Olav Kooij won a close-fought sprint on stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia as Isaac del Toro retained the pink jersey in Viadana.Dutchman Kooij benefited from Visma-Lease A Bike team-mate Wout van Aert's superb lead-out in the final kilometre.Casper van Uden finished second with Britain's Ben Turner of Ineos Grenadiers third."Only he [Wout] can do it, so to have him as support here is extraordinary," said Kooij."I really need to thank him and also the rest of the team, they did a fantastic job. "You don't want to be too far [back] in that last corner, that's maybe why we had to go a bit earlier than we wanted but I could jump on the wheel of Casper and pass him."Del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG stayed out of the hectic fight for position in the closing stages to finish safely in the bunch and maintain his hold on the pink jersey.A sprint for two bonus seconds at the Red Bull kilometre in Brescello means the 21-year-old heads into stage 13 with a 33-second lead over team-mate Juan Ayuso in the race overall. Kooij's British team-mate Simon Yates is in fourth, one minute and 11 seconds off the overall lead.

Forgotten Arsenal star finally leaves for Lazio - three years after his last appearance

Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares has completed a permanent transfer to Lazio for a reported £6million, three years after making his last appearance for Mikel Arteta 's side. The 25-year-old moved to the Emirates from Benfica in the summer of 2021 and made 28 appearances in all competitions during his debut season, scoring once in a 3-1 win against Manchester United. Part of a side that finished fifth, narrowly missing out on qualification for the Champions League and laying the foundations for title challenges that came in the following seasons, he was ultimately deemed surplus to requirements in the face of competition from Oleksandr Zinchenko, who joined in the summer of 2022. Tavares spent the next three seasons on loan at Marseille, Nottingham Forest and Lazio, with whom he has now signed a three-year deal. He recorded nine league assists for the Rome side as they finished seventh in Serie A last season and earned his first senior international cap for Portugal in November in a 5-1 Nations League win over Poland. In a statement, the Gunners said: 'Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Nuno for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future.' The full back has endured multiple loan spells in the last three years and has not featured for Arsenal since 2022

Yorkshire cycling fans celebrate Women's Tour of Britain start

Cycling fans in Yorkshire have spoken of their excitement as the Women's Tour of Britain got under way in the one of the four-day event began on Thursday at Dalby Forest in the North York Moors National Park, with the race then set to continue into the north-east of England and into Scotland. The start of the Women's Tour has come just over six years after the final edition of the Tour de Yorkshire was held - an event founded in the wake of the 2014 Tour de France, which famously held its opening stages in the county. Attending the opening day, spectator Lynne Gay said she wanted to see "a lot more" races come to Yorkshire in the future. Ms Gay said: "I was born into a cycling family. I've raced myself and I've followed cycling all my life, so we love being here and enjoying the atmosphere."I just wish it had stayed in the area a bit more and maybe gone to Scarborough. "We don't get much cycling in Yorkshire now the Tour de Yorkshire is gone, but I suppose we've got to be grateful we've got this."Meanwhile, Mark, a cyclist from Pickering, North Yorkshire, said: "I think it's so exciting seeing the scale of it."I think it just gets people into cycling. They think, 'I could get out and do that'."It brings excitement to the area." The picturesque North York Moors backdrop to the first stage of the race also proved to be a source of pride for the Maddie Leach said: "It's great. Just to get the exposure out to the young girls and children watching is exciting. "To show the World Tour the roads we train and race on, too. They may not enjoy it, but it's Yorkshire and it's beautiful." Listen to highlights from North Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North.

New Ulster signing receives first Springboks call-up ahead of summer Test series

The rampaging number eight, who will move to Ravenhill over the summer from Northampton Saints, is one of nine uncapped players called up to Rassie Erasmus' 54-man extended panel. South Africa begin their summer schedule with a game against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28, followed by Tests against Italy in Pretoria and Gqeberha on July 5 and 12 respectively and finishing off against Georgia in Nelspruit on July 19. It seems unlikely that 27-year-old Augustus will see any game time as six of the eight back rowers from the Springboks' last squad have been retained, including reigning and two-time World Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit and captain Siya Kolisi. However, it says much about the Alexander Bay native that he has been included in the squad after being part of last month's national alignment camp, with Erasmus clearly a fan of the Ulster-bound back row. Augustus has been in red-hot form for Northampton this season and only missed out on their Champions Cup Final against Bordeaux due to injury, helping them reach their first decider since 2011 with a bulldozing performance against Leinster in the Semi-Finals. His call-up, however, could prove to be an issue for Ulster, who were anticipating the former Stormers man being available for the start of the United Rugby Championship campaign on September 26 but may now be without him should he see any action for his country. Even more concerning would be if he impresses sufficiently to be called up to the Springboks squad for firstly the Rugby Championship, which extends into the first weekend of October, and then the Autumn Internationals, when Erasmus' men face France, Italy, Ireland and Wales in November. While Ulster would never prevent a player from representing their country, the intention was for Augustus to be a fulcrum at the centre of their forward pack in their bid to return to the URC Play-Offs next season, and being without one of their marquee players for a significant period – Ulster have six League games before the end of November – would be less than ideal for head coach Richie Murphy. The province are well-stocked in the back row, with James McNabney emerging last season alongside Ireland flanker Nick Timoney and David McCann, and Ireland lock Cormac Izuchukwu also able to step in at blindside flanker, but Augustus was set to provide a new dimension to the loose forward trio.
