Cambridge Satchel opens store in heart of historic Bath

Fashion Network10-07-2025
Since being acquired by French textiles giant Charguers, Cambridge Satchel has been ramping up its store opening plans and its latest debut is in Bath for its fourth opening this year.
The made-in-Britain leather goods company, has opened in the Roman-meets-Georgian city that has an affluent local population as well as being an international tourist magnet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It's on Bath's New Bond Street, which is known for its Georgian architecture and mix of both commercial and residential spaces. Its new home is a four-storey Georgian townhouse, with two floors of dedicated retail space spanning 67 square metres.
Under the creative direction of CEO Carine De Koenigswarter, the interior was developed by Atelier A&D, with a brief to reflect the craftsmanship of the Cambridge Satchel brand.
The company said it's focused on 'contemporary elegance with subtle nods to British heritage, a hallmark of the brand's identity. Inspired by the local landscape, particularly the iconic Bath stone, Atelier A&D has carefully restored the once-neglected unit'.
The interiors feature 'warm, neutral tones mirroring the hues of the city's famous stone'. The same tones are used in custom low units and wall cases. And a focal feature wall made from walnut panelling is enhanced by a large-format lightbox to provide a centrepiece.
The storefront has been 'thoughtfully redesigned and repainted to match the interior's soft palette'. A dark bronze sign is a key feature of the updated façade, while the display window features handmade dark bronze wire metal cubes. These bespoke elements, made in Sheffield from local steel, 'introduce a subtle touch of industrial luxury'.

Louis Vuitton unveils luxe make-up line in link with Pat McGrath

has announced the arrival of La Beauté, an 'elevated make-up line', as colour cosmetics continue to be seen as key growth avenues for ultra-luxury labels. And it comes as the company announces the official arrival of Dame Pat McGrath as creative director, Cosmetics, for La Beauté (although she's clearly been working on this project for some time). LVMH 's star brand said the launch expands the House's vision that's 'rooted in travel, creativity, and savoir-faire,' and introduces a 'highly curated offering of the finest quality make-up, housed in objets d'art designed to be kept forever'. It added that it's 'redefining beauty as a lifestyle, as an experience and as a dedicated art form,' and is setting 'a new standard in luxury beauty'. What this means in practice is 55 lipsticks (after all, LV is 55 in Roman numerals), 10 balms and eight eye palettes with 20 August set for the Chinese launch, then 25 August as a wider digital pre-launch date and a global debut later next week. The company said those lipsticks, balms, and eyeshadows (priced from $160 to $250) are 'objects of desire that echo the trunk-making, artistry, and cultural vision at the heart of Louis Vuitton, each with a McGrath twist. As with the Maison's most iconic pieces across fashion, accessories and fragrance, every detail has been considered, refined, and perfected'. And the packaging really underlines the luxury edge. Gilded packs by Konstantin Grcic are linked closely to the established codes of Louis Vuitton and in particular give a starring role to the LV flower. With the ongoing luxury fashion slowdown and the global luxury beauty market expected to continue a strong growth trajectory, it's an increasingly important category for even the most successful fashion labels. And the more luxurious the better as the pricing proves. But while the prices are high, the launch is likely to appeal to aspirational luxury shoppers who may not buy the clothes but may well have a Louis Vuitton bag and will be keen to have a lipstick to go in it.

France faces prospect of paying higher borrowing costs than Italy

As hard as it may be to take for France, many investors no longer have any doubt: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Italy is now just as credible when it comes to public finances, if not more so. "Once at the bottom of the class in the European Union in terms of budget discipline, Italy is now in a position to give lessons to France," said independent economist Philippe Crevel in an analysis published at the end of July. Some observers see Italy, now led by the far right, as a model of fiscal discipline for its neighbor. The numbers most symbolic of the reversal are the interest rates that investors demand in exchange for holding the two countries' public debt. In 2011 and 2012, Italy was seen as so turbulent and unreliable that investors insisted on a premium of up to 400 basis points (4%) over French rates. When France paid 3% annual interest, Italy had to pay 7%. Since then, the risk premium has shrunk dramatically, dropping to less than five basis points for the main benchmark with a 10-year repayment period on August 15, a rate unprecedented since 2005. For five-year bonds, the gap between French and Italian debt on financial markets disappeared entirely in mid-July.
