Over 150 mule accounts frozen, RM32mil seized in Penang gambling crackdown

GEORGE TOWN: Ongoing efforts to combat illegal gambling and online fraud continue to yield positive results, with police having successfully frozen more than 150 mule accounts in the state, involving over RM32 million in illicit funds.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (DAP – Padang Kota) said the freezing of these accounts formed part of the authorities' decisive actions, particularly through continuous enforcement operations such as Ops Dadu, aimed at dismantling online gambling syndicates and cyber fraud networks.
"Police are conducting ongoing operations like Ops Dadu to cripple gambling and scam syndicates," he told the state legislative assembly today.
He was responding to a question from Joseph Ng Soon Siang (DAP – Air Itam), who asked about the steps taken by the authorities to address gambling and fraud-related crimes.
Chow said that in 2023, a total of 2,337 complaints related to online gambling were recorded, resulting in 2,681 arrests and 1,390 charges being brought against suspects.
"For 2024, the number of cases declined to 1,510, with 1,810 arrests and 1,084 charges filed.
"As of March 2025, 485 cases have been recorded, leading to 542 arrests and 255 charges," he added.
He said the state government remained committed to working closely with all enforcement agencies to ensure illegal activities were tackled comprehensively, safeguarding the welfare and security of the people of Penang.

DAP installs giant Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas after flag error

KEPALA BATAS: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) installed a massive Jalur Gemilang at a hardware store on Jalan Bertam Perdana to rectify a recent viral incident involving the national flag being flown upside down. Penang DAP assistant secretary H'ng Mooi Lye stated the 10x20ft flag serves as an educational tool to demonstrate proper flag etiquette. 'For the love of the country, we should make it right.' H'ng added the installation acts as a visual guide for the public during the National Month campaign from 1 August to 16 September. As part of the initiative, H'ng distributed 500 flags to the public during the site visit. Penang Chief Minister's Special Coordinator Lay Hock Peng also attended the event. H'ng noted the Penang Island City Council and Seberang Perai City Council are urging businesses to decorate with the national flag throughout National Month. Hardware store owner Pang Chin Tian, 59, admitted the upside-down flag incident was unintentional. Pang accepted responsibility for the mistake, which occurred last Saturday, and pledged to be more cautious in future flag displays. 'It was not intentional. I admit it was my fault.' Police arrested Pang on Saturday and released him on bail after recording his statement on Sunday. The investigation followed a 21-second viral video showing Pang and another man allegedly hoisting the flag incorrectly. – Bernama

Penang DAP installs giant Jalur Gemilang at Kepala Batas hardware store after display faux pas

KEPALA BATAS, Aug 12 — DAP today took a proactive step by installing a giant Jalur Gemilang at a hardware store on Jalan Bertam Perdana, which recently went viral for flying the national flag upside down. Penang DAP assistant secretary H'ng Mooi Lye said the huge flag measuring 10x20ft was put up as an educational effort to demonstrate the correct way to display the national flag and to prevent similar mistakes from recurring. 'For the love of the country, we should make it right. 'The installation of this giant flag also serves as a visual guide for the public on the correct way to do it, especially during this 'Fly the Jalur Gemilang' campaign in conjunction with the National Month, which runs from Aug 1 to Sept 16,' H'ng told reporters during a site visit. H'ng, who is also the State Local Government and Urban and Rural Planning Committee chairman, also distributed 500 flags to members of the public at the site as part of the outreach initiative. Also present was the Penang Chief Minister's Special Coordinator, Lay Hock Peng. H'ng said Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) are encouraging business owners to decorate their premises with the national flag throughout the National Month period. Meanwhile, the hardware store owner Pang Chin Tian, 59, who went viral over the weekend for allegedly flying the national flag upside down, said he is ready to face any legal consequences. Pang admitted the mistake was unintentional and took full responsibility for the incident, which occurred last Saturday. He vowed to be more careful in the future when displaying the national flag. 'It was not intentional. I admit it was my fault. At the time, the flag hadn't been fully installed yet. Once we realised the mistake, we corrected it immediately. Unfortunately, the viral video only showed part of the incident,' he said. Police arrested Pang last Saturday and released him on bail after recording his statement on Sunday. The investigation was launched following a 21-second video showing Pang and another man allegedly hoisting the national flag upside down. — Bernama

Akmal scraps ‘class' for Penang store owner who flew flag upside down

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh had said he would protest at the shop in Penang if the owner was not charged by Thursday. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has called off a planned 'class' for the Penang shop owner accused of hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down, but will turn up on Thursday to see if DAP hangs its promised giant national flag 'correctly'. Akmal yesterday threatened to protest at the shop if the owner is not charged by Thursday, saying he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to put up a flag properly'. This change of plan came after DAP today said it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang for the shop and deploy Penang DAP members to distribute 831 Jalur Gemilang flags, should anyone try to stir trouble. In a Facebook video, Akmal sarcastically thanked DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook for the initiative, as it was akin to 'teaching' the person. He said if DAP wanted to welcome them, he would gladly attend the event. 'I also want to see what kind of welcome there is, and they say they want to hand out flags. God willing, we'll also bring flags to hand out together, to raise awareness among the public. 'Whether or not there's prosecution, that's secondary, but on Thursday we'll be there. Why? Because you want to host us, so we accept it,' he said. Separately, Akmal also addressed an incident involving Terengganu Umno Youth, whose recent poster displayed the Jalur Gemilang with missing stripes. He confirmed the mistake and urged police to investigate and take stern action, even though the person is from his own party. 'Because this is not about politics. This is about respecting our national symbol. No matter who you are, what race you are, or what your political beliefs are. 'Even if you're from my own group. Wrong is wrong,' he said.
