Metz captain Udol is refusing to train and wants to leave his hometown club
Udol was born in Metz and has played almost his entire career for his hometown club, making 185 appearances since 2015 as a solid left back. But he did not turn up when preseason training began on Monday, putting coach Stéphane Le Mignan in a difficult spot.
'We're disappointed that he's not with us, and it's upsetting because he's our captain,' Le Mignan said on Tuesday at a news conference. 'I spoke to him on the phone before the restart and he told me he wanted to leave. It's not a pleasant situation, but we're here to move forward, so I'm focusing on the pitch and the players who want to work.'
Udol has two years left on his contract and Metz could make some much-needed money selling him with budgets restricted amid low TV revenue this season. Le Mignan is feeling somewhat torn, though, saying Metz stuck by Udol through several knee injuries.
'We have a player who has been loyal to the club, but the club has also been loyal (to him) in difficult situations,' Le Mignan said.
'I have discussed this with the president of course, because it is very important both from a sporting and financial point of view. I don't know how the situation will develop.'
Midfielder Gauthier Hein, the club's key player when it won a relegation-promotion playoff against Reims in May to earn promotion, is also caught in two minds.
'We need Matthieu in the team this season and we would be very happy if he stayed,' Hein said. 'But as his best friend, I also have to think about his wellbeing as a person (and) I want him to flourish, no matter where.'

Rain puts Manitoba Open on hold until Friday

Marseille puts Rabiot and Rowe on transfer list for reported locker room fight
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Marseille's season is already in turmoil after France midfielder Adrien Rabiot and England Under-21 forward Jonathan Rowe were put on the transfer list Tuesday and told to leave the club for 'unacceptable behavior.' The pair reportedly argued and fought in the locker room after Friday's 1-0 loss to Rennes, which prevailed with a stoppage-time goal despite being down to 10 players in their Ligue 1 season opener. Marseille's move puts doubt into team-building plans for coach Roberto De Zerbi just one week before the 1993 Champions League winner takes part in the draw for this season's competition. 'This decision was taken due to unacceptable behavior in the dressing room after the match against Rennes,' Marseille said in a statement. Rabiot and Rowe have been exiled 'in agreement with the technical staff and in accordance with the club's internal code of conduct,' said the club whose majority owner is American businessman Frank McCourt, the former Los Angeles Dodgers owner. Marseille qualified for the Champions League by finishing runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 in De Zerbi's first season at the club. PSG begins Ligue 1 title defence with a win at Nantes
Portugal midfielder Vitinha broke the deadlock with the aid of a lucky deflection as Paris Saint-Germain began its Ligue 1 title defence with an unconvincing 1-0 win at Nantes on Sunday. Champions League winner PSG looked short of ideas, just as it had for long spells against Europa League champion Tottenham during the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday. Vitinha collected the ball about 20 metres out and his strike clipped defender Chidozie Awaziem as he tried to duck under the ball, before wrong-footing goalkeeper Anthony Lopes in the 67th minute. That proved enough for coach Luis Enrique's side, which was again without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italy No. 1 wants to leave PSG after it bought Lucas Chevalier from Lille and has been linked with a move to Manchester City. A scrappy first half saw little creativity, and neither Chevalier or Lopes had much to do. Nantes coach Luis Castro may regret leaving his best striker, Matthis Abline, on the bench until the 60th minute. Abline is pursuing a move away from Nantes, which looked much sharper when he came on.
