Terre Haute Chamber testifies in support of military base grant program
The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and its West Central Defense Network initiative offered testimony Thursday at the Indiana Statehouse in support of funding that could be used to support Indiana's military bases, including the 181st Intelligence Wing in Terre Haute.
The Indiana Military Base Infrastructure Grant Program would provide for an annual $25 million fund to be administered by the Indiana Defense Task Force.
'The allocation of these funds are an investment in Indiana's future, not an expense, with great potential for high returns from new economic opportunities created as a result,' Chamber President and CEO Kristin Craig said in a news release.
'The 181st Intelligence Wing plays a vital role in national security, employing around 500 personnel with Top Secret clearances and working in cutting-edge fields like cybersecurity, intelligence analysis and geospatial technologies.'
According to additional testimony provided during Thursday's hearing, military-focused economic development groups warned that not investing in such facilities could put Indiana at risk of 'Base Realignment and Closure,' a process where the Department of Defense may close select military installations.
'This base is more than just a military installation — it's a critical economic driver that supports hundreds of high-tech, high-paying jobs and strengthens our local economy. These are exactly the kinds of jobs we need more of in Indiana — high-skill, high-wage positions that keep our best and brightest in the state,' Craig said.
'For us to continue to attract and retain talent, which allows us to attract new defense missions, private investment and new federal contracts that create more of these opportunities, we must ensure the 181st Intelligence Wing has modern, reliable infrastructure, capable of meeting the needs of current military strategies.

New Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visits Ukraine for first time
June 11 (UPI) -- Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will mark his first-ever official visit to Ukraine on Wednesday since he took the presidency nearly eights years ago to take part in a European summit. Vucic will pay a one-day visit to Serbia's war-torn northern neighbor, where he will participate in the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit in Odesa, the Serbian presidential office announced. Few official details were shared. Meanwhile, it's expected to gather representatives from a dozen southeastern European nations, including newly-elected Romanian President Nicusor Dan, who is also on his first visit to Ukraine since his own election win last month. European political experts say Vucic's presence signals an EU-realignment for Serbia, which has largely remained neutral, with respect to Russia's full-scale invasion and war in Ukraine. In recent months, Russia and Serbia's long-existing diplomatic ties have been strained. Vucic took sharp criticism from EU officials regarding Serbia's bid to enter the 27-member European Union after his recent trip to Moscow on May 9 for President Vladimir Putin's military parade as one of few European leaders to attend. It arrived as three people were killed and 68 others injured overnight after Russian forces hit civilian targets across the frontline regions of Kharkiv and Kherson.

Andy Kim endorses Angie Craig in Minnesota Senate race
Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) is backing Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) in the Democratic primary to replace retiring Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.), making Kim the latest Democratic senator to back the congresswoman. 'In a time when Democracy is under attack and working families are being squeezed from all sides, we need bold, principled leaders who won't back down from a fight,' Kim said in a statement shared through Craig's campaign, which was first shared with The Hill. 'I'm proud to endorse Angie Craig,' he continued. 'Angie's commitment to fighting for the middle class by lowering costs and standing up to the status quo to fix a broken Washington is exactly what the Senate needs right now.' Craig in her own statement said she was 'grateful' to have his backing. 'Senator Kim is a good friend and understands the kind of hard work it takes to stand up to Washington's corruption,' she said. Craig and Kim both started in the House in 2019, though Kim now serves in the Senate after winning former Sen. Bob Menendez's (I) seat in November. Kim is the latest senator to back Craig; Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), who also won his Senate seat last year, is endorsing the Minnesota Democrat, too. Several other Democrats are running for the Democratic nod for Smith's seat: Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who's received endorsements from state Attorney General Keith Ellison and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Democratic candidate Billy Nord. A handful of Republicans are also running for the seat, including Senate candidates Royce White and Mike Ruoho in addition to retired Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze. The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates Smith's seat 'lean Democrat.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
