BMTC rolls out ‘OnBoard' assistive device for visually impaired city bus commuters

The Hindu12-07-2025
In a step toward inclusive public transportation, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has begun deploying an innovative device called 'OnBoard' to assist visually impaired commuters in navigating city buses with greater ease and independence.
The technology, developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in partnership with the Raised Lines Foundation (RLF), is being implemented with the support of Continental Automotive Components India Pvt. Ltd. and Enable India, according to BMTC.
Officials said that it aims to eliminate the need for visually impaired individuals to rely on bystanders at bus stops, thus reducing mental stress and improving self-confidence.
Speaking about the initiative, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, 'The OnBoard system is a progressive step toward empowering visually impaired citizens to travel with dignity and independence.'
How it works
The OnBoard solution uses a two-part communication system: a handheld remote with the commuter and a receiver unit installed in BMTC buses, fixed on the lower front glass near the entry door.
When a bus approaches, the visually impaired commuter presses a 'Find' button on the remote, prompting the bus to announce its route number through a speaker. If the bus matches the desired route, the commuter presses 'Select,' alerting the driver and conductor that a visually impaired passenger is preparing to board. 'This ensures a longer halt for safer boarding. The same method is used for disembarkation as the passenger nears their destination,' Mr. Reddy said.
Some of the key features of the device include: Alerting users when a selected bus is within a 30-meter radius, ensuring safe and guided boarding and alighting, weather-resistant design, tested for durability in rain, dust, and heat.
Pilot project shows promise
The pilot project began with 25 BMTC buses operating on routes 401K and 242B, which visually impaired passengers frequently use. 'As part of the pilot, 500 users received hands-on training, with 25 individuals actively testing the system. Feedback from these users was overwhelmingly positive. Many reported increased confidence, less anxiety while commuting, and a significantly improved experience,' the Minister said.
Encouraged by this, BMTC approved the installation of OnBoard devices in 500 buses across Bengaluru, with the next 100 devices being installed from June 2025. Full deployment is expected by August 2025.
Implementation strategy and routes covered
According to BMTC, initial integration of the device required several modifications to ensure compatibility with existing bus systems. After technical adjustments and server integration, installation began on 125 diesel buses across five routes: 401K (Yelahanka to Kengeri), 401R (Yelahanka to Kengeri), 401M (Yeshwanthpur to Kengeri), 410FA (Yeshwanthpur to Banashankari TTMC), 410FG (Yeshwanthpur to Nayandahalli Metro Station).
According to BMTC officials, this initiative has not only earned praise locally but has also begun attracting interest from other states exploring similar solutions. 'We're seeing a national shift in how we approach public transport infrastructure for persons with disabilities,' said an official from BMTC.
Prashanth Doreswamy, president and CEO of Continental, said, 'We believe that mobility must be inclusive and accessible. This partnership with BMTC is a testament to what technology can do when it is driven by a sense of social responsibility.'
The Minister said, 'We urge other transport agencies and departments across the country to take note and implement similar solutions to ensure no one is left behind.'

IIT-K develops 3 assistivetechs for ‘special' people

Lucknow: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, has developed three revolutionary assistive technologies — a Haptic Smartwatch, Assistive App for Dyslexia and Dysgraphia (AACDD) and Single Refreshable Braille Cell Learning Device — to support the visually impaired and children with learning disabilities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This was informed by Prof Siddhartha Panda from the department of chemical engineering, IIT-Kanpur. He was speaking at the Regional Abilympics and Conference 2025 held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre on Friday. He said that Haptic Smartwatch is designed for people who are blind or have low vision. "Unlike regular smartwatches that give audio alerts, this one uses gentle vibrations that users can feel on their wrist. It tells the time and notifies users through two simple touch patterns, making it private and easy to use even in public," he said. The watch, developed by Prof. Siddhartha Panda and Vishwaraj Srivastava of IIT-K, also tracks steps, heart rate, reminds the user to drink water, and sets timers with a simple double-tap. Similarly, the Assistive App for Dyslexia and Dysgraphia (AACDD) is a Hindi learning app made for children with reading and writing difficulties. It helps kids from classes 1 to 5 using a fun, three-level method. The app, developed by Prof Braj Bhushan, Prof Shatarupa Thakurta Roy, and Dr Alok Bajpai, teaches 120 Hindi words in an engaging way. The Single Refreshable Braille Cell Learning Device helps blind students learn Braille more easily. It has a single Braille cell (raised dots) that learners can touch and feel. It also gives feedback while the user interacts with it, helping them learn each character one by one. The device, developed by Prof. Siddhartha Panda and Vishwaraj Srivastava, is simple, affordable, and ideal for those who have just started with Braille.

ChatGPT is second most-used tool for learning new skills for students at IIT Bombay

ChatGPT, the popular generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot, has emerged as the second most-used tool for learning new skills among students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay—after online platforms like Coursera. This was revealed as Insight – the institute's official student media body, released its Senior Survey 2025 report on Friday. The findings are based on responses from 282 students. Of the 272 students who answered the question, 'How did you generally study/learn new skills in the institute?', 118 cited online platforms, while 65 mentioned ChatGPT. Only 9 students said they used library books—the traditional method of learning new things in university settings. Despite AI tools becoming prevalent in university settings, ChatGPT remains underutilized in certain areas. Out of 138 respondents to the question on – in which situations have you not used ChatGPT ever – 89 said that they have not used it for resume-making. Whereas only 46 said that they have not used it for assignments and projects. As respondents of the Senior Survey are soon to enter the workforce, it is important to note that 'work-life balance' and 'a career aligned with one's skill set' have emerged as top priorities—ranking higher than financial compensation. Factors like location of posting and work culture were deemed less important. Among 269 respondents for a question on important factors to consider when choosing career – 29.4 percent ranked work-life balance highest. Separately, over 40 percent of 262 respondents said a career aligned with their skill set was most important. Contrary to the perception that IIT Bombay students often move away from core engineering, the survey shows that out of the 282 students who responded to the question on their immediate plans after graduation – 67 said they would continue in core engineering, while 66 planned to stay in technology. When asked about interest in their core branch, 135 of 277 respondents said they were and still are inclined to pursue it. However, 58 said they had lost interest, while 65 admitted they were never inclined in their field of study. Whereas 19 students said that they were not interested in their core branch before but are now keen to pursue.
