repair. He graduated Wednesday. By Friday, he was busy fixing police cars, ambulances and fire trucks.
"It prepares you to go into a field with a trade on hand already," said Rodriguez.
He's one of more than 200 CTE students in 10th through 12th grades getting direct pipelines to careers fresh out of high school.
"I've always wanted to do something with cars. I wanted to be around cars. And when the opportunity came, I took it" added Rodriguez.
Big picture view
But landing a job right out of high school doesn't mean students don't go to college. In fact both students say college is still in the plans.
"I will be studying at CCP for criminal justice, so eventually I would love to be a homicide detective. Still working with the police, still working with all of this in a way," said Day.
For Rodriguez, he's planning to open up his own auto body shop someday.
"I would love to go to a four-year college. I am planning to go to CCP as well to get my Associates. But I want to get into the workforce and get that experience early on. Be hands-on. And the paycheck's pretty," said Rodriguez.

British carmaker JLR trims FY26 margin forecast to 5%-7% as US tariffs cast shadow

(Reuters) -British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover cut its fiscal 2026 earnings before interest and taxes margins forecast to 5%-7% on Monday from 10% earlier, citing uncertainty in the global auto industry as U.S. tariffs loom. Shares in the company's Indian parent Tata Motors dropped as much as 4.7% in early trade after the announcement. JLR's EBIT margin forecast was also below its reported margin of 8.5% for the previous fiscal year. JLR, which gets over a quarter of its sales from the U.S., had temporarily paused shipments to the country after its President Donald Trump slapped a 25% duty on all foreign-made vehicles sold in the world's second-largest car market. Tata Motors' ownership of JLR makes it among the most exposed Indian automakers to Trump's tariffs on vehicle imports. Unlike most of its rivals, including German brands Mercedes- Benz and BMW, JLR has no manufacturing presence in the U.S. Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

IndyCar Bommarito Automotive Grand Prix results: Kyle Kirkwood earns third win of the season at St. Louis

Kyle Kirkwood picks up his 2nd consecutive win and 3rd this IndyCar Series season, holding off Pato O'Ward and Christian Rasmussen in the Bommarito Automotive 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Kirkwood has the best final pit stop in the 260-lap event on the 1.25-mile track, getting the advantage on O'Ward and Scott Dixon for the final stint. O'Ward finishes one-half second back, and Rasmussen less than 1 second behind. Advertisement "I'm over the moon right now," Kirkwood told the Fox broadcast in pit lane. That's Kirkwood's first career oval victory. Series points leader Alex Palou, who has 5 race wins, finishes 8th. Rasmussen, who started 25th and whose car briefly had flames coming from the rear during a pit stop, makes an incredible 71 on-track passes. Next was Conor Daly, the 6th-place finisher, with 38 on-track passes. "Definitely the best race of my life so far," Rasmussen said. Team Penske's drivers all exit early. Pole-sitter Will Power finishes 27th after a crash; Josef Newgarden is 25th after going upside down after getting caught by Louis Foster's spinning car; and Scott McLaughlin is 24th after a tire issue. ‘That's Not Normal:' Woman's 2014 Honda Civic Keeps Stalling at Red Lights. Then She Asks for Help

A woman turns to TikTok for answers about an issue with her 2014 Honda Civic, and—for once —the internet offers simple, actionable advice. TikTok user Sari (@sarisahara) posted a video with her question recently. She starts the video by saying, 'So I need a car person to tell me what's going on with my car, because I'm not really sure and I just want to know what kind of fix this is going to be and what it's going to cost to get fixed.' She explains that she's the owner of a 2014 Honda Civic . Approximately five or six times, she's been stopped at a red light or a stop sign and found herself stuck when she lets go of the brake. When she hits the gas, the Civic stops moving, and she gets an alert to turn the car on. 'But I can't turn the car on, because it's already on,' she states. 'So I hit the button a few times so it moves again.' She closes the video by saying, 'Obviously that's not normal. And I just don't know what could be causing that. So if someone could explain that to me, that would be super helpful. And about how much it's going to cost to get that fixed.' 'Start Small and Cheap' Several users offered quick, easy fixes to at least eliminate the obvious, such as changing the batteries on her key fob. If the battery is out, then the car may not recognize it as in the vehicle. 'Start with basics. It could just need a tune up. Worn spark plugs can cause low idle and bad acceleration,' another user added. The 2014 Honda Civic is equipped with an engine start/stop button, which lets you get into the car, start the engine, turn it off, and lock and unlock it—all with just the press of a few buttons. If you have the fob on you, then you don't need a key to do any of that. This feature should not be confused with auto start/stop , which is a technology that starts and stops your car's engine as a way of improving fuel efficiency. So What's Actually Wrong With Her 2014 Honda Civic? In the comments of the TikTok video, a few viewers offered what could be helpful advice. 'Could be a few things ranging from electrical to crankshaft to even the fuel system,' wrote one helpful viewer and self-described Honda guy. 'I wish I could give you a price estimate, but it ranges!' More From Motor1 'Never Knew This:' Honda Civic Driver of 3 Years Reaches for Key Fob. Then She Realizes It Has a Little-Known Feature 'I'm Not [an] Expert:' Man Gets in a Honda Civic. Then It Starts Making This Mystery Noise When He Puts It in Reverse Another user agreed that the cost could vary widely. 'Could be a simple relay ruse,' they wrote. '$20. Or it could be an electrical or control module. $2,000. Being that it's random, it's going to be hard to trace unless there are stored codes that give some indication.' Someone else put it this way. 'You know who could tell you this? A mechanic.' It's Not Just Her This doesn't appear to be an uncommon problem. Last year, a 2014 Honda Civic owner wrote to the Car Problem Fix and Help Group on Facebook about a similar issue. 'It won't turn on,' he wrote. I changed the start/stop switch, but it still won't turn on. It also has a new battery.' One person replied, 'You might need to tell the computer that you changed the button over.' Motor1 reached out to Sari via TikTok for comment. We'll update this article when we hear back.
