
Vauxhall Frontera Gravel takes budget EV to the great outdoors
After 20 years since the original model went out of production, the Vauxhall Frontera returned last year and now it looks like it'll finally do its predecessor's off-road ability justice with a wild Gravel variant.
Instead of the Hybrid 100 or Hybrid 136 versions, the Frontera Gravel is based on the all-electric model – but before you start booking green-laning trips, it's worth noting that Vauxhall's latest creation is just a show car.
Ahead of the Frontera Gravel's unveiling at XS Carnight in Wörthersee, Austria, Rebecca Reinermann, Vauxhall's vice president of marketing, said: 'We wanted to take the Frontera to the next level and show how an everyday hero can become a real adventurer'. Backing this up, Vauxhall says the Frontera Gravel is 'an ultra-rugged show car version of the production Frontera Electric, designed for demanding off-road adventures without limitations'. When we tried the new Frontera for the first time in late 2024 we were impressed with its practicality, safety kit and price. One aspect that we noticed wasn't a priority for the model (unlike its all-wheel-drive predecessor) was off-roading. The Frontera Gravel, with the help of tuning specialists XS and design studio BlackFish Graphics, certainly looks like it will be able to change that.
The Frontera Gravel gains a matt black roof and bonnet that contrast with the matt champagne-coloured wrap with orange badging and accents on the mirrors, front and rear bumpers, spoiler and brake calipers, to give the Vauxhall a distinctive look.
There are plenty of genuinely useful tools to aid adventuring, too. There's a winch and hook at the front, an auxiliary LED lights on the bonnet and roof rack, plus all-terrain tyres (with a spare mounted on the roof) that are wrapped around some chunky 16-inch alloy wheels. The interior remains the same as the Frontera Electric, although the seats get some bespoke orange trim.
While the Frontera Gravel looks like it's ready to embarrass Jeep and Land Rover, it's only has the same powertrain as the standard car. That means a front-wheel-drive layout with an electric motor that produces 111bhp and 125Nm of torque. The Frontera Electric is a featherweight for an electric SUV, weighing just over 1,500kg, which could help the Gravel version scamper up craggy inclines, but either way we'll never know because the latter remains just a show car.

RAF chief set to be new head of armed forces
The head of the RAF is set to be appointed as the new chief of the British armed forces, according to reports. Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton is thought to be in line to be the next Chief of Defence Staff. The position is currently held by Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, who has been in the role since 2021. According to his biography on the Government website, Sir Richard joined the RAF in 1989 as a university cadet, and served as deputy chief of the defence staff from 2019 to 2022. The appointment comes as the Government has pledged to increase defence spending in the UK to 2.5% of gross domestic product on defence from April 2027, with a goal of increasing that to 3% over the next parliament, a timetable which could stretch to 2034. The Ministry of Defence said: 'This is speculation. The appointment process is ongoing and any announcement will be made in the usual way.'

Bruno Fernandes reveals he rejected Saudi Arabia move to ‘stay at the highest level'
Manchester United's captain, Bruno Fernandes, has confirmed he has turned down a money-spinning move to Saudi Arabia because he wants to 'stay at the highest level'. The 30-year-old midfielder has been the subject of speculation linking him with a £100m switch to Al-Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League side reportedly prepared to pay him £700,000 per week. However, Fernandes confirmed he had rejected the chance to move after speaking to Ruben Amorim and his own family. Britain pledges to deliver 100,000 drones to Ukraine by April 2026
LONDON, June 4 (Reuters) - Britain pledged on Wednesday to supply 100,000 drones to Ukraine by the end of the current financial year in April 2026, marking a tenfold increase, after saying the unmanned aerial vehicles had transformed the way wars are fought. The government on Monday endorsed an independently-produced Strategic Defence Review, which calls for a more lethal, tech-driven army to counter emerging threats, including possible Russian aggression. Britain, one of Ukraine's staunchest Western supporters, plans to learn from Kyiv's more than three-year fight against Russian invasion, during which drones have transformed the battlefield. The 350-million-pound ($473 million) drone package is part of a broader 4.5-billion-pound military support initiative for Ukraine, the government said. Defence Secretary John Healey will make the announcement at a 50-nation Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Brussels, co-hosted with Germany. "The UK is stepping up its support for Ukraine by delivering hundreds of thousands more drones this year and completing a major milestone in the delivery of critical artillery ammunition," Healey said in a statement ahead of the meeting. In addition to the drone deliveries, Britain said it has completed the shipment of 140,000 artillery shells to Ukraine since January and will spend a further 247 million pounds this year training Ukrainian troops.
