Asean leaders want Malaysia to continue as mediator in Thailand-Cambodia conflict
KUALA LUMPUR: All Asean member state leaders have agreed that Malaysia should continue playing the role of mediator to resolve the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had contacted all Asean leaders earlier on Thursday (Aug 7) morning before receiving a courtesy call from the Thai and Cambodian delegations in Kuala Lumpur for the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting at the Armed Forces' Wisma Perwira. Saifuddin Nasution said all Asean leaders or heads of state contacted expressed their support for Malaysia's role in mediating the conflict between the two neighbouring Asean countries. "All agreed that the current bilateral mechanism is sufficient for now, while also agreeing that there will be another round of discussions after today's meeting," he told a press conference after the meeting. 2026 Madani Budget to focus on 'floor and ceilings' reforms, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: The 2026 Madani Budget will focus on "floor and ceiling" issues across various sectors and segments, in line with the broader framework of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) tabled last month. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the emphasis was necessary as any focus on growth and investment without addressing the "floor" could lead to future problems. "I believe that if we talk about growth and investment without considering the floor, it will become a problem because the cost of goods is not decreasing. "Salaries must increase, even if only slightly. If they rise proportionately or more, it will not create the kind of pressure that some of our people currently feel due to the rising cost of living," he said during his closing remarks at the 2026 Budget Engagement Session held at the Finance Ministry today. Also present was Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. The session was attended by around 300 representatives from the civil service, industry, chambers of commerce, technocrats, economists, academics, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and international bodies. Earlier, in his speech, Amir Hamzah said the 2026 Budget would be the first to align with the goals of the 13MP. He said the budget, scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10, would focus on three main pillars — raising the ceiling, raising the floor, and strengthening good governance in public administration. Amir Hamzah added that in raising the ceiling, the government aims to enhance the country's competitiveness and support high-growth, high-value sectors, particularly the semiconductor industry, energy transition, and the Islamic economy.
