Chris So Wai-yin hopes he can help Ryan Moore finish his flying Hong Kong stint on a winning note when the pair combine with Sunny Da Best at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
One of a string of jockeys in town as cover for the injured Zac Purton and Vincent Ho Chak-yiu, Moore landed two winners at the city circuit last Wednesday before having to settle for three placings from his nine rides at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Moore has a full book of nine mounts this Wednesday and one of his leading chances looks to be Sunny Da Best in the Class Three Kwoon Chung Bus 60th Anniversary Cup (1,200m).
'When we knew Ryan was coming I asked him if he was interested straight away. He read the form and got back to me saying he'd love to ride him,' said So of the star British jockey, who replaces Purton aboard Sunny Da Best.

Victorious in one of five starts this season, Sunny Da Best was a close second on Class Three debut last start and he now faces another new challenge after racing exclusively at Sha Tin in his first 10 career starts.
'I think Happy Valley might be more suitable for him – he trialled there and trialled nicely,' said So of Sunny Da Best, who was second in a 1,200m Valley trial back in October.
'He handled the track in that trial and at Happy Valley, the pace is faster in the early stages, which should suit him.'
Sunny Da Best's most recent trial came under Moore on the Sha Tin dirt last week, with the four-year-old hitting the line with enough vigour to ensure So heads into the midweek meeting confident.
'He had a soft trial under Ryan and I was happy with it,' said the trainer.
'Everything is good, his condition is good and his gallops in the morning are good. Draw seven is not too bad with Ryan riding and the horse has been running well.'
Sunny Da Best locks horns with the likes of Young Emperor, who won on Hong Kong debut in October but hasn't been seen since running eighth in November, Francis Meynell, Golden Empire and Romantic Son.
So, who sits five wins short of 400 Hong Kong successes as a trainer, also saddles up Golden Fairy, Inno Century, Devas Twelve, Colourful Winner and Owners' Praise at the season's 51st meeting.
Moore's book features a couple of other last-start placegetters who could go one better on Wednesday – Golden Rise in the Class Four Kwoon Chung Macau Limousine Rental Services Handicap (1,200m) and Beauty Alliance in the Class Four Kwoon Chung Inclusive & Accessible Service Handicap (1,800m).
Both of those rides are for John Size and Moore will no doubt be keen to deliver the goods for Hong Kong's 12-time champion trainer after failing to return a winner from six rides for the 70-year-old on Sunday.

Sabalenka outlasts Raducanu in Cincinnati thriller

Sabalenka outlasts Raducanu in Cincinnati thriller Sabalenka was put to the test against Emma Raducanu in a gruelling three-hour contest. Photo: Reuters Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka fought through a three-hour battle to hold off an inspired Emma Raducanu 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) and reach the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open. The top seed, who won the Cincinnati final a year ago over Jessica Pegula, increased her lead at the top of the WTA Tour match-win statistics as she secured her 49th of the season. But the struggle was real for Sabalenka, who finished with two aces in the closing stages. "I'm happy to get through this difficult match," Sabalenka said. "I just hope tomorrow is a day off. I need time to recover from such a great battle." Raducanu put up a huge fight, matching Sabalenka throughout. The British number one survived a 25-minute eighth game of the final set, which went to 13 deuces, with Raducanu saving four break points before finally holding for 4-all and eventually into a tiebreaker. But Sabalenka squeezed out victory with a sixth ace for 5-4 in the breaker and delivered her seventh on second match point to bring the battle to a close after three hours and nine minutes. "It was all about momentum," Sabalenka said. "I took some risks at the end, went for crazy shots, went to the net. "A risky game from me helped to put a lot of pressure on her," she said of an opponent whom she hugged warmly at the net. Sabalenka is bidding for her 10th trophy at the 1000 level and second this season after winning at Madrid. In other third-round results at the last major tuneup prior to the US Open, Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Australian Maya Joint 6-4, 6-3. Sorana Cirstea defeated Yuan Yue of China 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 6-4 and will next play third seed Iga Swiatek, who got a walkover into the round of 16. Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, a quarter-finalist this month in Montreal, made further hard court progress with a 6-4, 6-1 thrashing of American wild card Taylor Townsend. Her next opponent will be Sabalenka on Wednesday. In the men's draw, seventh seed Holger Rune, a semi-finalist here a year ago, ended the hopes of Alex Michelsen with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory. Felix Auger-Aliassime got a win for Canada, advancing 7-6 (7/4), 4-2 when French opponent Arthur Rinderknech retired with apparent heat illness after two gruelling hours on court. American Frances Tiafoe advanced past Ugo Humbert of France 6-4, 6-4 in 82 minutes. (AFP)

Reds lose Diaz to Bayern in reported 75m euro deal

Reds lose Diaz to Bayern in reported 75m euro deal Luis Diaz made 148 appearances in all competitions across four seasons at Liverpool, scoring 41 goals and registering 23 assists. File photo: Reuters Bayern Munich have signed Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Liverpool on a four-year contract, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed but British media reported Bayern paid around 75 million euros for the 28-year-old Colombia international. Diaz's contract with Liverpool ran until June 2027. He moved to the Merseyside club from Portuguese side Porto for around 50 million euros in January 2022. "Three years and a half that I'll treasure forever. I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together," Diaz posted on Instagram. "I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart... "It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn't lost one of ours in such a tragic way," Diaz added, referring to former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident in July. "As I said, and I repeat, I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything. YNWA." Diaz made 148 appearances in all competitions across four seasons at Liverpool, scoring 41 goals and registering 23 assists. His best performance in the Premier League came last season, when he helped Liverpool to their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title with 13 goals and seven assists from 36 games. Diaz also helped Liverpool win the FA Cup in 2022 and the League Cup in 2022 and 2024. He primarily played on the left wing at Liverpool and can also be deployed as a striker. "Luis Diaz is an internationally experienced player with enormous quality, great skills and great reliability. He will help our team immediately. We are delighted that we were able to sign him for Bayern," Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said. "Transfers like this work when everything clicks into place. Our fans can look forward to an exceptional player." Diaz is the second Liverpool player to join a German side in this transfer window, after defender Jarell Quansah moved to Bayer Leverkusen in July. (Reuters)

England beat Spain on penalties to win Euro 2025

England beat Spain on penalties to win Euro 2025 The victory was the first time any England team had won a major trophy on foreign soil. Photo: Reuters Chloe Kelly converted the decisive kick as England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to lift the Women's Euro 2025 trophy after Sunday's game had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, allowing the Lionesses to avenge their defeat in the World Cup final two years ago and retain their continental crown. It looked as though Spain would repeat their victory over England in Sydney in 2023 as they dominated the game at St Jakob-Park in Basel and led through Mariona Caldentey's first-half header. But England did not panic, having already trailed against both Sweden in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semis before finding a way to win. Alessia Russo headed in their equaliser just before the hour mark, and no further goals meant a shoot-out in which Kelly – who once again had a huge impact off the bench – netted the winner. "I was cool, I was composed. I knew I was going to hit the back of the net," Kelly told the BBC of her penalty. It was an agonising way to lose for Spain, but they failed to score three of their spot-kicks, with reigning Ballon d'Or Aitana Bonmati seeing her effort saved. Sarina Wiegman's England are therefore back-to-back European champions, three years after they defeated Germany in extra time at Wembley to win a first women's major tournament. "What a team. What a game. What drama. You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was at the match, wrote on X. Defeating Spain helps make up for the pain of losing the World Cup final in 2023, and England's victory also confirms Wiegman's place among the coaching greats. She has now won three consecutive European Championships, having led her native Netherlands to victory in 2017 before doing the same with England three years ago. "We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible," said Wiegman, whose team lost to France in their first match at the tournament. "Losing your first game and becoming European champions is incredible," she added. Spain fell short in their quest to add a maiden European Championship title to the World Cup they won in Australia. La Roja dominated possession as expected, but ultimately paid the price for not killing the game against an England side who never know when they are beaten. "I am in shock," Bonmati told broadcaster TVE before apologising for failing from the spot. "Football is cruel. Everything seems bad right now, but I think we played the best football during the tournament." (AFP)
