Mark Hughes stays at Carlisle United as head coach
Mark Hughes is staying at Carlisle United.
The Blues have announced that the head coach has agreed to remain in charge ahead of the 2025/26 season.
It follows more than two weeks of talks since the end of the season that saw the Cumbrians relegated to the National League.
The 61-year-old will now lead United's bid to bounce back next season.
"I'm thrilled to be staying at the club," said Hughes in a statement.
"Since joining back in February, the support I've received from the fans has been exceptional - thank you.
"I hope to see more of the same next season as we aim for an immediate return to the EFL."
Owner Tom Piatak added: "Mark brought the squad together during the closing stretch of the season and gave us a fighting chance.
"His leadership, composure, and connection with the players was clear, and we're confident in his ability to lead us forward.'

Hughes was brought in as United's third boss of the season in February after the successive departures of Paul Simpson and Mike Williamson.
He was unable to keep the Cumbrians in the EFL but earned popularity with many fans for his approach and an improvement in results.
The experienced former Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Bradford City boss was at the helm for 18 games, winning five, drawing six and losing seven.
United's statement does not clarify Hughes' backroom staff but it will be expected that his No2, Glyn Hodges, will remain.
Clarity is also awaited on the rest of his coaching team, with Jamie Devitt having acted as first-team coach during Hughes' tenure last season.
Confirmation of Hughes' retention came hours after Carlisle announced the departure of head of recruitment Greg Abbott.
It also follows the departure of Rob Clarkson as sporting director, and last week's appointment of Marc Tierney as head of football operations.
Hughes and Tierney will now be expected to work closely in an attempt to reverse Carlisle's decline on the pitch after back-to-back relegations.
The Blues are preparing to play in the fifth tier for only the second time.
The news on Hughes comes some 23 days after United's relegation was confirmed, and 16 days after the final game of the 2024/25 campaign.
Hughes is understood to have been away on holiday for some of the intervening period, while Blues owner Tom Piatak had stressed that talks with the Welshman were "ongoing" during that period as United sought a resolution.

It was scrapped the following year due to cost. The United Airlines flight took place on U.S. President Donald Trump's 79th birthday, which was being celebrated in Washington with a controversial military parade that's part of the Army's long-planned 250th anniversary celebration. Trump has repeatedly said he seeks control of Greenland, a strategic Arctic island that's a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, and has not ruled out military force. The governments of Denmark, a NATO ally, and Greenland have said it is not for sale and condemned reports of the U.S. stepping up intelligence gathering on the mineral-rich island. United announced the flight in October, before Trump was re-elected. It was scheduled for 2025 to take advantage of the new Nuuk airport, which opened in late November and features a larger runway for bigger jets. Previously, travelers had to take a layover in Iceland or Copenhagen, Denmark, before flying to Greenland. The new flight is beneficial for the island's business and residents, according to Greenland government minister Naaja Nathanielsen. Tourists will spend money at local businesses, and Greenlanders themselves will now be able to travel to the U.S. more easily, Nathanielsen, the minister for business, mineral resources, energy, justice and gender equality, told Danish broadcaster DR. The route is also an important part of diversifying the island's economy, she said. Fishing produces about 90% of Greenland's exports. Tourism is increasingly important. More than 96,000 international passengers traveled through the country's airports in 2023, up 28% from 2015. Visit Greenland echoed Nathanielsen's comments. The government's tourism agency did not have projections on how much money the new flights would bring to the island. Bowling club members celebrate 125th anniversary in style
A bowling club in Carlisle has been celebrating its 125th anniversary with a special event. Courtfield bowling club first opened its doors on June 7, 1900 and has been a fixture in the city's sporting scene ever since. On Saturday, June 7 more than seventy members and friends attended Courtfield Bowling Club to celebrate the special event in the club's history. Members of the club got in the sprit of the event and arrived wearing Victorian era style clothes to help celebrate the anniversary. Club members in Victorian dress (Image: Supplied) Just before the end of the 19th century there had been a growing demand to increase the number of bowling clubs in the city. Discussions had taken place about forming a new club at least two or three years prior to the actual opening. The land on which it is built had previously been occupied by market gardens, owned by the Duke of Devonshire, and these extended from Courtfield Crescent all the way down to the river Eden. Permission had to be granted by the Duke and then passed through Parliament before construction could start. 'We're a very welcoming club,' said club member Tony Jackson. After a long Super Rugby season, a final that seemed inevitable
Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — After 77 matches in the regular season and five more in the playoffs, Super Rugby has thrown up the final that seemed obvious since the tournament began. The Hamilton-based Chiefs who finished the regular season in first place will face the second-placed Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday. The Crusaders gained top-seeding when the Chiefs lost to the Blues in the first playoff round and will host the final for a record eighth time. Through the ups and downs of the season, the Chiefs and Crusaders clearly established themselves as the two best teams in Super Rugby with matching 11-3 records in the normal season. The Crusaders beat the Queensland Reds and Auckland-based Blues in the playoffs while the Chiefs lost to the Blues and beat the ACT Brumbies after advancing to the semifinals as the top-ranked quarterfinal loser. After their 21-14 win over the Blues on Saturday, the Crusaders will defend a 31-0 record in home playoffs in the final. The Chiefs will be playing in the final for the third-straight year after losing to the Crusaders in 2023 and the Blues in 2024. The Crusaders will attempt to win the title for the 13th time in full Super Rugby competitions — they won twice in regional tournaments during the COVID pandemic. The Chiefs will attempt to win for the third time, the first since 2013. Penney's redemption Last year, in their first season under head coach Rob Penney, the Crusaders won only four matches in one of their worst-ever seasons. The Crusaders' management decided to keep Penney on and this year he has led them to the final. When asked how he would celebrate the semifinal win over the Blues, Penney replied 'very quietly. After leading 19-17, the Chiefs scored 18 unanswered points to close out the match. 'It was an outstanding performance from the lads,' McKenzie said. 'The Brumbies came out of the blocks fast as we knew they would and I liked the way we were really composed and stuck to our game.' McKenzie kept the ball in front of the Chiefs' forwards while the Brumbies suffered a major blow when Wallabies flyhalf Noah Lolesio failed a head injury assessment in the 11th minute. Once again, the Brumbies fell just short of the title game after reaching the semifinals in each of the last three years. Australian teams are now 0-21 in playoff matches in New Zealand. 'There's frustration because it's the same story as last year,' Larkham said. 'We've had this story for more than two years in a row now.
