AL AIN (WAM)The inaugural Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship 2025, organised by International Vision Sports Management (IVSM), kicked off today, Friday, at ADNEC Centre Al Ain.The three-day event, running until August 3, is bringing more than a thousand athletes from over 60 countries to Al Ain Region for a highly anticipated showcase of elite grappling.This initiative is held in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP).In attendance on the opening day were Saeed Al Dhaheri, Destination Management Department Director at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Tareq Al Bahri, General Manager of International Vision Sports Management; and Kenneth Milimo Nganga, Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to the UAE.Day one featured matches in the professional divisions through to the semi-final stage. Athletes delivered intense and high-level performances in front of an enthusiastic audience, with many grabbing their spots in the finals and a chance to earn 2,000 AJP ranking points along with lucrative cash prizes.Tareq Al Bahri, General Manager of International Vision Sports Management, said, 'The Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship is a valuable addition to our impressive roster of local and international events and a new chapter in the sporting legacy we are building in Abu Dhabi. We have ensured the championship is staged at the highest level, offering grappling athletes a professional platform to showcase their talent on the world stage, right from the heart of the global capital of jiu-jitsu.'The successful turnout of more than athletes from over 60 countries, along with the remarkable public attendance, once again highlights Abu Dhabi's excellence in delivering international sporting events to the highest standards.'We witnessed outstanding performances today from competitors in the professional divisions. Their advanced techniques and vast experience reflect years of dedication to the sport.'Abdullah Saqr Abdullah, an athlete from M.O.D Academy competing in the 85 kg professional division, said, 'We began preparing for this championship well in advance, knowing it would be a high-level and brand-new competition that demands great focus. That raises the level of challenge, especially as we aim to earn as many ranking points as possible. The matches today have been extremely competitive, with a large number of participants, which pushes us to give even more to secure victory.'
The official championship shirt was unveiled during a press conference at ADNEC Centre Al Ain on Thursday, and the championship continues tomorrow (Saturday), with action set to intensify as the youth and amateur divisions get underway. The final day promises to deliver even more excitement, with the playoffs and finals determining the top names in global grappling.

Hosting this championship in Al Ain Region not only celebrated the growing local enthusiasm for combat sports, but also reinforced the area's growing role in shaping Abu Dhabi's dynamic tourism landscape.'General Manager of IVSM, Tareq Al Bahri, added, 'The inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship has been a massive success. The numbers speak for themselves: more than 1,000 athletes from over 120 clubs and academies competed across various categories, supported daily by 25 referees and 40 volunteers.'The energy inside the arena, the professionalism on display, and the support from our community made this a truly special edition. We are grateful to every athlete, referee, volunteer, fan, partner, and academy who contributed to this success. We will be back soon with more exciting grappling events in the near future.'The championship featured youth, amateur, professional, and masters divisions across multiple weight classes, attracting a diverse field of under official AJP Tour regulations, the championship awarded 2,000 ranking points and cash prizes to winners, ensuring a high-performance environment throughout the terms of rankings, the Best Academy (Under-18) title went to the UAE's ADMA International, which secured 49,100 points. Samat Ramazanov Academy from Kazakhstan came second with 12,000 points, followed by Brazil's Melqui Galvao Academy with 8,000 the Best Academy (18+) category, it was an all-Emirati affair. Commando Group, ADMA International, and M.O.D UAE claimed the top three spots with 48,200, 31,640, and 29,360 points, respectively. In the country rankings, the UAE, Brazil, and Russia occupied the top three positions.

The curtain came down on the inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship 2025, held over three days at ADNEC Centre Al Ain on Sunday. Emirati clubs delivered a powerful statement, sweeping the top three positions in the championship. Organised by International Vision Sports Management (IVSM), the championship featured thrilling matches and high-level competition, drawing a large crowd and more than 1,000 athletes from over 60 countries to the Al Ain Region. The final day saw the culmination of professional category matches, with standout performances energising the crowd. The UAE's Commando Group topped the overall standings across divisions, followed by ADMA International in second place and M.O.D UAE in third. Winners were awarded medals and cash prizes at the conclusion of the event. This initiative was held in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi and under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP). In attendance on the final day and participating in the awards ceremony were Sheikh Tarik bin Faisal Al Qassimi, Saeed Al Dhaheri, Destination Management Department Director at the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, and Tareq Al Bahri, General Manager of International Vision Sports Management. Tareq Al Bahri, General Manager of IVSM, said: 'This year, we succeeded in delivering an exceptional edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship by attracting top-tier international athletes to the Al Ain Region and organising professional-level matches that reflect Abu Dhabi's status as the world capital of jiu-jitsu. 'We thank all our supporting partners and the fans whose presence played a vital role in making this event a success. 'We promise to continue delivering high-calibre grappling championships that elevate the sport and help uncover new talent at both the local and global levels. 'Through this championship, we aim to cement Abu Dhabi and the Al Ain Region as global destinations for world-class sporting events, while expanding interest in grappling across all age groups. In future editions, we look forward to growing the event further, both in terms of participation and organisational excellence, so it continues to meet the expectations of athletes and spectators alike.' Pouya Rahmani of Team Nogueira Dubai, who won gold in the Men's Grappling / 18+ / Professionals / 125kg division, said: 'I feel amazing. This is my first world title in grappling as a black belt, and it means a lot to me. 'It's been a long journey, and finally winning this medal is incredibly satisfying. My final match was against Haitham Redha. I lost to him the last time, and he's a strong fighter, but I managed to take the victory this time. Thank you, Abu Dhabi. Thank you, Al Ain.' Caroline Vinhaes of Piramide Grappling Association, who claimed gold in the Women's 18+ / Professionals / 55kg division, added: 'I really enjoyed the championship. It is amazing to have a tournament dedicated specifically to grappling.
