Google Maps was primarily designed for inner-city travel, where roads are well-marked and relatively smooth. I doubt the app's developers envisioned users navigating gravel roads in the heartland of South Africa. So, it's unsurprising that the app becomes far less useful once you hit the dirt. However, where Google Maps falls short, OsmAnd excels.
OsmAnd is a free, open-source app on the Play Store and F-Droid. It draws data from various sources, primarily relying on OpenStreetMap, which volunteers with local knowledge worldwide maintain. This gives it broader coverage of lesser-known routes that Google Maps often overlooks, providing OsmAnd a significant advantage when things get dusty.

Although I rarely venture beyond paved roads in my higher-clearance, front-wheel-drive car, there have been times when I've needed to take an unpaved shortcut. In smaller towns, often the singular paved road in and out is blocked, forcing me to choose the alternative, dustier route. In these situations, I want to know the road surface and conditions throughout its length to know precisely what to expect. For the most part, I'd rather avoid situations where I might have to turn around, potentially running out of fuel or damaging my car.
Google Maps assumes every route is passable, and the UI doesn't suggest otherwise.
Google Maps assumes that every route is passable, at least as far as its UI is concerned. It does a poor job of highlighting gravel routes, which is particularly problematic in my region. Several main thoroughfares are unpaved, while some are generally known as tire-killers. To avoid these, I need more information when faced with a dusty track.

While Google Maps fails in this regard, OsmAnd shines. Using the Map Styles option, I can display road surface and smoothness data on my Android Auto screen, providing valuable insights into a route's challenges. I might consider taking a longer, safer path if a shorter route consists of sand or mud. It also highlights whether the smooth asphalt road becomes a more treacherous unpaved track.
On OsmAnd, each surface type is color-coded, and road smoothness is indicated by line style. It's easy to distinguish between tarred roads, passable gravel roads, impassable mud trails, or roads made of stone or grass. I use the Touring map style to display this information.

Although plotting all this data or viewing the map from a low zoom distance can become convoluted, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
Other map styles, like Offroad, prioritize 4×4 trails if you spend most of your time on dirt. Overlays are also available, and my favorite is Slope, which shows an area's incline or decline. The deeper the red, the steeper the climb. I can gauge how steep a road is when using it in conjunction with the Touring map style.
No signal? No problem

Dovetailing with OsmAnd's various map styles and extensive data sets is its offline map support. When traveling these routes, cell coverage isn't guaranteed. While you can download offline maps for Google Maps, the data is limited. I find it silly that Google restricts content downloading to the visible area on the screen rather than the entire region. OsmAnd handles offline data much better, making it a superior choice when service is an issue.

You can download maps for whichever region or country you desire, as well as data beyond the road. Fancy a boat ride during your adventure? OsmAnd offers nautical map downloads, too.
OsmAnd can import and display data from KML or GPX files if you're traveling with friends who have recorded a route. This is useful for hiking and driving non-standard routes. Google Maps app doesn't directly support GPX imports from its interface.

As you can probably tell, I'm a fan of OsmAnd. It's one of the few apps I don't mind paying an annual subscription for, least of all to unlock its Android Auto support. However, the app isn't without its issues. As much as I prefer it to Google Maps off the highway, OsmAnd is one of the most frustrating apps I've ever used.
Let's start with its customization options. While it offers extensive map styles, overlays, and detailed data, users must modify XML files to make even the smallest adjustments beyond the stock map styles. For example, if I want the Touring map style to only display surface smoothness for non-asphalt routes, I'd have to retrieve its XML file, find the line I want to edit, and save it in OsmAnd's data folder, which is hidden within Android/data. If I don't like the change, I'm forced to repeat the process. This could be fixed with a GUI map style editor allowing users to view changes in real-time.
As much as I like OsmAnd, some of its shortcomings drive me up the wall.
It's also worth mentioning the baseline data OsmAnd employs. While OpenStreetMap offers clear advantages, it lacks some of Google Maps' best features. Although OsmAnd displays points of interest, it's almost useless for viewing detailed information. For example, Google Maps may show a camping spot's gate times, reviews, and images, while OsmAnd may only indicate its presence.

Then there's OsmAnd's search capabilities, which pale compared to Google's. Maps usually knows where I want to go, even if it sometimes leads me astray. OsmAnd just doesn't offer the same precision via its search bar.
Perhaps more frustrating is the app's performance on Android Auto. OsmAnd is highly customizable, but the app grows slower the more data you overlay. Even my relatively modern Galaxy S24 FE struggles to relay mapping data to my car's screen, while some map views are sluggish on the phone itself.
OsmAnd is full of compromises. Its list of cons is extensive, and many aspects are more challenging to use than they should be. But I wouldn't want to be without it on a road trip, especially if I might take a surprise turn through the mountains. There is room for improvement, and I do not doubt that the developers will address most of these and other users' concerns in future versions. Nevertheless, if you're planning an adventure soon, consider adding OsmAnd to your device too.

Andy Walker / Android Authority Samsung's smartwatches (and the Galaxy Ring) are compatible with most Android phones, but you'll only get the full experience when paired with Samsung Galaxy smartphones. This applies to older Galaxy Watch models up to the latest Galaxy Watch 8 series and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025. But what are these features, and are they worth considering switching smartphones for? Do you use a Galaxy Watch with a Samsung smartphone? 0 votes Yes, I do. NaN % No, I pair my Galaxy Watch with another Android phone. NaN % No, I use a Samsung phone paired with another smartwatch. NaN % No, I don't own a Galaxy Watch or a Samsung phone. NaN % There are many features, but only a few truly make the partnership worthwhile, at least for me. I don't own a Galaxy Ring, but I can comment on the synergy between my Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy S24 FE. Additional health features Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority I use my Galaxy Watch primarily as a fitness tracker, so I prioritize features that monitor health issues. Most fitness tracking features are available across all Android phones, including basic heart rate tracking, step tracking, sleep, and SpO2 insights. However, if you want to use your wearable specifically to check your heartbeat or blood pressure, you need to pair it with a Samsung smartphone and download the exclusive Samsung Health Monitor app. This app is also limited to specific markets, so check availability if these features are essential to you. Notably, the app enables the Galaxy Watch 4 and newer models' ECG capabilities, or electrocardiogram, which samples your heart's rhythm and offers guidance if it detects irregularities. Thankfully, my heart's still strong, but I regularly use this feature when I feel unusually tired or stressed. Health Monitor also unlocks the Galaxy Watch series' blood pressure monitoring feature, which requires calibration with a standalone monitor before use. This feature is great for quick checkups if you're away from home without a dedicated monitor. Other Galaxy Watch features that require a Samsung smartphone include stress reminders, sleep apnea monitoring, and Energy Score insight. Sleep apnea monitoring samples your breathing and heart rate rhythm at night, checking for any concerning dips in blood oxygen levels. It then provides further guidance. I use this feature a few times a year, and it offers great insight into my overall sleep health. Energy Score insight adds AI-powered context to your Energy Score — a figure that quantifies your daily readiness based on previous activity and rest. Energy Score works without a Samsung phone, but you'll only get the number and not much else. Several new Galaxy Watch health tracking features aren't exclusive to Samsung smartphones but are available in newer versions of One UI Watch. This includes Vascular Load, Antioxidant Index, Running Coach, and Bedtime Guidance. Galaxy AI Andy Walker / Android Authority I agree, the constant chatter about AI can be annoying, but Galaxy AI on the Galaxy Watch is quite helpful. I've highlighted how it enables some health features on the wearable, but it's also found in more general applications. Samsung's use of AI isn't particularly intrusive and improves the experience of several features and apps on the small screen. Notably, Galaxy AI features require the watch to be paired with a compatible Samsung smartphone. So what are these features? One that I find particularly useful is Smart Replies, which provides context-aware response options to messages sent via a messaging app. While this feature is available through Samsung Messages, it also works well with WhatsApp and Google Messages. Bixby Andy Walker / Android Authority Believe it or not, Samsung's often criticized voice assistant is actually quite good. I ditched Google Gemini for a week to use Bixby exclusively, and I enjoyed it. Its availability across both the Galaxy Watch and Samsung smartphones makes pairing the two devices worthwhile. I find that Bixby triggers settings faster on these devices than Gemini, making it a better utility for controlling your device on your wrist. I use it to set timers, adjust alarms, and start exercises. Tapping the Bixby button and talking to my watch is often easier than scrolling across its tiny display to tap an even smaller button. I wouldn't consider the voice assistant better than Gemini for online tasks. Google's product is still better for anything you need fetched from the web. But, personally, I usually use my phone for these tasks. You can use both on your watch using different wake words or physical shortcuts for each. Modes and Routines Ryan Haines / Android Authority Modes and Routines are a core part of my digital life that I couldn't imagine living without them. This is perhaps the one feature I'd miss most if I separated my Galaxy Watch and Galaxy phone. In short, Modes and Routines allow me to trigger specific settings conditionally, based on location, time of day, or connected network. But this is just skimming the surface. In another article, I elaborated on the various uses of Modes and Routines, including activating power-saving mode on my watch when I don't need all its features, flipping through watch faces automatically, or making full use of my phone's Driving mode to make content on my watch more legible. There are various integrations possible with this tool. Some modes trigger automatically, too. A Samsung smartphone and Galaxy Watch will also sync other settings with one another, including alarms (via Sleep mode) and Do Not Disturb status. Camera Control Andy Walker / Android Authority I'll admit, this is one quirky reason to pair a Samsung smartphone with a Galaxy Watch, but I've grown to like it. Using a tripod for smartphone photography is a boon, especially if you want to capture nighttime shots without jittering the device's hardware. In these cases, the camera control feature is convenient. Annoyingly, it doesn't support specific camera modes that would make it genuinely helpful, like Slow Motion or Hyperlapse. Nevertheless, I have used this feature more than I thought I would. As the Galaxy Ring lacks a screen, you cannot use it to control the camera of your Galaxy phone or any Android phone. While some of these features have workarounds or alternatives, many of the above features genuinely enhance the Galaxy Watch and Ring experience. I wouldn't suggest you rush out and purchase a Samsung phone today if you own a Galaxy Watch, but it's something to consider going forward. Hadlee Simons / Android Authority Say what you will about Samsung One UI, but it makes a strong argument for being one of the most feature-rich Android skins on the market. That's in large part due to the company's Good Lock suite of apps, which allows you to deeply customize various aspects of your phone. The latest Good Lock app is Display Assistant, which was released at the tail end of 2024. After recently downloading it, I've discovered a feature I'd love to see on all of my future Android phones. Screen timeout by app All smartphones let you adjust the screen timeout period, which is how long it takes for your phone screen to turn off due to inactivity. However, Display Assistant takes this a step further and lets you adjust the screen timeout for each individual app. That's incredibly useful on paper, as some apps would benefit from a longer or shorter screen timeout period. I find this extremely useful for reading ebooks, where your phone might mistake the lack of touch input for inactivity. In fact, I would've loved this for my LG V60 and its Dual Screen Case. That's because I use the Wide Mode app to span ebooks across both screens, but the phone reverts to a single-screen view after the screen goes to sleep. This feature would've also been useful when I was recently testing the GameHub emulator on my Pixel phone. I was downloading a demo and other components via this app, but these downloads would often stop and sometimes restart if I let the screen turn off. That meant I was forced to prod the screen every now and then to make sure the content actually downloaded. So, making GameHub's screen timeout five or 10 minutes would've certainly helped in this regard. I also imagine this would be practical for video-related apps, where encoding, saving, or uploading a clip might take a while. The last thing you want is for the process to be interrupted because the phone decided to shut off the screen. What else can you do with Display Assistant? This isn't the only useful feature I've found in Display Assistant. The app also offers a Quick Settings toggle to keep the screen on for 30 minutes. That's useful if you haven't set individual screen timeouts for your apps but need the phone to stay awake in a given situation. The nifty screen controls don't end here, either. I can even force specific apps to run at a standard refresh rate. Modern Android phones are very adept at dynamically adjusting the screen refresh rate to balance fluidity and battery life, but this is still a useful option. It's particularly handy if you value the high refresh rate in some apps (e.g. games, web browsers) but are happy with a 60Hz cap in others. Thankfully, apps capped at 60Hz can still dip below this threshold, which means you'vestill got the battery life benefits of a variable refresh rate screen. What setting would you like to see on all Android phones? 0 votes Per-app screen timeout NaN % Per-app refresh rate adjustments NaN % A slider to speed up auto-brightness adjustment NaN % Otherwise, Display Assistant also has a couple of features related to adaptive brightness. For one, you can adjust the speed at which your phone changes screen brightness (up to 4x). That's useful if auto-brightness is just too slow to adapt to your surroundings. However, you can also reset your adaptive brightness patterns altogether. The ability to have your phone relearn your brightness preferences isn't new, but this solution is more convenient than the current method. Right now, you have to reset your adaptive brightness data by diving into settings > apps > Device Health Services > Storage > Clear Data. In any event, this is another great Good Lock app worth downloading if you're a Samsung owner. But I really hope manufacturers like Google, OnePlus, and others offer similar per-app display controls on their own phones in the near future. Follow
