Metz captain Udol is refusing to train and wants to leave his hometown club
Udol was born in Metz and has played almost his entire career for his hometown club, making 185 appearances since 2015 as a solid left back. But he did not turn up when preseason training began on Monday, putting coach Stéphane Le Mignan in a difficult spot.
'We're disappointed that he's not with us, and it's upsetting because he's our captain,' Le Mignan said on Tuesday at a news conference. 'I spoke to him on the phone before the restart and he told me he wanted to leave. It's not a pleasant situation, but we're here to move forward, so I'm focusing on the pitch and the players who want to work.'
Udol has two years left on his contract and Metz could make some much-needed money selling him with budgets restricted amid low TV revenue this season. Le Mignan is feeling somewhat torn, though, saying Metz stuck by Udol through several knee injuries.
'We have a player who has been loyal to the club, but the club has also been loyal (to him) in difficult situations,' Le Mignan said.
'I have discussed this with the president of course, because it is very important both from a sporting and financial point of view. I don't know how the situation will develop.'
Midfielder Gauthier Hein, the club's key player when it won a relegation-promotion playoff against Reims in May to earn promotion, is also caught in two minds.
'We need Matthieu in the team this season and we would be very happy if he stayed,' Hein said. 'But as his best friend, I also have to think about his wellbeing as a person (and) I want him to flourish, no matter where.'

Rain puts Manitoba Open on hold until Friday
A massive late-summer thunderstorm has delayed the start of the Manitoba Open. Play was scheduled to begin early Thursday morning at Breezy Bend Country Club, but heavy overnight rain left the course too saturated for the 156 competitors to tee off. The opening round is now set to begin Friday at 7:30 a.m. Officials still hope to complete all 72 holes of the PGA Tour Americas event by late Sunday afternoon — weather permitting. The field will be cut to the top 60 players and ties after two rounds. Two Manitobans are in the field: Braxton Kuntz of Winnipeg and Evan Nachtigall of Brandon. Winnipeg Jets goaltender Eric Comrie is also competing on a sponsor's exemption. More information about the tournament, including ticket details, can be found at Admission is free for spectators under 18. Marseille puts Rabiot and Rowe on transfer list for reported locker room fight
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Marseille's season is already in turmoil after France midfielder Adrien Rabiot and England Under-21 forward Jonathan Rowe were put on the transfer list Tuesday and told to leave the club for 'unacceptable behavior.' The pair reportedly argued and fought in the locker room after Friday's 1-0 loss to Rennes, which prevailed with a stoppage-time goal despite being down to 10 players in their Ligue 1 season opener. Marseille's move puts doubt into team-building plans for coach Roberto De Zerbi just one week before the 1993 Champions League winner takes part in the draw for this season's competition. 'This decision was taken due to unacceptable behavior in the dressing room after the match against Rennes,' Marseille said in a statement. Rabiot and Rowe have been exiled 'in agreement with the technical staff and in accordance with the club's internal code of conduct,' said the club whose majority owner is American businessman Frank McCourt, the former Los Angeles Dodgers owner. Marseille qualified for the Champions League by finishing runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 in De Zerbi's first season at the club. The 30-year-old joined as a free agent last September after his contract expired at Juventus. Weeks earlier, Rowe had moved from English second-tier Norwich on an initial loan deal that was made permanent before this season. The transfer window in Europe closes Sept. 1. ___ AP soccer:

PSG begins Ligue 1 title defence with a win at Nantes
Portugal midfielder Vitinha broke the deadlock with the aid of a lucky deflection as Paris Saint-Germain began its Ligue 1 title defence with an unconvincing 1-0 win at Nantes on Sunday. Champions League winner PSG looked short of ideas, just as it had for long spells against Europa League champion Tottenham during the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday. Vitinha collected the ball about 20 metres out and his strike clipped defender Chidozie Awaziem as he tried to duck under the ball, before wrong-footing goalkeeper Anthony Lopes in the 67th minute. That proved enough for coach Luis Enrique's side, which was again without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italy No. 1 wants to leave PSG after it bought Lucas Chevalier from Lille and has been linked with a move to Manchester City. A scrappy first half saw little creativity, and neither Chevalier or Lopes had much to do. Nantes coach Luis Castro may regret leaving his best striker, Matthis Abline, on the bench until the 60th minute. Abline is pursuing a move away from Nantes, which looked much sharper when he came on. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud took only 11 minutes to score on his return to Ligue 1, but it was not enough as his new side Lille drew 3-3 at Brest. Giroud was picked out by Felix Correia's clever pass behind the defence and finished with a left-footed shot under the goalkeeper. The 38-year-old Giroud became Lille's oldest scorer in Ligue 1 and he lasted the whole game. 'It was a special moment for me and I'm happy to be back in Ligue 1,' Giroud told broadcaster DAZN. 'The coach asked me several times how I was feeling and I said I wanted to play until the end.' Midfielder Hakon Arnar Haraldsson made it 2-0 before Kamory Doumbia scored twice to level the match. Lille regained the lead midway through the second half when Ngal'ayel Mukau scored following a corner, but Julien Le Cardinal equalized. Striker Esteban Lepaul's early goal was enough for Angers to win 1-0 at home to newly promoted Paris FC despite having midfielder Louis Mouton sent off in the 57th. Striker Lassine Sinayoko scored early in the second half as Auxerre won 1-0 at home against Lorient, which was promoted as Ligue 2 winner. Metz started with 16-year-old prospect Brian Madjo in attack but conceded a late goal in a 1-0 home loss to Strasbourg. New signing Joaquin Panichelli scored for the visitors. Giroud joined Lille after a disappointing spell with Los Angeles FC. He previously made his name with AC Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal — the club he joined from Montpellier after winning the French title in 2012 and scoring 21 league goals that season. Giroud is France's all-time leading men's scorer with 57 goals and won the 2018 World Cup with Les Bleus. 'I wanted to challenge myself one more time,' Giroud said.
